0:00Welcome to The Matrix Minute! Whoa, whoa, hello! Welcome, it's Friday today, and we are going to talk about The Matrix. It's a great film. Great film, greater... What if Anthony Hopkins was the architect? What if he was Morpheus? Yes, that's right. Hey, we never talked about this, ever. Yes. What could have they called The Matrix instead of The Matrix? Give me some ideas, throw me some good stuff, the gold. So seriously, what would you call it? The Cyber Mom. No. Cyber Head. That's bad. Cyberspace. Serious submissions only. Mirror Image.

0:40Maybe. Unplugged? Have you seen Unplugged? Battery Man. Battery Man. What about like... Oh, The Construct. Huh? No, I don't think so. Are we talking about the movie, or are we talking about The Matrix itself? Movie, movie. Okay. Neo. Neo and Trinity. The One. The One could work. The Jently Thill. The One, and then it's like, The One and Neo is like, you know, in the marketing. It's like, you know, then everything's used. You could do, you could do, you could do the war, like, I got it, I got it. Multiplicity. Rage Against the Machine. I got it. Guys, free your mind.

1:22Have you seen, have you seen Free Your Mind? Free Your Mind. Have you seen Free Your Mind? It'll free your mind. How about just, Hey Choi? Hey Choi. Hey Choi. It's Choi. Cypher's Deceit. I seriously can't think of a good name. What if, yeah, what if they just made it sound like a, like a sitcom? Yeah, so, I seriously can't think of a good name. Morphe Me. Morphe Me. Morpheus is Evil Man. I don't know. I really can't think of any name. What are some bad names? Rage Against the Machine. I said that. Rage Against the Machine, yeah. Oh, you did? Black Phones. Equilibrium. Ignorance is Bliss. Oh, wow. All right, okay. Yeah, we're not,

2:02we're not getting anywhere. We're not getting anywhere with these. Virus. Yeah, Minute 68, guys. Enough of this. Enough. Enough. Okay, enough of this. Welcome to Minute 68. Welcome to a Friday. Yes, it's us again. And, you know, Anthony Hopkins could have been Morpheus. What? He could have been Morpheus. Anthony Hopkins. Phil, read us some descriptions. Okay. Yeah. In the car, Neo looks through the window in the rear seat to see the Matrix world. He spots a place that had really good noodles that he frequented. I used to eat there.

2:43Trinity is in the back seat with him and Neo asks her what it means that none of his life experiences were real. Trinity tells him that the Matrix cannot tell him who he is but an oracle can. Neo asks. Trinity confirms it. Neo then asks what she told her. Trinity hesitates to tell him about it. Do you understand what happened to me? Yes. This is, this is, yeah, this is, hmm. They're in the car. Neo's like, I love those noodles and he asks, More or less. what did the oracle tell you, tell you,

3:23what did the oracle Trinity? Trinity's like, she told me. She told me that. What we have is at the beginning, Neo is in the car and he's looking through the window. He's looking out the car. Yeah. He's in the car, he's looking through the window, isn't he? Yes. Well, you know, I just wanted to say that they filmed this scene with a rear projector. Thank you. I was going to say the first to order business we must talk about. Yes. It's the rear projection effect. to make the outside seem fake on purpose. So it looks like it's faker. So it's like Neo's perception of the real world he used to live in that felt so real to him is now, you know, fake-ish. You know what's ironic about that? It's fake-ish. I never caught on that that was a rear screen.

4:03Yeah, I know. And then that's what I wanted to say. It looks really good and it's better than using green screen, which we constantly see in movies and it just doesn't look as good as this. Technical question. So, as you can see, especially on Trinity's side, you can see the window and you can see shadows pass. How did they do that? Did you just have like random people like wave palm leaves? Absolutely. Yeah, just like, just like, the oldest technique you could think of. Yes. We did that before and it's like super easy and if you can't do that you use a conveyor belt and just have like the thing go on. Okay. Yeah, because I think what they have is they have rigs with lights

4:44and they're probably on some kind of motors or something. If not a motor, it's just a guy turning them. Yeah. And you just kind of sequentially make a spin so you get the effect that some shadows are passing which means objects are passing like lamps and stuff like that. Yeah. It looks so good. as well that you can't hear the car at all. It's just music and them talking. There's no street sound. Oh, there's a bit of street sound. There's a bit of car though. Yeah. But it's very quiet. It's nice. Yeah, but that kind of rear projection technique is age old and obviously you guys know that and, but it, it started being used in movies in the 1930s because their shutter synchronization was possible.

5:25They developed it so that both shutters can sync. so the film projector and the shutter of the camera will be in sync so they can do rear projection in the 1930s. And yeah, so in modern movies like Space Odyssey, that's kind of modern I guess, they used rear projection, projection, and there's Pulp Fiction which also used rear projection and T2 and Aliens. T2, yeah, Jim Cameron used rear projection all the time. It's probably like for nostalgic reasons. I mean, like you have Like the motorcycle scene. Oh, really? He used rear projection there where the, where the truck was coming close to Arnold and James Furlong and you know what, Eddie Furlong. Once you notice it, Eddie Furlong. Oh, sorry, yeah, Eddie. Oh, and just to describe

6:07to the people, I think I have this right but correct me if I'm wrong but rear projecting what it means you're projecting an image but you're not projecting directly onto the image so it doesn't shine, you're projecting from the other side to a semi-translucent sort of, you know, like a sheet or something. Yeah, so it doesn't actually shine, it just shows the image there so it looks natural, it doesn't look like a projector. Yeah. And the sheet is obviously next to the window. Yeah. We did a very similar effect in one of our Matrix fan movies where we projected Matrix code on us so it's like, yeah, yeah, we did. No rear projection, just three. Just straight up projection. Just straight up projection. We did the same thing with our Mummy fan film little tiny movie

6:48when we were 12, Jacob. Yeah, I was standing in front of the projector. Yeah. Contrast was a little bit different. Yeah, yeah. So, unbelievable, isn't it? Morpheus comes in and he's giving his words of wisdom. Morpheus is doing that weird smile again. Yeah. Unbelievable. This rear projection, beautiful. Well, because I was thinking about this, since we were talking about these past ones, false ones, like Eddie and so on. Yeah, Eddie. Now the cat's out of the bag. I was thinking about in that context, it's a little bit weird, like Morpheus, now all I'm thinking is Morpheus want to see what's his reaction to coming into the Matrix. Yeah. How is it different to the other guys?

7:29yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you can see like if we take that into consideration, Morpheus is waiting to look at Neo's face to see what Neo does. He just never gets tired This one's different, of that. Trinity. This one's different. Yeah, he's asking questions, much more questions than Eddie. So we don't see the driver, but I'm assuming Epon is driving, right? Trinity. How many questions did Eddie ask? Two. That is true. Neo asked 30. I think he's the one. So I'm assuming that Apoc is driving even though we don't see him. Yeah, I think so. But if he is, Apoc is usually driving, yeah. But if he is, when we come back, Apoc is sitting there. Oh wait, so no one's driving? Who's driving? Because clearly Morpheus is and we don't see him on the wheel.

8:10Switch is there as well later on. We'll find out, but I'm pretty sure. Oh wait, wait, I think it's Cypher. Because Cypher gets to the car, remember guys? Oh yeah. So it's good old Cypher's driving. So it's so weird that he put that phone in the trash can and, you know, Apoc and Switch are there, bored out of their minds, waiting for him. I just hear him. Yeah, and they're like, what's going on? Mr. Reagan? Is that you? Mr. Reagan? Mr. Reagan? Do you have the access code? Mr. Reagan. Just from the trash can. It's probably Bird. It'll be fine. So it is Cypher, too, but we don't get a nice little close-up of Cypher driving. Yeah. So Neo continues to be He's probably picking out his new place

8:51where he's going to live. Neo continues to be in awe of returning to the Matrix, his past home for however old he is. We still don't know. There's no confirmed that he needs. Because he messed it up with his passport. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Lying to the authorities. And he's, you know, He's a ripe, age of 33, let's say. Yes, definitely. Like Jesus was, so it's perfect. It's perfect. And so Neo is like talking about he can't believe that he's back. But then he's like, look, I used to eat there. I love that. That's great. He's like, look at that. Wow, I used to eat there. And Tim never heard this when he was younger. Yeah, I've never heard that line. This is quite a good. Really good noodles.

9:32Yeah. Really good noodles. And Trinity's like, yeah. Yeah. I never liked Trinity's look because she's almost looking like she's a mad man. she's looking that because she's like, I've been there. They're crap. What's wrong with him? Neo has poor taste. He's probably disappointed in Neo like. And her glasses look weird from that like angle as well. They look like, I don't know, weird places. They look like a brassiere for her eyes. I like her glasses. Come on guys. The glasses are fine. It's just from this sort of angle that she looks weird. And so Neo says, all those memories of my life. We're not going to talk about the noodles? I thought we were going to talk about like what noodles he probably took. I don't know. I don't know. Noodles are noodles. The question is, do you think that Neo is into like cuisine

10:12and do you think he's like, knows the difference between different noodles? He was really poor. Or do you think he goes to his American Chinese restaurant? That's the one. I think whatever, after a day of working and then hacking, he's like, oh, I'm hungry. Oh. And then runs down to the street and grabs noodles. And he goes, you know how like the Chinese restaurants have numbers for like their menus, the dishes? He's like, 12, 12. 12, 12 now. So it's just fried noodles. Just the regular. Really good noodles. No wonder Trinity's like, yeah, sure. Trinity's like, oh man. Yeah. You've been down that road. You know how those noodles taste. Is there anything else you want to add with the noodles? That's about it. Okay. Yeah. And then Neo says, all these past memories aren't real,

10:53which again is like the whole thing we've been talking about forever with the Matrix. But I think they're real. Well, of course they're real. For him, I think the Neo is, here's my theory. The Neo isn't making any kind of philosophical statements. I think he's just shocked that on a technical level he's been living in a computer program. And so he's sort of thinking like, oh man, like I did all these things and I had these experiences, but technically it wasn't in the real world. Yeah. It's so weird what he's saying. None of them happened. Yeah. They did happen. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. It's undermined me. Like, I don't know. Like I know they're against the Matrix, so they have sort of like a ideology,

11:34ideological. Yes. Thank you, Jacob. You are my savior. You're my own. It's okay. Jesus Christ. Against the Matrix, I understand them. But it's like, don't like, they were, you didn't, again, you know, I'm defending all these poor people. Those are your experience. Those are your life. Exactly. Don't be like, oh, it doesn't mean nothing now. It's like, it's pointless. Those noodles suck. And then he's like, I'm not a dream with that statement. But again, I have to defend Neo a little bit. I think that Neo's just thinking out loud. Yes. I don't think Neo is really. Neo's just like, oh, those weren't real noodles. They were just like, you know, digital noodles. Oh, man. He's like, oh, he's kind of like, yeah, I love those noodles.

12:15And Morphus knows. He's like, you have not been to the one on Wabash. You know, it brings down, brings it back to, to Malice. Oh, and then Morphus, sorry. And then Morphus goes, have you ever guys been to 41? And, and, and Cypher just starts to red. Cypher is just, Cypher starts to freeze up. Yeah. He's like red. He's like, changing the topic. What about you, Cypher? 41? Has the Oracle contacted us? Are we on time? Yeah. Yeah. Is this, is this Oracle calling? Should I turn here? And of course, Morphus just goes, mm-hmm. Anyway,

12:55as usual. As the Cypher go, whew. And so after, Neo goes to that little, period of whatever, and then he turns to Trinity, and he goes, Trinity, what's the line? What does it mean? And she's like, the Matrix cannot tell you who you are. I like that. That's some wisdom from Trinity right there. Yeah. That's great. Okay, tell me. Unwrap this. Yeah, give us, why is this precious? I just like it, because Trinity is trying to tell Neo, don't focus and concentrate on these differences between the Matrix and the real world. You have to discover who you are, based on, just going through life. So it doesn't, it doesn't matter. Just like the moral of the story we learned in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, when we watched it yesterday. Secret of the use. Yes.

13:35And the moral of the story was, you might not be special, but you can live your life in a special way. You can live your life in a special way. I don't know if that's verbatim, but it's close. I don't think that's what, well, in my humble personal opinion, I think that's what, I think she's more of, you know, that who you are is not defined by your life at all. You know, like your experiences mean nothing. I think that's what she's trying, like, you are destined to be whoever you are. And it's like, it's like written inside you. And just because you go get noodles or do something like that, that like, there's more to your life than, than just what you do, which I don't agree with.

14:16I like this. Of course it doesn't. This is great. I like that too. But I would combine them. I would say it's that plus your experiences. Yeah. But the takeaway for me was that I think Trinity just trying to kind of take Neo a little bit. She's trying to be mysterious. She knows what the Oracle told her. She's like, Neo, I'm so cool. She's just trying to nudge Neo away from this sort of black and white thinking that Neo is still stuck at, apparently. Yeah. It's not real. Look at this. Fake. I always thought she's going a little deeper. Fake. Yeah. And then after that happens, Trinity, Trinity, Neo finally goes. But an Oracle can tell me who I am.

14:57And what does she say? That's different. And then Neo says, Why? Go back to good old Neo. No, because I want to, I want to ask. Did you go to her? And she says, yes. What did she tell you? And she said, Okay, so this is Trinity. So Trinity's put on the spot here. Neo has no clue what he's asking. And Neo is just like any other dude, just ask, ask, ask. Yeah, Jazz and Boglow, whoever the characters are not in this. Yeah. Jazz and Big Ghoul. I don't remember. Yeah. Cubist or whatever his name is. Cubist. Cubist. Yeah, that's a good one. And he goes, what did she tell you? She's on the spot now. Trinity, my big question is,

15:37what was she planning to say? What's she going to say? She told me that. Well, I like her smile. First of all, the cheeky. Yeah. Well, I'm not going to tell you. Yeah, of course. It's like, it's like, what do you guys think? If you were Trinity, what would you say? Is this spoiler free? She's going to be like, spoiler free or no? Is this spoiler free? This is spoiler full. This is full of spoilers. So the Oracle apparently told her that she will fall in love with the one. Yes. Right. So at this point, do you think Trinity's like in love with, with Neo? I guess she is because she brought up the food. She's figuring it out, but I think she's, yeah, she's attracted to him because she, if she wasn't, she could have said it'd be like cheeky, you know,

16:18like, Oh, she told me I fall in love with the one. She's definitely interested. I think. Don't get your hopes up. And plus in combination with what the Oracle told her, I think she's waiting for that to line up. But if she's like a full on, full blown crush right now, I don't think she would say it. She would like it. She wouldn't want to ruin it. I think she, I think she wouldn't say it ever. I mean like, yeah, I mean she would later, but not now in the car. And she's just thinking this car cannot go any faster. Now there's two of them. Cypher's reddening in front and in Trinity. And then Morpheus turns out. Oh, the girl's a trip. Morpheus is happy. He cannot be happier. We're going to visit the Oracle. Maybe I get my one. Yeah. Yeah. And then he turns around and Neo is like, Oh, the last one said the same thing about the noodles.

16:59And then he starts to redden as well. That's a car. What would you say as a coverup to Neo as Trinity? If the car is not going to stop another 10 minutes. She told me to follow my heart. It is going to stop immediately. I know, but theoretically. Yeah. That's what I said. She, she, she told me to follow my heart. That's a good one. That's a good saver. Maybe she just pulls the Morpheus card as well. She told me everything I need to hear. Yeah. You could do it that way. Or you could just be like, you could leave it at cliffhanger and be like, she told me, ask me another day. I'll say, I guess, but then you'll be like, huh? What? Why? Oh, Oh, you know what? She,

17:40she could say, she told me I will confirm the one. Because, uh, what, what she told, uh, Morpheus, he'll find the one, right? Yeah. And she, she, she confirms the one. And then a Cypher, she goes, the Cypher goes to the oracle. It's like, you will kill the one. What do you think Cypher got? You're not the one. No, that's true. Maybe he's the first one. Maybe. Morpheus unplugged thinking he's the one. But because Cypher is so like, you know, he's not into this. He clearly avoided death. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Guys were just like, I'm the one. Poor Eddie.

18:20May his soul rest in peace. He tried so hard. Wanted to press on. He got so far. Morpheus. Not just Morpheus, but that girlfriend. And the saddest thing is that when you mentioned Eddie, if you ever mentioned Eddie, it's a Morpheus. He'll just go. We're getting close to the oracle. Ignore. Ignore. I don't know. What would you say, Jacob? I think I would do, I would do, I would do something like, like that. I'd be like, well, she told me something that I feel I probably shouldn't. Save it for another time. Leave it a cliffhanger. Because if I was interested in Neo, I'd probably, you know, make him wonder like, what?

19:01Also, a sort of, you know, what were those like, errors of filmmaking? If you can see clearly on Trinity shot, she has pierced ears, but no earrings. And I would say you wouldn't, you wouldn't program pierced ears without earrings. If you're going to the matrix. Yeah. Well, what about Neo? Neo also has pierced ears. Oh, really? Yeah. I mean, now we're seeing. What? Yeah. Yeah. Seriously? Oh, you can actually see it in light as well here. Yep. So yeah, that wouldn't probably, if they, if they were going to the matrix, they wouldn't, you wouldn't see that. Like, there's no point of like, adjusting your residual self for earrings without earrings.

19:43You'll probably just go to default. True. Full ears. I guess, or maybe you just, I don't know, copy, paste, and then like fix yourself up. What product do you think Trinity is using for her hair? Yeah. Just like, just the, just the dozers, uh, grease. Oh no. Well, you mean in the real world. Okay. No, no, here in the matrix. Yeah. The finest quality grease product you can find. Yes. Everything is, everything is available to you. I know. Yeah. Just the finest. Morpheus could be wearing like a billion dollar suit for all we know, you know, he just uses it because he can. That's pretty cool though. If you think about it, you go to the matrix and it's like the best. Oh, it's so comfy. I really want to find out if the Wachowskis ever commentated on the

20:23rationalizations of their, of their outfits. I mean, it's, it's obvious it's cool. So, and they must be cool. So they're dressed cool, but did they ever think of like, why would, you know, like, cause they're hackers. That's a good question. To be honest, like, like if somebody asked them, like, why are they all like wearing sunglasses and cool outfits? Is it like, Oh, they're incognito. They're hiding. Or it's like, I don't know. Like probably would become a common B. But the thing is like, they all look cool together, Morpheus and his crew. But when you go to matrix reloaded and you see everybody wears the same stuff, it looks silly. Especially when there's some older people like the cat. The only guy who looked okay was the captain guy because you know, the grumpy captain,

21:03the white guy. You think so? Yeah. Uh, he actually just wore a normal suit. Like, right. With, with suits would be okay. Yeah. But not like a leather crocodile. Yeah. And there's this like older woman who's, who wears like this crocodile skin. It doesn't look. Well, here's, here's my question. Since everybody's faking is, if it was the, that's what they are. Um, storyboards of the matrix. I don't know if that's directly visually any direction from the Wachowskis, but Neo is wearing some crazy stuff. Oh, he's wearing some crazy stuff. He's wearing like a, maybe a leather jacket, but a short leather jacket, jeans, uh, tennis shoes, like Converse. Tennis shoes, yeah. Converse, Chuck, and, uh, actually, if you look at the storyboards for,

21:43uh, long hair, Tani Kuretake's, uh, colored storyboards for when Neo turns into the one. Mm-hmm. And, you know, he confronts Agent Smith for the last time at the, you know, in the hallway when he resurrects, he's just wearing a white t-shirt and, uh, jeans and tennis shoes. Wow. So now here's the question, right? If that was influenced by the Wachowskis, or they wanted that, do you think they had a change of opinion? Yes. Later, like, oh, I'm like, well, I know they did because it changed the film, but do you think it was something inspired by the times? Maybe by the costumes then, maybe by Kim Barrett. Or do you think it was something where they universally thought like, this actually works? Or they went, this works because it's cool right now. I think it's because it works.

22:23Because, Yeah. When they're, when they're going through the, the costuming, and it's like, okay, so Neo is in the construct. He's going to go rescue Morpheus. He's not going to be wearing those, that white shirt, t-shirt. Do you think Kim, do you think she was influenced by the times? Or do you think she was going at a pretty? I don't know. I think, I don't know. Yeah. It's hard to tell because even in the sequel, everyone, like even the, like Mary Wingen's bad guy, they all, bad guys, they all wear the same stuff, like sunglasses and leathery stuff. And, you know, everyone's like, everyone who's not a agent or normal person, like wear some kind of, you know, jacket-y, leathery stuff. Can you get someone, because that was one of our podcast suggestions,

23:06like on the, on our, I don't know. On our preservation trust. On our, on our quiz up, on our survey. That's what it was. See, I always have to take off like two or, two or three words that are, you know, and then I'll remember, then I'll remember the actual word. Um, please, on our survey, join us at our preservation trust survey. Yep, our preservation trust survey. Preserve the matrix podcast. Help us save the wild bison. Help us save the matrix podcast. Yes. Um, I want to say, on our survey, there was one person saying that they would like to see, hear more about the costuming. So, we need to get someone who's, fairly expert-y,

23:47actually, in costuming. Besides, it's going, oh, leather. Oh, good leather. Suit. Beautiful suit. If you know anyone, or if you'd like to be on the show, and if you're a costumer, or interested in costumes, costume designing, costume designing, uh, drop us a line, you know where. The matrix made that one. Cool. Email us. And I think that's, that's our minute. We talked about the whole thing. I'm really looking forward to Oracle. It's been a while since I've heard her, farts, her words. And I think there's a bit of controversy coming, coming on. Remember, guys, that we discovered that I have, maybe have misinterpreted her words. Okay. For a very,

24:27very long time. You will have to remind us. We will. So I can't wait to get to the bottom of this. Ooh, yes. So anyway, I just take this opportunity to thank everyone, and to thank you, listener, for joining us this far. And surviving, surviving just us again. Exactly. Until we wrangle up some more guests. I don't want to say we apologize, but we, if you enjoy the guest episodes more. I apologize for nothing. We, that's what I said, I apologize. But if you do like the guest episodes more, we hope you're cool with just hanging out with us these past weeks. And for now, it's going to be more of us. Yeah. For at least two weeks. Until we get some new guests lined up.

25:08But thanks so much. I mean, we had Emma. That was great. That was cool. That was a guest. Nutritionist. And we also got information, which is nice. As opposed to our misinformation. Yes. Our preservation trust. Our preservation misinformation trust. We try to get accurate information, but just saying that we have. We. Sorry, Phil. That's the correct term. Phil tries to get accurate information. I just speak whatever words come up. Guys, don't you want to thank our listeners collectively? Yeah. You guys are awesome. Yes, exactly. And let's all just say thank you together. Three, two, one. Thank you.

25:49Come on, guys. You ruined it. It was supposed to be great. Okay. I did. I did my part. Ah, Philip. Let's do it again. Philip. Three, two, one. Thank you. Ah, see. For preservation of this trust, please complete the survey and believe that the matrix cannot tell you who you are. You must read the horoscope. Yes. You must trust in yourself. Are you a double fish? I'm a double fish. What is that called again? Double fish. Was it twins or something? I don't know. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Aquarius. Something like that. It's the age of Aquarius. Anyway, we'll catch you guys on Monday.

26:30Wait, yes, Monday. Yes, yes, yes. Have a great weekend, my friends. Have a great weekend. Yeah, enjoy it. Goodbye. See you. Bye-bye-bye.
