0:00The Matrix Minute, a podcast where we discuss the first film one minute at a time because we just love this movie. Hey, guess what? Tim is back. Tim is back. I'm back. It's good to be back. What? What's this? Very good. Very, very good. Yeah. And not only is Tim back, but we have a wonderful guest, Seamus Hanley from Enlightenment Pictures. Welcome, sir. Hey. How's it going, guys? Thank you so much for coming. Yes. Thanks for having me. You're totally welcome. Here you are. And particularly because in these episodes, we're talking about Cypher. And one of your most prominent videos that you've done, I think, a year ago on YouTube

0:41was the video Why Cypher Did It. So we're probably going to prod your brain about this topic as we go through it. In other words, you're an expert on Cypher. Yes. Absolutely. Just 100%. I just seem to know how to profile cinematic scumbags. It's weird. I don't know if that's good down the line, but I ended up... I somehow empathized with them, and I don't know if that's a good thing. I think it's a good exploration. I'll put it. Yeah. Sure. Thank you. Thank you very much. Yeah. You're welcome. I think it was a very intriguing video, and it's something also that's like, you know, it's hard to find these kinds of things online. Sure. It's cool that you did that, because it's like something different.

1:22Who talks about Cypher, right? Yeah. Yeah. We discovered that, funnily enough, there's not a lot of stuff on Matrix. Yeah. Yeah. I did just a couple of those. I've been meaning to do more, considering how well the Cypher one did. And I did it as a warm-up, because I really wanted to make one about the movie Dread. Hey. Which is, that's one I have up as well. That one's much longer. And I was like, that's the really good video, but I'll warm up, and I'll talk a bit about the Matrix. Everyone knows this stuff. And then it turns out, yeah, there were observations I felt no one was talking about. And it seems, you know, like a lot of people leave comments going, huh, I never, no, I didn't spot this stuff. But the details are there. It's interesting. Most of that was like, what? That's interesting. Yeah. Yeah. And it just comes from, I'm not academic.

2:04I'm not studious at all. But I think, I feel like you guys are similar. I saw the Matrix when I was about 11, and then just re-watched it a lot as a kid. And so there's all, I just, I just know it very well. Like, I just, and those stuff stayed, that stuff stayed with me. There was just these little bits and pieces. Yeah. I think we're in the same page. I like the bit in the video when you, when you realized that, I think there was like an observation on them being in the kitchen, and you realized they're playing cards. And this is pretty much our journey. Because we've seen this movie like a zillion times, but watching it like minute over and over and over again, and just have that isolated thing, it's basically like a freeze frame. And you notice a lot of stuff that you kind of just, you know, whiz by watching the movie,

2:48you know, as a whole. Because it's pretty quick, actually. It's not a slow movie. Yeah. I think that's stuff in the video. It's the stuff where I'm going, okay, I'm just, I'm in the middle of editing this right now. I've already recorded the voiceover, and I just noticed more stuff. Like, yeah. The problems always come up when that happens. And it's crazy how many little things that you don't notice in The Matrix, because Tim said, like, it's a very fast-paced film. And especially as it gets towards the end, you know, the action sequences are really quick. And there's so many things that just fly over your head. It's so dense. There's so many things going on. Yes. Yeah. It's funny. I think it's probably because of the sequels. It's a little underrated, the film is now. We forget. We were talking. Go ahead. Sorry. It's really great. Yeah. Yeah. Because, like, it's weird. You know, we've mentioned it quite a few times on this podcast how, you know, The Matrix

3:31hasn't been really in the conversation, so to speak, in a while. And it's sort of resurfaced a little bit, like with some online videos and video essays and things like that. Especially because of the potential sequel or whatever's supposed to come out, the reboot or whatever. Or just the rumors. Yeah. But it's weird how, like, The Matrix isn't that much of a discussed film. Like, people don't talk about it that much. We'd have a lot more subscribers if it was. No, I think people are really starting. We were talking about this with another guest we had. I think our generations that this was our Star Wars. This was the big movie that you kind of, like, blew your mind and expanded your idea of movies that, you know, were coming of age. You know, we're all probably reaching, like, 30.

4:12And we are now the voice of the media that it kind of gets talked about. But I saw somebody post online this thing, like, oh, hey, give me examples of a movie that is held in low regard because of its sequels. And the first thing is The Matrix because it was so big. And then just sort of, like, it really fell off the deep end. It was just like... Yeah, it did. With the sequels, it was just like, oh, just let it, let's just let it, we'll just forget about it, you know? Yeah. It's like, oh, it had potential, but everyone kind of, you know, have a bad feeling in their mouth after watching the sequels. It phased out after those things really fast. Sure. I think, this might sound mad, but I think the disservice... The sequels aren't terrible. People compare them to the Star Wars prequels, and they're much better than those.

4:54Yeah. But on that same note, I think the disservice the sequels do is that maybe it would be easier, they wouldn't have had much of an effect on the first film if they were worse. I think maybe they're just a little too, like, you know what I mean? Oh, I see. Because they're not terrible. Yeah, yeah. You then, you legitimize them and go, okay, well, I guess these are canonical with the first film. But if it was like... Like people don't outlaw discredit them. Highlander 2. Yeah. Well, that's, or Robocop 2, where it's like, okay, well, I can, I can... But it's easier to distinguish it from the first one. But I think, because actually there is some good stuff in the sequels. Yeah, especially good ideas. You go, oh, I have to tie it in with the first one. Yeah. Yeah. Well, maybe... I like the architect scene. I love the architect scene.

5:34Maybe what you need to do is do, like, five more sequels, and then it becomes, like, the Alien franchise, where everyone's just like, oh, it's just the sequels. There's Alien, the movie, and then there's just the sequels. So this will be the Matrix. There's Matrix, and there's, like, seven different weird sequels. Oh, yeah. I know what you mean. Sure, yeah. That's how we say it. No, maybe, yeah. Okay, here's a question, though. Like, had the sequels not come out, do you think we would be in the same place today? Maybe a cult classic. Yeah, cult classic, definitely. Like, it would be elevated. Yeah, elevated. It would still seem, like, a masterpiece. Nobody would talk about it. Butterfly effect. Who knows what? You know what I mean? That's true. Who knows? Yeah, but this is just hypothetical. Yeah. I guess, I think, yeah, maybe we wouldn't have felt much need to champion it, because I do agree.

6:19It's easy to compare things to Star Wars. But this, I think, does have a lot of interesting comparisons in terms of impact and sort of unstable philosophy, but endearing philosophy. Yeah. Well, one thing that's come up on this podcast a few times is that we've sort of talked about, you know, the Matrix obviously is pivotal for all of us, generationally speaking. It's sort of like, you know, we were young when we first watched that. But a question is now looking, sort of revisiting it after, what, 20 years or so? Almost. Almost. Our question sort of has become sometimes, like, is the Matrix a product of its time? Because there are certain elements that we mentioned that really wouldn't work if it came out today.

7:04Sure, right. It was sort of like pre-internet boom. It was, you know, there was phones in it. You know, there was sort of like... Hacking. Hacking, which was sort of like, for some reason, a popular notion in the 90s, and it's less so today, at least in popular culture. Landlines as well. So, yeah, I don't know if you have any opinions on that. It's the first thing I always think of. I'm so used to watching it. It's easy to forget that it is, like, super, like, Generation X. It's... You know what I mean? That you forget. You know what I mean? When you look at it, that they're all like... I mean, they've managed to keep it a bit timeless in its own style. But, like, they have those sunglasses. And, you know, there's a scene where, you know, they go to a club and they're playing Rob Zombie.

7:47And, you know what I mean? And there's Rage Against the Machine at the end. Those things seem timeless now because they're in the film. But that is actually quite... That's very specific. It's very specific to that time. But then, yeah, I think... We can hear you, Tim, too. It's core message is timeless. But it's Nokia phones and... But also how X-Files, Agent Smith, and all them are. Oh, yeah. There was... The 90s seemed to be a time when conspiracy theories were very mainstream. Oh, yeah. That's a good point. Blair Witch came out at that time. X-Files was very popular. Oh, yeah. But then also the whole is my world a synthetic reality because you also have things like the Truman Show and the 13th Floor.

8:28Oh, and Existence. Existence. And Dark City, which they used sets. Dark City. They used sets from that to make The Matrix. They borrowed sets from that. So there was... The Matrix is sort of like... There were plenty before that. The Matrix seemed to really hit the... Strike the chord. But that was a thing at its time. But I also do think in terms of like effects and pace and storytelling, it's also not aged. It's still very entertaining and intense and engrossing to watch. I think it ascends from all the other ones being a saga in its own right. You know what I mean? It made a fictional universe that honestly is quite malleable and very...

9:09It's very dense. It's very dense. It's got a lot of stuff going on. Yeah. And there's still movies. All of Zack Snyder's movies are like completely eight in The Matrix. Oh, yeah. Exactly. We got all that undercranking, overcranking action going on. Yeah. Yeah. It looks like the... Yeah. And... Was there... No, that's it. No, you couldn't think of anything else. Awesome. Awesome. Well, without further ado, I think we can get into the minute itself. No, we can't, Philip. We're missing the pivotal question. What's the pivotal question, Jake? Have you asked every guest? I think Seamus more than... Introduced to it. ...gave us the answer to this. Okay, you're right. You did it with eloquence and it's a new spin to it. And I think you did a great job.

9:50Thank you so much for sharing this. Thank you. Thank you. Because you usually ask guests just that question. Yeah. And I feel like you did a really good job and I was very... I agree completely. ...interesting to listen to. Let's go into minute... 80? 7? Is it 88? Is it 87? 87. 87. Cipher, where's Tank? But all Cipher does is put his face uncomfortably close to Trinity's face in the real world and starts a monologue about how for a long time he thought he was in love with her. He used to dream about her. You're a beautiful woman, Trinity. He's tired of this war, this world, this ship, and eating the same goddamn goop every day. But most of all, Cipher is tired of most of what Tim is tired of when it comes to Morpheus.

10:34Needless to say, Cipher reveals to the crew that he killed Tank and Dozer. He jumps onto Morpheus and yells, surprise, asshole! And, you know, they may break him. And that's our minute. All right. So, we open with this shot. What a shot. Yeah. What a perftastic shot. Intimate. Yeah. Yeah. It's just a creepy lean-in as the camera goes really close into both of their faces. And I wanted to mention, like, the juxtaposition between that and then her on the cell phone. Yeah. And now, imagine showing this to someone who has no idea what the Matrix is.

11:15And how weird these cutaways would be. I remember being a kid and we had it on and someone didn't know what it was about and was like, what the fuck is going on? They just were really confusing. But I think they were just really quiet. Because, you know that time where, like, you start passing the Matrix around and suddenly only your real friends are the ones who have seen the Matrix and get it? I think they were just quiet. And they were like, okay, okay. Like, okay, what is this? This is insane. What is this? But yeah, I saw that. Just that sort of, so they're there and they're, okay. Like, yeah. But we were kids. So it's kind of mind-blowing. Yeah. Yeah. I think the first thought someone would have that has no idea, maybe, like, it's a dream.

11:55She's sleeping and he's somehow contacted her to the dream or something like that. Okay. Yeah. Which is more or less, yeah. Yeah. Or if you're more familiar with, like, you know, science fiction, it could be, like, surrogates and things like that, maybe. I don't know. Sure. Wasn't there a movie like that? The original clone. Yeah. It was called Surrogate. Source. There's Surrogates. Yeah. The one with Bruce Willis. And it's, um, it's the ideas and the effects are really good and that's about it. Oh, is it plural? Surrogates? Yeah. Yeah. Because it's, it's, it's, it's. I mixed it up. You guys haven't seen it, no? No. I haven't seen the trailer. I only saw the trailer, like, ages ago. Yeah. Yeah. And you got the crux of it. No, it's, it's actually terrible because it's just super. Yes. It's, it's a movie that suits like Bruce Willis's modern day performances.

12:39It's, as in the whole film itself is really low energy and not much going on. And disinterested. But the idea is brilliant. The idea that everyone, everyone stays at home, everyone walks around and their story gets to look younger and nicer and they don't feel pain and all this. And it's, uh, that's really good. And that's really interesting. Yeah. The film itself isn't very good. Yeah. I heard it was bad. Yeah. So. Yeah. Anyway, I just, I have to say, uh, kudos, uh, to how the cinematography is here. I love the composition, even though it is very, uh, unsettling, especially how close, uh, Joey pants is to, uh, Carrie Ann's face. Yeah. Um, but I have to say like the acting is great. I mean, the way he's talking and it's just like for a long time, you know, I thought I

13:20was in love. It's just, it, it works. Well, wouldn't you say that this is like, he really pulls off that. You know, element of Cypher finally getting his chance, you know, after nine years to like explain the whole thing to everyone. Right. And the thing is no one can escape his explanation. And that's the most diabolical part. And it's great that it's Trinity that he's explaining it to because she's the, you know, she's the one he's like most, I guess, and sort of relationship or whatever like that, you know, so, so, so it kind of works. It would be weird if it was someone else. Yeah, that's true. That would be weird. Apoc. Apoc. A long time. What's your name again? Cypher? What else? I like that.

14:01He's tired of this. The lighting is, the lighting is pretty awesome because you have the Trinity really light and then Morpheus is all in the darkness, you know, his dark bidding. Yeah, yeah. And then you have the banon, which is closer and closer, you know, it's very becoming very intimate. It's like, just like, you could hear the breathing. Yeah, you can. It's also really good. If you remember, like, the first time you watched it, do you remember that feeling of like, like, this was a long time coming? You really get a sense that he's been, like, how much he wants, he's been wanting to say this. You feel like, okay, now, okay, here we go. Now it's all coming out. You know what I mean? And like, and it's, it's very, I don't know, it's looming. It's very, there's a real sense of doom. And also, I think what's interesting is like, it's sort of sociopathic in a way because he's

14:43very calm as he does this entire speech. Oh, yeah. Where, you know, maybe someone else might be really nervous because it's like, you know, this whole plan, you know, it was almost like he, you know, he's made up his mind and he doesn't have any, you know, almost remorse. Yeah. He's just like, he just, this is it. This makes sense. Finally, you know, it's a breath of fresh air. And I'm correct. And now I can speak my mind. But sociopathic is spot on because also now they're all objects. They are, he, he's, they're all these dummies and it's, it's almost how he sees them or something like that. Yeah. It's just very scary. Yeah. If you think about it. Super creep factor. Definitely. And how vulnerable they are. Definitely. Because, and it's also, you know, I always looked at it. It's a very cowardly thing too, because, you know, he could only do this when he set

15:26it up like this. Otherwise, you know, he wouldn't face up to them. Yeah. He's been there for nine years. He never faced up to anyone really. Yeah. I mean, apart from like, you know, asides and things like that and sort of like remarks, but he never really likes, at least that we know of, he never really stood up. Yeah. You know, to like, especially Morpheus. Him standing up in the Morpheus, up to Morpheus in the Matrix and Morpheus just slapped him through four walls. It's like, shut up. They all just said, shut up. They all just deflect them. They always like, you know what I mean? They're constantly, that's, that's the thing I noticed when I was making the video is they keep, did I put it in the video? I can't remember. But there's a great bit where they first go in before the ambush and Cypher just gives Neo this smile. And Neo just kind of goes, uh, okay, you're weird.

16:06That's right. And walks away. And then Cypher has a look on his face, almost like, okay, fine. I will kill you then. Fine. Fuck you. Like, it's like, that he's just an, I never thought of it that way. But that's what made me want to do that video. There's so many moments like that. And then the, I don't think I go into it, but it's in the video where like, he's when Morpheus is introducing everyone and Morpheus puts his hand on his show. He's the only one who says something. The rest of them, he just, Morpheus says all their names and then Cypher just goes, hi. And Morpheus kind of licks his lips and kind of like a shut the fuck up kind of way. It's, I don't know. It's weird. It's crazy. It's little things like that. There seems to be a lot of little details in this whole thing that Joey Pants has probably

16:46worked out with the Wachowskis to, you know, develop. We've been saying Joey Pants for so long. What is his? Joe Pantoliano. Did you know, because I, the thing I get, I get a lot of comments, I constantly get comments on the Cypher video. And the one that keeps coming up, apparently it is confirmed that, that in, maybe you guys know this, the mythology, they, they thought Cypher was the one when they freed him. That's right. We talked, you guys, you guys have, you guys have established, you guys know this then. Yeah. We talked about it. Yeah. We talked about it before. Yeah. Yeah. Cause it's. Tim, shed some light on this. Cause I think you're the one who. I didn't hear a single thing that, that Shane said, but I presume cause I, yeah, it kicked

17:31him out for me, but I presume this is talking about Morpheus, the evil. The evil, uh, warlord. Yeah. Well, cause we have this sort of like in, in a podcast history, uh, Tim had this idea that Morpheus just keeps freeing everybody thinking they're the one. Yes. And he's going insane because he's just like, all he cares about is the one. And so he'll sacrifice all these previous ones just to get the real one. He's not a father figure. He's, he's more a charlatan. Well, that's Tim's theory. He's a ideologist. That's Tim's not on board with this. I agree with Cypher. He's a, he's a, he's a maniac. I mean, sure. In the end, it kind of works out because, uh, he pushes Neo, but I don't agree with his methods, nor do I agree with his dogma. It's kind of a one-sided, uh, maniac, but, uh, I don't know if you guys talked about this,

18:13uh, that, uh, we, uh, during the, uh, the podcast, we kind of revisited a 996 script and a 1998 shooting script. And what we discovered is that, uh, originally in the movie, uh, Morpheus kind of, this was a question that every guest had, you know, like pondering, but we found out that there were previous Neos. He had about five previous guys. He thought they were one. And in the end, they ended up dying. So, uh, what Cypher says in the beginning, you know, we're just going to end up killing him is, you know, if, if we consider that, that this was part of the movie at one point, it makes sense that. It does. If he saw five guys who died because Morpheus thought they're the one, he's like, you know

18:55what? I'm done with this after five times. Why, why would I try, why would I trust this guy to be Neo at all? So he is a bit of, um, he's a bit of a cult leader. Morpheus is. He does like the way Trinity talks about him. It's, it's, it's a bit, yeah, it's a bit Marshall Apple. His views are never really, um, like questioned basically. Yeah. And then we find out in the sequels that, uh, the basis for all this was deceptive because he got it all from the Oracle. Yeah. And it turns out she's, he never thought to check if she was human. Yeah. But largely. Yeah. Oh yeah. No good ideas. Yeah. But it's, um, but what was it? Uh, I know the Wachowskis are definitely on the side that Morpheus is irresponsible.

19:39I know they said to him when they shot the first one that like Morpheus is insane. He's, he's insane. And Morpheus didn't agree. It like was like, or Lawrence Fishman was like, what do you mean? And then when they made the sequels, he was like, oh, now I get it. Yeah. No, he's, he's, he's a maniac. So there you go. And the Wachowskis are on your side. Yeah. I mean, it's true. Like what happens in the sequels is just, oh yeah, yeah. Out of the water. But it shows the dogmatism. He takes on a track with a samurai sword. Like he's. I mean, watching this as a kid, he does become, you know, because he knows everything and he's full of answers. So you're projecting yourself onto Neo as, as, as, as, as a viewer and as being as a young child. Of course you, you're drawn towards his character because he has all the answers and he has the,

20:19you know, he's very motivational and he believes in you and everything. And watching as an adult, you're just like, who the hell is this guy? Well, he's sort of like, he's sort of like a big fish in a small pond in the matrix. Yeah. The first one. And then that, you can see how small his world is once all this is opened up in the sequels. Yeah. That line is, there's a, have you guys seen a dogma by Kevin Smith? Yep. And there's a great, just the line, the idea of the, the, a bunch of Neos before Neo and them all dying. There's a great line. Cause you know, there was a God can never speak direct in the movie dogma. A God can never speak directly to mortals or else their head and their heart explode. And Alan Rickman just says, oh yeah, we had to go through five Adams before we figured

21:01that one out. So yeah, it's a similar idea of like the, the, the first, yeah, the first Jesus didn't work out so well. He, uh, we can argue, argue that the, the, the, the one we, the Jesus we all think of didn't work out so well either. So, you know, but it's interesting. Some bugs. The matrix, it comes from the nice and interesting, um, I don't know, a love, hate relationship with religion, which is very interesting. Yeah. Well, I think there's a lot of religious elements. It's sort of like we talked about it's hodgepodge. It's sort of like a bit from here, all sorts of there. And then you kind of, this works, something doesn't work. Yeah. And that's what I'm talking about. It's like a showcase. Yeah. Um, so, um, for the longest time, Cypher thought he was in love with Trinity.

21:46Um, that's what he says. What can we say about this? Yeah. Yeah, I guess. Did he just, did he think he was in love and realized he's, he's, uh, it's, I don't know, Stockholm syndrome and he's just horny? That's a good point. That is true. I mean, like, what, what's the, what's the other option he has here? Switch? Switch. Right? That's the only other lady, right? Yeah. Is Switch, is Switch, and is Switching has something with. What's the other lady? Yeah, a little bit something going. I almost said Tupac. Is there something with. That's right. Tupac. Something with her and A-Poc. That would be amazing. Tupac. That would be amazing if Tupac was in here. I think he was supposed to be a cameo. I think in an alternate timeline, he probably was in it.

22:27That's the kind of thing he was almost doing was movies and stuff. I think. Well, if Will Smith was. Well, no, he's dead at that point. But if Tupac did not, and Will Smith was cast. Okay, so this is the alternative timeline. Tupac doesn't die. Hip-hop is more popular than it is. So, of course, they cast Will Smith what they want to do, because hip-hop now in 1999 is like even bigger than it was, right? He does a Matrix song over there in credits. Yeah. With the agents dancing in the background. And then Will Smith is like, you know what? A-Poc is cool, man. But Tupac is even cooler. So there you go. That's it. If we have the, you know, like infinite universes gun and we travel somewhere, we can watch a Matrix where Tupac is A-Poc.

23:08I'd watch it. But then is it then, as Cypher goes, now you have to watch Tupac die. That's the line. Which has this weird poignancy. Was that said in the moment in the real life death of Tupac? I don't mean to be insensitive towards a real person who actually died. But I now have this image of my head of someone in the drive-by going like, no, you have to watch Tupac die. And this is like years before the Matrix came out. Yeah. It's weird. Poetic. Yeah. And then if the time travel was the one who's from this universe and he actually saw Tupac die and then goes to that universe and he hears that, like, that's like the end of the world. Like, there's a time rift because, you know, the universes are now connected. It's now getting insane. We're getting insane, Tim. This is crazy. Down the deep end.

23:48Why don't we, how to make the Matrix worse. We'll make a new film. It'll be called Infinite Universe Time Travelers. Okay. To get back onto the minute. Yeah. There's a lot of, there's a lot of this going on. So after this whole little, this creepy scene, honestly, Cypher just jumps onto Morpheus there. Yeah. I love it. Now there's a wonderful little musical cue that happens here with the piano. And it's, it's, it's fantastic. Something you don't even hear in most of the film at all. The diddly diddly. Yeah. And it goes, surprise asshole. I wish, I wish I knew if them jumping onto Morpheus like that, was that in the script or

24:35was that like a Joey Pants thing? Maybe it was the Wachowski thing. Yeah. Yeah. It's, I, just jump on him. Do you have the, should you skip the hand, Phil? I just have this image of Joe Pantoliano. Like, I don't know. I don't know you guys. Like, just fucking jump on him. Jump on him. He's like, at least Lawrence Fishman's a big guy. Kick him in the balls, man. Yeah. He can't do shit. We're, you know, once we say action. But, um. It's an, it's an integral part of the movie. Yeah. It has to be in there. Dude. How does she know? She knows. Phil, but if you have the shooting script on hand. Yeah, sure. You can look it up. Can you check if, if the instruction is, uh.

25:16Jumps on Morpheus. Jumps on Morpheus. But this is such a weird. Surprise asshole. Aspect though. Because like, you know, you could have him be the typical, stereotypical villain, like walking around with his hands behind his back or something. Yeah. Oh, he's playing the plan. Yeah. Yeah. They're horrible. But it fits his character quite well. I mean, this is how he's behaved, you know, all the time. So. But it is weird. It works out well. Isn't it weird that he. It's funny that he's just as close and intimate with Morpheus as he was in Trinity. That is. No. Like he. Well, maybe that was his second choice, you know. Yeah. Yeah. Nope. Nope. For the longest time I thought I was in love with you. So in the script. In the shooting script. Yeah. All it says is, Cypher leans over, talking to Morpheus. There you go. Oh. I bet it was a Joey Pants thing.

25:56Okay. Open to interpretation. Yeah. That's. That's. Yeah. Welcome to how scripts change. Yeah. It's. I know. I was just thinking the idea that what if like Cypher was bisexual. I mean. Could be. He could. He doesn't seem like it. He could be confused. He has feelings for Morpheus as well. And. Oh, it's the tension. Well, that's what he means. He said for the longest time, I thought I was in love with you, Trinity. What he's saying is, I thought I was in love with you, Trinity. But I was actually in love with Morpheus. Yeah. And Morpheus. He tricked us. Yeah. And Morpheus is in love with Neo. We know that he is. That's clear. The way he looks at him. Yeah. And. And also. In all seriousness. Like the Wachowskis are great at like LGBT progress. So. They would.

26:36You know. I think you guys covered this. The whole idea that Switch was originally a trans character. Hence the name. Yes. So. And that's a subtle detail. So. Yeah. I mean. What started off as a joke. You could actually. Right. It could be. It's. It's. They're the two only bald members of that ship. So. They have something in common. Oh. They got something in common. Dozer might be bald. But he has a hat. So. Actually. I don't know. We don't know. Yeah. We don't know. Doesn't he have like dreadlocks sticking out? Or no. No. Am I crazy? I think you're. No. I may be confusing you with Link. Whatever his name is. Oh yeah. Link is in the second and third one.

27:17Link has dreadlocks. He has dreadlocks. Yeah. Oh. Oh yeah. Did we miss some dialogue here? We didn't talk about the dialogue at all. He's just tired of everything. He's tired of. He's just. He's explaining. He's goop. Goddamn goop every day. This is a classic line that we have used. So classic. Many many of the time. Yes. We did. Yeah. The bowl of snot. It's over there. Yeah. That's pretty much it. What else is there? Nothing. I just have to say that you were talking about this from this perspective of Cypher. But I. Watching this. Always was perspective of the people who are within the Matrix. And you just always. It feels very. It's quite actually horror. Like you know. You have no idea what he's doing there. We as an audience can see what he's doing. But imagine Trinity.

27:57He has no idea what's going on. She just hears his voice. So. So Trinity. So Cypher says he's tired of this war. What? I thought he said world. Oh yeah. Yeah. Let me hear this man. There's a couple of things where you're not sure what they're saying. Because in the end. Because his next sentence is I'm tired of fighting. Yeah. Okay. Well both work fine. Yeah. But. It's connected. Yeah. So if he says world and then fighting. I guess that makes sense too. But war and world. What does it say in the script? That is true. Wait. Well. Yeah. Okay. Sorry. If you don't mind checking. I just. Please. Well no. He's. He said he's tired of this war.

28:38Okay. Okay. Oh. That was true. War. Yeah. I guess that makes sense. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Yeah. Yeah. That was the next one. War against the machines. Yeah. It's funny that you forget that the. How mysterious how Zion was when you saw this movie on its own. Man. You almost missed it. You know as a kid. The scene where Tank talks about Zion. Like. And. It's so abstract. Yeah. Because Zion. And then he says. You wonder like. Yeah. Yeah. And then he says a war. And. Like. Yeah. There's these throwaway details of a bigger picture. So what did you think about that? I'm curious. Like. Do you like how they portrayed Zion in this sort of. Just. Mentioned way. Are you talking about the sequel? That's a thing. Because it's like. No. Because. How they show it in the second film.

29:18What? Jake. Jake. Like. How they show it in the second film. No. Because this. This is what I was. The entire of the. Of this podcast. I'm trying to remember. How it feels. What did I think of. How it. How it looked. Because now I can just see a bunch of naked people dancing. Okay. I can tell you. I felt like it was. Oh. You were Seamus. Okay. Sorry. Yeah. All right. Sorry. We've heard your. Right. Okay. I'm mixed. I wondered if we ever should have seen it. You kind of see too much. And I'm. As a writer and stuff. I'm very interested in the whole like. Background details in fantasy. That you don't actually have to see. You just have to know they exist. And that's. I'm totally with you. Like. That seems like something that's dying now. Because. Because of. Cinematic universes and all that.

30:00But I love you. It's like you don't need to actually see it. That's why Star Wars is so good. Because there's all these throwaway references to things. Like the Kessel Run. Things that don't make any sense. But they give you. The Clone War. Yeah. But they enrich the world. But stories don't make sense. I know. That's why they're good. Is because they. So. I mean. I like the robes. I like the steam machines. It wasn't bad. But. I sometimes wonder if we ever needed to see it. But. At the same time. You guys have the ongoing debate about. How did Cypher log in? Which is something. That's true. I get a lot of comments about that as well. How did he meet. We touched on it. Oh. How did he get himself in right? Yeah. I get half the comments I get are about that. There are. You should hear my theory.

30:41There are devices. In Zion. That allow you to log in yourself. So. That's. That's cool. That's. Maybe that's part of. They never said you couldn't do it. In the film. It's never. You know. So. What was his. Well again. What was your theory? Oh yeah. Switched help him. Yeah. Oh yeah. Switched help. I think I heard this in the steak episode. Yeah. Yeah. Because she's like. Not like this. So she. She knows. Yeah. She was supposed to be. This is. This is your. Fly your fools. Theory. Yeah. Of stupidity. Do you ever think Switch kind of looks like Keanu Reeves. But just like. Bleached. A little. Yes. Right. She kind of does. I always thought that as a kid. Some of her angles.

31:21That it was like. Her face. It's just that if you. Everything is white. Including the clothes. Everything that's dark is white. And it's just Keanu Reeves. What's the thing? Like when you're a kid. Especially in the shot. When her hair is like very. Sticky. Is she. Is she. That actress. Is she Australian? Because I know a lot of the. She's Australian. Belinda. McClory. And Mouse. Is Australian. And. One of the agents is in Farscape. Yeah. There's a couple of them that show up in other things. Yeah. Yeah. Did you. That's true. There's a lot of Australian people in that movie. Did you guys know. Because. You guys have researched this. But did you guys know that Mouse is the Death Sticks guy in Attack of the Clones? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. No. Okay. No.

32:01You guys. Okay. You guys have done your work. No. No. Fair enough. You've done your research. But that one was. That one. That one's amazing to me. When did you discover. Did you discover that when you watched the movie? Or. No. Just one. I spent a lot of time. Bryson around IMDb. I think I just randomly found out one day. That. That was it. Yeah. Yeah. It was a funny cameo. Oh. Mouse. You guys knew this from beginning. Because I watched whatever the Star Wars. That is one of the prequels. When that came out with you guys for the first time. And I remember you guys pointing out. Oh. Look Tim. Look who's that. Oh. Okay. Tim. I can't remember. I was like. And I was like. What? What was that? That's a little antennae. I've been that guy in the cinema plenty of times. Oh my God. It's that person. Yeah. So. Yeah. Fair enough.

32:41Yeah. My wife makes fun of me. And this is hilarious. Because every time a movie starts. And then the credits. Like on the beginning. You're like. Who's in it? And I'm like. Oh. He's in there as well. And then she just goes on. For any stupid random name. She goes. Oh. Oh. Look who's there. Making fun of just like. Random producer writer. Just like. Oh. Oh. Wow. He's in there as well. I was like. Yeah. I was. I was over at my parents last night. And they were channel surfing. And for a split second. I saw less than a second of something. And it kept moving. And I just went. Oh. It's Spy Kids 3. And then I was. Look. I've never seen Spy Kids 3. But why the fuck do I know it? Like. You know what I mean? Because I was just like. Well. They're in CGI suits. It's set in a virtual reality.

33:22I was like. Why do I know this? I don't. Yeah. I know. I know. But I just. Without even thinking. I just knew Spy Kids 3. Yeah. I'm that guy too. Yeah. Yeah. That's. I have that thing with video games. Oh sure. Like. I know what it is. I've never played them. But I know. Yeah. But it's interesting. Yeah. It's. I like doing that with Simpsons episodes. Like going. Okay. Which one is this? Like. You know what I mean? Oh man. But also. How quickly I can figure out if it's good. If it's in 16 by 9. It's terrible. Like if it's in widescreen. It's not a good episode. Yeah. And. Ah. But then just based on the. How the animation looks. You can go. This is. This is either a pretty good episode.

34:03Or a fantastic episode. Or you know. And yeah. So that's. I've got a lot of Simpsons in the. The pilot episode is the weirdest animation. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Where they're all just squiggly and weird. It's almost like the Rugrats or something. It is funny. You forget like even how all the. Like what is it? The first 44. Which are like the golden standard of Simpsons. I think it's one to five. I think it's. Is it after one? It's not the first two seasons. Isn't it? Oh no. No. Okay. I think there's like. There's like one episode. I think. I think somebody did like a video essay or something like it. Which is like when they jump the shark. When it becomes like. It's not like. Each one is like not like super perfect. You know. I think there's like a few seasons. When it's just like. Yeah.

34:43There's a couple of theories. But you forget how the animation is bad. It's. But then it got too good. Now it looks too clean. I don't watch it now obviously. But. There's a great. I haven't seen it in years. There's a great video by a guy called Super Eyepatch Wolf. About the full history of it. Oh yeah. I know him. Do you know. You know. Okay. I know him personally. Oh you do. That's awesome. Yeah. I went to college with him. So yeah. Dude. What? No. That's crazy. No. You need to understand that. It's not weird for you that I know him. It's weird for me that you know him. Because I know him for. Like yeah. Because he's just in the past. Well. Has just done very well with his YouTube channel. I know of him. That's what I. Oh no. Fair. No. No. But that's weird for me. You know what I mean. Because. Because I'm like. This is a guy I know from college. And he's done very well now. With his. With his YouTube channel.

35:23So. It's crazy that I'm talking to you guys. It's like. Oh you guys have heard him. Because I went to an anime convention with him recently. And filmed his like Q&A. And it's just all these fans. And I'm like. He's just. He's just. He's become a rock star. But that video is really good. That one. That's the one he did. That one. That's the one that's the most popular. He did one about the full history of The Simpsons. So. In terms of. The curve. When the best times were. It's. He describes it very well. But I know. It's when Martin Sheen shows up. That's when it starts. Getting bad. The. Oh. The real Seymour Skinner. Oh yes. Yes. Yes. That was. Oh yes. That's the one. That's the one. I mean that episode has some moments. It's moments. But you know. I always. I always think it's when Tony Hawk shows up. That's when it's all over. That's when it's.

36:03Tony Hawk. Blink 1802. They don't even make any jokes. Blink one. That's the episode. I haven't seen that episode. I had a clip of it. For such a long time. There's a white stripes one too? I don't think I. I think I just watched the music video. I gave up by then. I think I was out. I think maybe that's like post Tony Hawk all the way. Yeah. But Tony Hawk is episode 300 on the dot. So that's the crazy thing. Wow. Yeah. Easy to remember. Wow. Look at us going full circle. Everything's connected. Yeah. We talked about The Simpsons on this show a long time ago. Sorry. It's perfect. No, it's great. It's awesome because it's like, this is fantastic. It's fine. I think when Simpsons started with the whole thing, like, oh, let's have a, who's going to be the celebrity guest on this episode.

36:46And it was just like, yeah. The trope. Yeah. Yeah. That was like the big thing. I mean, when I was a kid, it was exciting. It was like, oh, let's play 182. Okay. Was any of the Matrix cast in a Simpsons episode? I have no idea. It feels like they would have parodied like at least the jackets and stuff. There definitely have been, like, I think there's a couch, a Matrix couch, but like, again, at the same time, I would have stopped watching. Couch gag. Couch gag. Yeah. But I would have stopped watching by then or a Halloween special, but I would have given up by then. I really, because I was, it was my religion. The Simpsons was when I was a kid. And then I just gave up when I was a teenager because I was like, it's just bad now. I just forgot about it. You know, I don't know anyone who watches this.

37:27Yeah. I'm actually lucky enough to have not seen it when I was a kid. And I actually started watching it by renting the DVDs in my local library in the States when we used to live there. And I just went from season one all the way to season nine, I think. And that's where I stopped. So I got, I would just watch the good episodes. Oh yeah. So yeah. Check those out. Check it out. So it's the best show. In my opinion, the best show of all time. It's really smart. I love it. Yeah. Because every episode I've seen has been good from those seasons. From the old ones. Yeah. Yeah. Season 12. Until 12. From November. Season 12. November 12, 2000. It has the Matrix couch gag. They enter in bullet-time.

38:08Of course. Yeah. Typical. What else? bullet-time. Okay. Okay. Anyway, if you want to just go back to the minute, if there's anything else you want to say. Sure. Sure. I don't know. I don't know either. I'm just thinking. I'm just excited about the next minute. It's because I know. There's more things. There's more things. Not just Cypher sitting on people. Pretty much. Cypher sitting on people. In this episode, Cypher sits on people and they don't know. Do you think he was doing that? Maybe he was like he slipped. He slipped tank a couple of bucks. Whenever they were out on missions and he was just to sit on them. Oh. Oh, man.

38:50I feel worse. Like Noah's tank. I feel worse thinking about this. And tank. Yeah. Being in on that. He's in collusion. He's such a sweetheart tank. Also, apparently they have money for him to give them. I was going to ask you. What is this currency they're exchanging? Yeah. Well, it's the currency is Dozer's drink. Oh, yeah. On another computer. Everything. That's the economy of it. It's Dozer's drink. Yeah. And the stupid amino acid food. Aminos, vitamins, and minerals. By the way, Tim, you missed out on Dozer dying. He's dead. That's true. He's gone. Oh, he's dead. Dozer? Dead. Yeah. Sad. Sad. Very sad. Roasted. It's pretty grim, isn't it? The shot of his body. It is, yeah. Absolutely. It's really, it's like, I remember, yeah.

39:30It's pretty cool they don't have guns in the real world. Well, yeah, you're right. You mean like regular ones? Dead contrast. Yeah, just like, you know. It's good. And we were talking, sorry, go on. Is that thing that he uses, the film doesn't say, but is it a repurposed, it's not primarily a weapon, it's like repurposed or? Yeah, that's what we were talking about in the minute prior. We were actually talking about what it actually was used for, and I think it's just, it's not really meant to harm humans or kill them, so that's why they get so brutally, like, mangled. And that's also why it's inconsistent with how it takes out Tank and Dozer, because Dozer gets hit full on, and he gets his whole arm, like, charred, and apparently he does die.

40:15But Tank, on the other hand, he gets shot twice, and he didn't die. So, there you go. Our speculation was that it was an EMP gun. Yeah, it's just for the Sentinels. But then I also wonder, I wonder why they never used it on the squids, squities, like, they never. They're just standing around staring at them at the end, so. I can't wait to get to that part. I hate to bring in the sequels, but I was also mentioning that, you know, it's like, oh, they don't have guns, but don't they have, like, big mechs with guns and everything firing? Yeah, dude, in the sequels, they use that stupid gun everywhere. Like bazookas. Yeah, they also use the EMP gun. Oh, really? But that's one of those things that, oh, we did that in the previous movies.

40:56But it kind of begs the question, why? It's like the training circles, the training balls in Star Wars that the kids use. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Sorry. But it makes you wonder, why didn't they have any, what kind of ship are they? Are they just, like, recon? Like, why don't they have any guns? They're an explorer ship. I guess they're an explorer ship. Oh, they're going far in the sewers. Yeah. The final frontier. The sewers. I would totally believe that, like, Morpheus is going against the actual, like, point of the Nebuchadnezzar. Yes. If they were, like, an exploratory ship and he's going on this crusade without permission, I totally would believe that. Me too, me too. I don't think he's a lot of backup back in Zion.

41:38No. Yeah, no, no, no. No. Doesn't have the Senate. The Senate is in the sequels. The Senate approves. There is, yeah, they're very, I like the robes. I mean, the Senate, yeah, was fine. But, um, I don't know. It's funny. It's, yeah, it's that whole thing I was saying earlier, how, like, there's nothing terrible. It's just, it's kind of, I guess that works kind of way, as opposed to, like, stuff in the prequels in Star Wars, where it's like, this is definitely terrible. Yeah. It's true. It is true. Well, I. What else? Well. If you want to keep this episode going, be my guest. Great. Let's talk about more things. Okay. I'm drinking a beer. Wow. Good. Good one, Phil. It's a pretty good beer. It's a, uh, a hoppy lager.

42:19It's great. That sounds nice. Do you think that Dozer would use a hoppy lager? Dozer doesn't know what a hoppy lager is. He doesn't. That's sad. He doesn't know anything. It's why him and Tank have no problem with eating the goop. They're the only ones. They're loving it. They're like, this is the best. Oh, yeah, you mentioned that in your video. Yeah. Food. Yeah, there's like, who gives a shit? Like, yeah. So it's, yeah. Yeah. But I don't know. I don't know. The juicy steak. So here's a question I always wondered. Do you think they could experience the Matrix? No. No? No. They don't have the holes, buddy. That's true. The holes are probably difficult to implement. I think they just need the brain hole. I like the idea. I like the idea that maybe they tried in Zion. Oh, no. They fucked it up.

42:59Probably. I think so. You know, maybe they needed more soldiers. So they're just like drilling holes in people's brains. They're trying. They're trying. They're killing people left and right. Now this reminds me of Existence. Let's not go there. Oh, no. But you know what? You know what? I think they do maybe have a system. Spores. Because, oh, spores. Remember when in the sequels, when they enter, there's like a bunch of people like navigating the operating system for the ships coming in and they're hooked up to the Matrix? Yeah. They're hooked up to the construct. It looks like. The construct. Sorry. The construct. But the thing is like, would they unplug people and then hire them? And, you know, I would think maybe they're just giant people who. Yeah. Or maybe I guess they're like, oh, we're looking for workers in construct.

43:43Requirements must have hole in head. Yeah. Must have hole. They're free. They're free. And you come on an interview and you just like draw a little black bit on the back of your head. It's like, yeah, I've got a hole. Let me have a look at that. That's not a real hole. And they die. You'll never be. You'll never be one of us. You'll never have. Hey, you lied on your resume. Yeah. Yeah. So Seamus, we also talked about some kind of class issue that might have been going on in Zion that could be a possibility. Whereas people who have plugs and people who don't have plugs. Oh, yeah. What do you feel like this? Oh, wow. Yeah. Like kind of. Is it like they're like. Like prejudice and things like this. I. Yeah. Well, what I'm just thinking is at first I was like the guys who have been in the matrix with plugs. They could be like Vietnam vets who are like, you don't know what it's like to live.

44:27But living in the matrix would be seen as a form of luxury. So there's a flip side to that of like. But there also be pride from the Zion natives. Yeah. No holes. Pure, you know, like you guys are like. Yeah. But also. But also you guys lived in the matrix. The nature. You know, I mean, you grew up eating junk food. I trust them. Yeah. Like the only reason. And but almost. But it's this weird, like Thatcher thing of like, you can't choose to have been born in the matrix. Like, you know, it's not like they chose to or they had. It's not their fault. Yeah. That's. That's got my. I wonder. That's got my mind racing a little bit. Don't ever stop prejudice. Yeah. If it's a real problem or not in Zion. Yeah. Or it's just, you know, wonderful. You know, everyone hold hands. La la. Beautiful.

45:08Zion. Yeah. I think there's probably lots of prejudice people that go around. What's up, holy? Get your holes out of my. Put your hole, Bane. Put your hole before I put you in one. All right, guys. It's like everyone has holes. We all have holes. That's true. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. We can't escape. We all got butts. What do you want to say, Phil? Yep. Opening. Everybody poops. Okay. So I just realized that we can have a little segment for the 1996. Really? Yes, we can. Yeah. Let's do it. What an episode this is. This is an amazing episode. Play the jingle. What a wonderful jingle. Johnny, he just.

45:48Probably forget about it. He's just brilliant. We won't forget about the jingle. No, we won't. We won't forget about the jingle. It's a good jingle. Okay. So in 1996, the script was written and the script is a little different. And here's some extra lines that Cypher talks to with Trinity. So he actually goes. Sorry, I'm reading. I read it right away, but I have to just read a little bit more. It's okay. We'll just silently judge you. Yeah. Yep. So Cypher goes. In a way, you're very lucky. Most people never know why they die. One minute they're alive. The next they're dead. No warning.

46:29Nothing. That's why I thought maybe I should tell you. Seemed the least I could do. You see, the truth, the real truth, is that the war is over. It's been over for a long time. And guess what? We lost. Did you hear that? We lost the war. And then Trinity goes. What about Zion? And then Cypher goes. Zion. Zion. Zion is part of this delusion. More of this madness. That's why this has to be done. It has to end now and forever. Okay. My delivery isn't as good as it would. But yeah. And Trinity goes. My God. This is about Zion. You gave Morpheus for the access codes to Zion.

47:10There you go. Wow. Some extra lines there. Do you get the sense that not everyone on the ship has seen Zion? That would be cool. Because I got that. When I was a kid, I thought maybe that was the case. Because Tank says, you live long enough, you might even see it. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, really? That's how you took it. I just thought he meant it's so dangerous. These missions, they go on. Yeah. Yeah. No, sure. Yeah. Because the ones always get killed off so fast. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. That's what he was referring to. What's it? The 72 hours? Do you know that? In the video game? No. There's, you know, the homeless, again, I'm getting into the sequels. I apologize. It's fine. It's fine. You know, the homeless guy or the hobo looking dude.

47:50And he runs the train station. Oh, the train man. Yeah. Yeah. The guy from Mad Max. Yeah. Bruce Bents. Yeah. He shows up in the video game in Enter the Matrix. Because there's a lot of great stuff in that game. The cut scenes and stuff. Yeah, there's some interesting cut scenes. Yeah. And it's all canonical. And it ties in with the reload and stuff. But there's a bit where he walks past. He's talking to, I forget the name of the main guy. Niobe. There's Niobe. And then, or I think it could be either one of them. It depends on who you're playing as. But he walks by and he just goes, 72 hours. And they're just like, what did you just say? And he goes, 72 hours. That's exactly how long the last Zion lasted. And he just walks off.

48:30And it's that whole hint. That looming thing of that. So it's not just ones, but Zions that don't last very long. Well, it's the whole cyclical revolutions. But it's just a constant. 72 hours. What if they just didn't know what to eat? They were free. Then they just freezed outside of the Matrix. Guys, how do we do this? But it's interesting that Cypher is onto something, though, with this. How did he? I guess he's thinking more like just that he's not buying into the whole goals and causes and stuff like that, I suppose. Did you guys see The Last Jedi? Yeah. Yep. No one ever heard of it. What is it? Just Disney trying something new.

49:12Is it Return of the Jedi? Return of the Last Jedi. Yeah, right. Well, spoilers, because it's still relatively fresh. Spoilers, everybody. Spoilers, everyone. If you don't want to hear it, turn it off. But just the whole thing with Benicio Del Toro's character. That's all. Just that he's the same kind of guy. But he seems less like an evil person. You believe his point more, but Cypher has the same point, almost. Almost. Yeah. He's almost like Han Solo in the original, where he's just like, I'll just take my money and fuck off. Yeah, that's true. He's sort of indifferent. But I think, I don't know if Cypher's so indifferent, though. I think Cypher, I don't know.

49:53Yeah. I don't know what to say. Well, he was, at the end of this minute, he's just about to get into talking about how he wants to see Morpheus suffer. So I guess there's something sadistic about that. There's a chip in his shoulder. So he's not so much like, you know, hit and run. He's more like, he wants to get back at people. Yeah. I think he would have much more saddened, you know, like, I'm sorry, I have to kill you guys, but I have to do this. You know, this is more like, he's really having pleasure from this. He's done. He has a speech that he's been working on, clearly. Yeah. Dude. Just nine years. Like, it has a previous draft. We read some of the, he had an earlier, that's his 1996 draft. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's been working on it. He's like, this isn't good. Cut it down. Yeah. Scribbling. And then she'll say this to me and I'll say this.

50:33Maybe it's just because Trinity didn't give the right cues. That's why. Oh, yeah. Tim, I think he looked up to Morpheus writing his notes. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. They all, what do you think they do? Just sit around, write their notes. Play cards. Write their notes and play cards. Yeah. That's true. That is true. Yeah. They have like, yeah. Okay, so I'm going to have to say that I think with this said, I think our episode can conclude itself. Well, you know where to find us. I always mess up all the URLs as I usually do. So, Jacob, you do it. Take it away. You can find us on our website. Okay, fair enough. On the website. But more importantly, you can find Seamus on his different projects that he's up to.

51:17Seamus, take it away. Hey. You can find me on, my place to go to is Twitter, twitter.com slash Seamus Hanley, all one word.
