0:00The Matrix Minute. Have a merry, merry Matrix Minute. Minute Christmas. Happy Christmas. Happy Holidays and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and all the other December holidays. Because I have to mention that it is December and we are talking to you today. Do you know what that means? Hi, I'm Jake. That's Phil. This is Tim. Yes, this is Tim. Again, we are guestless, but I hope that once this whole December lineup goes away, we'll be able to go back in style, in strength, and finish off the entire show with a lot of extra people. So it's not just us. So we have to apologize for this lull in the holidays. We have to apologize for what we were talking about earlier. Why do we have to apologize? I don't know. Philip has to apologize. I have to apologize for everything.

0:42Yeah, he's an apologist. Mm, cookies. Apologetic. That's very good. Listen, you know what I was going to say? I have friends from Canada and they say I say sorry too much. Don't talk with your mouth full. Listen, I'm sorry. I want to say... There it is again. There it is. There it is. We can use the Christmas jingle for the 96 Matrix cast. Oh, yes. If we get there today. Hopefully, hopefully we get some... I forgot about that. The Christmas jingle. While we still have... Yeah, we will. I mean, it'll be on Friday. Oh, really? The Christmas spirit's all around. See? You can hear it. Which is great. Jolly old time. Jolly old time. What did we... You know what we never talked about?

1:22We never... What? Not talked about. We never... Addressed? Had this as a sort of feature in our podcast. We never really did like any kind of reminiscing of what we talked about last week. Well, usually we keep repeating ourselves, so... No, I know, but not to repeat ourselves, but just to get a little context, just like a brief thing. Like, last week, we talked about... Do you remember what we talked about? The Oracle? Right? We were at the Oracle. Yes. You guys talked about going to Mars. Nia walked... Yeah. Living in Mars. Really? Yeah. And... Did you remember this? I think... I think I was like asking who... Like, I can't remember. Oh, like who would go colonize? And you were like, how'd you go? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

2:02Oh, yeah. If you leave your family... I don't know how we got there, but... How do we get there? Who knows? The audience probably knows. Well, I'm still eating a cookie. No, no, that's today. Well, that's because we're still with the Oracle, so... We're still with the Oracle. We talked about some of the beginning conversations that she has with him, and we stopped where she goes to lick his palms. Yes. Right? His palms are sweaty. Mom's spaghetti. Knee's weak. Mom's spaghetti. Exactly. Mom's spaghetti. Everybody. And he... She looked at his palms. Everybody's choking now. And that's where it cut, right? We didn't get her dialogue yet. Yeah. I think this is the minute where... I think this will be the minute where Tim will finally be able to talk about what he

2:44wanted to talk about for such a long time. Yes. This is the one. This is the one. Well, welcome to Minute 75. Yeah. I brought cookies to eat while we do this podcast. Absolutely. I ate them all before we started recording. Me too. So I'm sad now. It's okay. I saved mine. I was just waiting until the opportune moment. Good. And I still have my cookies. You're patient. You know that experiment? The psychological experiment? Oh, the cookies. If you get one cookie and wait and get two. Let's explain it. So the psychological experiment was... The future of businessmen. They would take... They would put a cookie on the table or a treat and they would say, bring in subject number one. Child. Child. I don't know how old they were. Like five, six. Small.

3:24Two months. And you leave in terrible. Really? I actually don't know. That's a good question. Yeah. Yes. You do leave. I think they were like five years old or something like that. Yeah. Something like that. And they go and they see and they say, you can eat this cookie now, but you won't eat than one cookie. But if you wait a certain amount of time, you will get two cookies. Yeah. And evidently, I'm not actually just around the science of this, but they kind of found out that longitudinally, as they studied these kids into the future, they found, I think, some kind of correlation with the kids who waited for the two cookies being a little more, I guess, successful or patient. Yeah. The future of businessmen. And it's funny, it's tied in with that those people who eat the cookie are sort of evolutionary.

4:10They're more adept to the way humans lived before because you kind of have to grab what it is you can. But it's in the futuristic world we live in. They didn't adapt the means. This futuristic world we live in. So some people are like that. Maybe you were the child who waited since you waited for your cookies. Absolutely. We're just cavemen. We're Neanderthals. We are cavemen who eat the cookie. We have the cookie we eat now. I'm more of the sophisticated man. Yes, the homo sapiens. The one that thinks. We are the chromagnons. You are the chromagnons. The businessman. The, what is it? I would love to know what kid I was. The two cookie kid or the one cookie kid? I ate the whole plate. The thing is that I would wait until they leave the room and then I would eat it.

4:51I would be the child. I would be the poor child. Do you know what's funny? I think I wouldn't eat the cookie because. I have some weird thing where it's like I have trouble with like authorities. I'm always afraid of like, like messing something up or something. You would be sitting there thinking, should I eat the cookie? Yeah. What did he tell me? I'm just going to wait. I'm just going to wait. Yes. And ask again when they come into the room and they'd be like, oh look, Jake. You'll be a future businessman. You're like dying inside. Precisely. Yeah. Amazing. So minute 75. That's right. That's the minute we're on. We're still with the Oracle and this is what happens. I'm not the one. Neo says. The Oracle apologizes and tells him that he has the gift, but is waiting for something.

5:34For what? His next life maybe. Who knows? Neo chuckles and says Morpheus nearly had him convinced. Poor Morpheus. Without him, we're lost. The Oracle responds and tells him that Morpheus believes in him. And that's how our minute ends. I have something special to announce today. I did a little bit of research. Oh, wow. Can you believe it? Wow. To make up for it. Because I remember in the summer, I was trying to do some research and I was doing some Twitter, social networking stuff on the Matrix and things like that. Uh-huh. And I was thinking, you know what I should do? I have some free time. I should read a little bit about some of the themes in the Matrix.

6:15Okay. And I read a couple of chapters from this book that I mentioned before called The Matrix and Philosophy. A Complete History of the Snickers bar. Which I think is part of the same series, like, you know, like how they have like the X-Men and philosophy and all these different books. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, so I read a couple of chapters from that book and there were some mentions of the Oracle and I realized I never took the time before we recorded the Oracle episodes to mention some of the things I learned from that. Okay. So I only have two things that I learned, which might be interesting to share because we didn't mention it last time. Yeah, yeah. Go ahead. Absolutely. So remember we were talking about Neo breaking the vase and we were like, Yes.

6:55You know, exploring some of those ideas. And then we talked about going to Mars. Is that where it came from? Give these people air! And I just found it interesting that in one of the chapters of the book, the author, his answer was this. She asked the question, what's really going to bake your noodle is, we'll finish it. How does it go? Would you still have, would you still have broken it if I hadn't said anything? Yeah. And the author here says, no, because her mentioning. No. The breaking of the vase is what brought it about. Sorry, I had to move my head to read the screen. So the author is like, declarative, he said no, that wouldn't bake his noodle because she

7:39said it, which then created the reaction of him. No one's baking any noodles. I know. Breaking the vase. Is he saying no, it wouldn't bake his noodle or no, it wouldn't break the vase? It wouldn't bake his noodle. Like, I mean, it would. Because you're confusing me there, buddy. Merry Christmas. What am I trying to say, guys? Help me out. Well, he wouldn't have broken a vase because he wouldn't have turned around. Yes. Thank you so much. Okay. Okay. Because you went with the baking of the noodles. And then we were like, who's baking noodles? That was a metaphor. I'm thinking of Neo's noodles at F8th Street. So that was interesting. Why is he so declarative, though? He's so sure of it. That's a good question. I don't know. We should ask him.

8:19I just thought it was an interesting perspective because I don't think any of us mentioned that. Well, because we were talking about how she can predict things algorithmically and things like that. And then we're talking about some spiritual things. But maybe the actual answer is that the Oracle hasn't a clue. And she just said that. And then she made a little parlor trick out of it. Trickster. So that's kind of interesting, I thought. That's cool. That's a thing. That's a thing. Kind of mooster. Well, cool, man. Cool, cool, dude. Cool. What's the other thing? Are you saving that for now? No, we can do it now because it doesn't really relate to the episodes today. And then the second thing is, remember we were talking about the potentials and the spoon boy. Oh, yeah, yeah. Those kids, yeah.

9:00We were talking about some Buddhist elements, reincarnation. Did we mention that before? Yes. So that's obviously a theme in the movie. And there's another article in the chapter in the book where they're talking about maybe I should save it for the next episode because there's a line. Oh, no. She says in this episode, yes. She says, sorry, kid, you got the gift. That's right. Yeah. I'm not the one. And then she says... Looks like you're waiting for something. Yes. And she goes, your next life, maybe. And that phrase... She says it's so nonchalant. That phrase is very key to this idea of reincarnation. And this author in this chapter has...

9:40He proposes that there are three phases of the one in terms of reincarnation. So the first phase is the one that Morpheus talks about. It was he who freed the first of us. So that's the first life of the one. So it's a different guy. It wasn't Neo. Yeah, different guy. And then he supposes the second reincarnation is Neo, which is Hacker Neo learning about this prophecy of the fate. Hacker Neo extraordinaire. Which may happen. Yeah. And the third resurrection is Neo when he gets resurrected at the end, right? So he dies, but he comes back as the one, right?

10:25So that's interesting. Oh. It's an interesting thing, but it kind of clashes with the whole point of reincarnation, especially the third one, because that's not how it works. You have to kind of embody a different body. I mean, I don't know. It's a bit more... Yeah. It's probably like a... Like, Christianic, you know? Like, a little bit more like, you know, you die and you're reborn. It's more like Jesus-like. Yeah. He was actually mentioning that in the chapter. He was saying like... It's like a mix. It's a mix, yeah. Because like, at the end, Neo is reincarnated. And then he talks about how sort of like the purpose of that is to break free from these rules in the Matrix. Remember, he says, I'm going to show you a world without rules at the end of the film. Yeah.

11:05Yeah. And so the idea is that... And we talked about this interesting thing when we were mentioning the dojo battle. Remember? Bending the rules. Yeah. Breaking the rules. And the author was talking about that. He was saying that maybe the whole like reason for the one at the end is to show people that sort of like we only limit ourselves by what we think. So if we think and sort of break free from... Yeah, that's what I'm... We were talking about earlier. Then we can bend the rules. And that's what Neo is like proposing at the end saying, look, you know, I resurrected. I'm enlightened. I'm breaking all these rules. I'm going to teach other people to break the rules. within the Matrix. That's where you can get that ending that you talked about for making the Matrix worse.

11:47Which one? The one where they're all in the dojo being taught by Neo. Yes. Neo with a black shirt. The army. The new Avengers of Neo. So yeah, Tim, I guess it's a bit of a blendy. Some blendy stuff going on here. Because as far as I know, like a reincarnation, the sort of, I don't know, what is it? Like a religion or philosophy or faith. But it's your sort of knowledge, but like it's spiritual knowledge. It's a cumulative. So if you know, like, I don't know, whichever part of it, like you're with meditation and everything. And if you believe in this, like you can unlock, like, let's say someone who is like, like Dalai Lama. Dalai Lama. I still have that. And, uh, he's like, he's, he's very, he's very, uh, proficient and he's, you know, his

12:35mind is completely, uh, expanded and everything because in his past life, he, you know, he utilized those past lives to study it. And every time he starts new as a person, he sort of like, you know, the first, first 20 years of his life, you know, he needs to get connected to his previous one. Yes, exactly. I think it's part of the Neo too. That's sort of the idea. And then he uses rest of his life to gain more knowledge. So like, let's say, you know, like as someone is human, we cannot reach these sort of crazy stages of, you know, of Nirvana by ourselves in one limited lifetime. You have to kind of use all your, you got it. Yeah. Yeah. But that's, that's, that's, I guess the philosophy of that. So, so this ties in with like, there were previous NEOs because you have to have the,

13:16the, the accumulated knowledge of those to open your mind. Just Thomas Anderson by himself can't achieve this unless he connects, like you said, reconnects with his previous incarnations. I think it's a cool idea. Especially within the matrix. Yeah. So let's bring us to what, thank you, Jacob, for the, for the, well, I wanted to make up a little bit. For someone to bring some research. Well, good. Someone's doing something. Other than, yeah. But. That was lovely. I just wanted to say that, what do you want to say, Tim? You're like, but. If you listen to the background music, the radio, the music changes to a song called I'm Beginning to See the Light by Duke Ellington. Cool. Cool.

13:56It also ties into that. Enlightened. Yeah. So in the background, you can hear. I love that stuff on the one that matches. Okay. So that is, now it is the minute. I've heard, I've heard, and this is what we started to discuss and we all shushed ourselves. Yeah. We've been waiting for you to say this for such a long time. Now I want to hear. Now I'm scared that maybe it was just a misunderstanding. We're interpreting this all the same. But the line is, he asks, am I the one? And she says, sorry, but you got the gift. Which to me is understanding that she's saying the opposite. She's saying, yes, you are the one. You've got the gift of being the one. She is confirming he is the one.

14:36I'm sorry. That's not what you want to hear. But I am telling you, you are the one. What do you guys think? I have to agree. I was always confused with the line forever because I didn't know what she was trying to say. And I didn't know what she meant by that because her tone of voice is so nonchalant. Sorry, honey. So I never understood it. But I would say my interpretation exactly like yours would be that she's saying like, unfortunately, you are the one. Okay, good. Good. Okay. So there's no, there's no, because we brought this up. We're all on the same page. Okay. So this author was talking about the reincarnations in the book. He also mentioned this and he said that, no, this is weird. Listen to this though. Okay. No, no, no. He said that she gives him the unhappy news that he's not the one.

15:22How? What would that make any sense? I don't know. I'm sorry you got the gift. How would that be? You're not the one. He probably misinterpreted. Yeah. Because doesn't it make more sense? But no, it doesn't make sense because then why does Neo later say, he almost got me convinced? So she has to be negating. But why would she use that language? Why would she say, you've got the gift. You've got the gift. It looks like you're waiting for something. Yeah. She's confirming, saying like, hey, you're the one. No, you are the one, but you are not convinced yet. Oh, okay. Yeah, that makes sense. Well, you're waiting for something. Maybe your next life, which is exactly what you were talking about before. He dies and then resurrects and that's his next life and he's convinced he's the one. So it's a little bit weird though. Then why would Neo reply with Morpheus almost had me convinced?

16:05Because he's dumb. Why would Neo just go like, oh, okay. So, oh, I'm waiting for something. Yeah. And just ruminate on that instead of going. You already made the choice. I guess, I guess he's, it's a bit cryptic. What I could say is that even the Oracle telling him he's the one, he's still not convinced. And I guess he's not, he's not saying, oh, you almost convinced me, but he's saying it, oh, Morpheus also, you know, almost convinced me as in this whole plan of him building up to it. And then the Oracle telling him. Maybe it's just written in a way that's not so clear, but that's how I interpret it. He's like, there it is.

16:46The Oracle, the one, you know, that Morpheus has been talking about tells him he's the one. But it is strange. I understand. Like, you've got the gift. This is very, I don't know why they made it so. It's weird, right? Like, it's very. Very odd. Very. It's ambiguous. It's very ambiguous. Like, she doesn't say you're the one. The gift, like, that's very open to interpretation. We could have said maybe, like, Neo's a gifted speed noodle eater. You know, at his local. Sorry, kiddo. Yeah, sorry, kiddo, but you are the one. Yeah, weird, right? Yeah. Maybe because, like, I guess Neo was expecting her to tell him, like, no, not.

17:31Your next life, maybe. Who knows? That's the way these things go. That's really well written, though, I have to say. Even though it's ambiguous, it's so well written. It's well written, but now I'm starting to doubt it. Is it well written? Is there a concise? The first part I don't like. The sorry you got the gift. I feel like that's a bit. Maybe that's what, maybe that, dude, maybe this is a glimpse into why the architect conversation didn't work. He's just like, yeah, you're easy. Like, just that line. Just don't seem to be able to. That line is ambiguous, but look, we're, like, struggling and we're reading different people saying different things. Yeah. And it's just one line. I'm really curious, and the listeners, if you can, you know, write in after this episode, if you have your own interpretation, because there's two really negating sort of moods

18:17of conversation. The one is you've got the gift, you know, whatever, which kind of makes you think, okay, he's the one. But then afterwards, he's talking about Morpheus also convinced me, which isn't that conflicting until she starts, like, agreeing with him. She's like, oh, poor Morpheus. You know, like, she doesn't say, yeah, Morpheus is a trickster. I think, yeah, I think that's part of, though, I think what they're trying to create with the character, the Oracle, that she's, like we talked about earlier, we don't know exactly what she wants. And we don't know what she's, her function, what she's doing. We don't really know her goals. Because she's very ambiguous. And she's kind of like, on one hand, she's comforting Neo.

19:00And then suddenly she's talking about something else. And then suddenly she's agreeing with the whole one thing. But suddenly she makes it sound like it's just a fake thing. You know what I mean? Yeah. Because next minute. Maybe that was part of the idea. We'll get the actual prophecy for Neo. You know, that's, he gets his own prophecy. This is all sort of banter before. So. Oh, right. Yeah. The whole. Yeah. But I'm really confused. I'm going to, well, you guys, I don't know. I'm confused. I'm thinking I'm going to look online and see what the actual opinion of the people is. You should. Oh, well, well, well, well. What do you think, Philip? I just think that she says, sorry, kiddo, you got the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something. And. So you'd interpret that as the sort of.

19:41You're the one. You're the one, but. It looks like you're waiting for something. Your potential is there, but it looks like you're waiting for something. He goes. And he goes, what? Your next life, maybe. Who knows? But see, that's interesting. Because like, that's the prophecy. That's the way these things go. And she's. The way she's talking is like, she's making those cookies. She's. That's her character, though. And the way it is delivered makes it feel like you shouldn't put emphasis on it. So. I don't think so, though. I think it's precisely because it's so. No, I think it's precisely because it's so nonchalant that we should pay attention to it because it works out in the end. Remember? Right. The whole story. She's making it sound like it's nothing, but it's actually everything.

20:23Yeah. Maybe, maybe the Oracle doesn't know. And this is just how her tricks, how she works. You know, she's like a classic witchcraft. She never gives the right answer. It's just ambiguous, you know? And at the end, she says, aha, I do. And it's like, you didn't know. You're just tricking us with your ambiguous speak. With your ambiguous ways. Well, then. What happens next? She goes. Then you laughs a little bit. Morpheus. He almost had me convinced. I know. Dude. Poor Morpheus. Without him, we're lost. And he goes, what's the next line? What do you mean without him?

21:04And she goes. Are you sure you want to hear this? Morpheus believes in you, Neo. That's where it stops. Yeah. Hmm. Can we talk about the. Yeah. The internet is a bit divided on this. It is. It is. Everyone. Some people think they got the gift. It's like she's agreeing with Neo that he's not the one. And some people are like saying exact same thing to us. You know, that yes, she's just confirming she's the one. But some are saying she's ambiguous on purpose because she doesn't really know. But she's just pushing him. Pushing him. But a lot of people, what they're saying, and this is in the context of all the movies, you know, that they were, you know, previous. Well, she did say being the one is like being in love.

21:44No one can tell you you're the one. You just know it. Which confirms to, I guess, her ambiguity. But if you look at the sequels as well, and we discover that were previous Neos who sort of did everything as the one, but they kind of failed at the end, you know. So being the one doesn't isn't really anything special at the end. It just it is a path for someone. So maybe she is telling him he is the one like the previous ones. But she doesn't know if Neo is the one one, which is very meta. But is the one one that will like break the cycle, you know, like what happens in the end. Oh, I see the single one. That he doesn't, you know, restart Zion, but he actually, yeah, spoilers.

22:27But he takes the other path, you know, and resets the whole thing. Maybe she's looking for that one, you know. If she is the Oracle and she's aware of all these past lives. So who knows? But yeah, the people are discussing it. People are. Why don't they discuss it on our podcast? Yeah, we should get all these people. Our preservation trust group. Our preservation trust. The Matrix Preservation Trust. Holiday themed now for Christmas. Guys, you know what I was thinking we should do? I'll tell you off air. Okay. Anyway, nothing you cut this out, but just a little Christmas theme website. What do you think of the line? Put a little hat, Christmas hat on this lady. Yeah, yeah. What do you think of the line, poor Morpheus?

23:10That's what I wanted to ask the question. My next question was, what do you guys think of poor Morpheus? And then she goes, without him, we're lost. What is this? I'll let you guys give your ideas and I'll give you my idea. I don't know. Why is she being so dismissive of her finest and, you know, most dedicated servant? It's weird because I think that she is... And coolest. He's the coolest. It's weird because she... But again, she both like... Balloos. Balloos. She believes these prophecies and maybe she does, she can tell prophecies, but at the same time she's skeptical and she's even showing outward skepticism of these prophecies. And then she goes, poor Morpheus.

23:50And to me, that was a dig at his dogmatism, like we talked about earlier. And she's saying like, oh, he just believes this stuff. Everything, you know. And it's like, okay. I mean, you want to go with it and say, yeah, that's true. Morpheus is a little out there with his, you know, sure beliefs. Yeah. But then at the same time, it's like, but then what are you saying here, Oracle? You know, what is your position? Because she's not making her position clear at all. At all. At all. She's just, you know, sitting on two chairs and I think purposefully. I don't know why though. That's what I'm thinking. I think that's because, well, it ties with both of the things. Why she's being ambiguous and why she's, you know, saying poor Morpheus.

24:31Because Morpheus is very one-sided. He sees the truth and he thinks truth is ultimate, which is completely opposite of what the Oracle is thinking. That we can derive from how she's talking. She's being ambiguous. It's like, well, you know, you're thinking I'm going to tell you the one, but I'm actually not going to do that, you know, which is the opposite of what Morpheus thinks. She comes and she gives the truth and that's it. So maybe that's why she's feeling like he's never going to get it. That poor Morpheus, he's trying so hard, but he will never understand of what I'm trying to convince him, which in the end is like what she's trying to convince of Neo. She's talking about the stuff like free will and you're not going to believe in this. And maybe that's a quality of the one that that person is so sure of, doesn't believe

25:17in faith. He believes in his control. Fate, by the way. Yeah, fate. Sorry. I can't. I just wanted to make it clear. And she doesn't give him the answer, which kind of confirms his beliefs of, you know what, there is no Oracle and the Oracle can't tell me who I am. And therefore I'm going to follow what I think my path is, which eventually leads him to being the one because he's sure of himself. Which leads him to be the top executive at Metacortex. That is very true. Because he's not following someone's, you know, designated plan. He's doing this by his own decision, which, you know, makes him sure of himself, you know, which ultimately is probably the best sort of attribute of the one instead of, you know,

25:58being this servant of like who Morpheus is, you know, that's why the one is better than Morpheus. And that's why she pities Morpheus because probably Morpheus is more dedicated than the one, but ultimately the one is more important or whatever, you know, these kind of, these kind of thoughts. They mentioned all these themes around, so this could be plausible. But I also wanted to say that on the other hand, even if I made it sound like what the Oracle is doing is a negative thing, I think that maybe in the end, really her ambiguity is a reflection of something more truthful than, for instance, Morpheus's side of her story. Where Morpheus is very, like we talked about, black and white, but life isn't black and

26:41white. And so maybe the Oracle is exemplifying that it's, there's more two things than they appear. Yeah. So who knows, you know? Yeah. I mean, even Morpheus is aware of it because remember he says, you know, she'll tell you exactly what you need to hear. Yeah. You know? So he gets it maybe. Without Morpheus, we're lost. Is that the next minute? No. Okay. Yeah. I mean, like literally maybe, you know, he, she can't go and unplug people and I don't know. Okay. Maybe she's saying like Morpheus, he gives us a regimented life of eating, um, goop every day and cleaning the ship.

27:25I don't know. Who knows? Okay. All right. I think that's it for this minute. That's it. Happy Hanukkah. We're going to find out more, uh, from, from the talkings of Neo and the Oracle. Absolutely. Um, tell us, tell us your interpretation of, of the scene. Please. Yes. I want to hear this. This is something we can discuss.
