0:00The Matrix Minute, a podcast where we discuss the first film one minute at a time because we love this movie. Hi, I'm Phil, and the Wachowskis said in an interview that they would take the blue bill. Oh my goodness. Really? Yes. What? They want to get tucked in by Morpheus. Amazing. They don't want to do it through the hassle. It's like that's too much work. That sounds so antithetical to all what they wrote about. Well, we're going to have to get on a podcast. Maybe they're just doing it on purpose, like, throw a bone. To be cool. But on the other hand, you know what I mean? You can write about something. It doesn't have to be your personal opinion. Yeah. You can just be an observer. Like Steven Spielberg. Steven Spielberg said that he was...
0:40By the way, my name is Jake. If he was in World War II, he would be the coward in Saving Private Ryan, who didn't help his friend. You know what? Sadly, he probably would as well. Yeah. My name is Jake the Coward, and next to me is Tim. Tim, are you a coward? Tim the Liar? I am a first grade coward. First grade, does that mean good or bad? No, it means like the best coward. First grade. First grade. Got it. First grade. First grade coward. First graders are usually cowards. So here's something I have to say about things. In a previous episode, the last one that you just listened to and recorded a few minutes ago, but... Hey, let's not...
1:20Let's not break the illusion. Let's not reveal our secrets to record in a couple of batches. Let's not reveal that secret. You mentioned the green screen glasses, the spoons, and that reminded me of that green screen is forever more associated with the Matrix for me, because that's the first behind the scenes that I've seen the green screen use instead of the blue screen. And I remember, I don't know who was I working with, but I was about 12 or 13. Maybe it was you guys, but I remember not fighting, but having a little argument because the other person wanted to use blue screen. I said, no, green screen is better. Really? Yes. Yes. Green screen is the new technology. You were like, green screen is better. I saw it in the Matrix. But you know who's right?
2:02Who's right? You are right. Because green screen is better for digital. Oh, it's like the little pixels are easier to... Yes, yes, yes. The, how do you say it? Sensor. Sensor? Yeah. The sensor. Yeah. The sensors of digital cameras, they have more green... I don't know what it's... I don't know the technical term, but the little dots that it records, it has more green... Isn't it green, red, and blue? Yeah, blue, but it has more green. So it's easier for it to pick up... It picks up more green than it does blue or red. So green screen is... That's why green screen is... We should look into this, because I think even... Isn't it the opposite? Like, LCD screens have more green? Or do they? Or is it equal?
2:43I don't know. I don't know about LCD screens. I don't know about screens. I'm just talking about the camera sensor. Yeah, I know. I just remind you of... And that's why nowadays everyone's using green screens, because they're all doing... When was the last time... Wasn't, like, blue screen... I remember, like, Star Wars Force One was blue. Yeah. Something that was a combination. Most of the Matrix stuff is blue screen, because it's all green there. Oh, yeah. Well, all the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 came out, and I saw some behind the scenes, and it was all blue screen, even though... Oh! Even though... Oh, because... Because... Because... Zatanna? Is that her name? Saldana. She's green. Zoe Saldana. But what's her... What's the actual... What's the character's name? She's green, so I guess that... Uh... Not Nebula, the other one. Huh. Nebula's her sister.
3:24Yeah. Poop. That was pretty cool in the second Guardians of the Galaxy that Jake didn't see, where they were chasing each other. It reminded me of Halo. But... Yeah, exactly. It was fun. Halo multiplayer. That was totally Halo mode with a banshee. But... But... You know... You know... The Mary Poppins dude? Jacob's just going... Wink. Mary Poppins... I'm laughing. Uh-huh. Mary Poppins dude. Yes, they did a... There's a different technique that they used. He's blue. He's blue, and he has blue screen behind him. How does that work? Explain this to me. Wait a second. Who's blue? The man with the... Mary Poppins? Yeah. What's his... What's his face? The... The original Mary Poppins? Dick Van Dyke? No, not Dick Van Dyke. No, I'm talking about Guardians of the Galaxy, and... Oh, pfff. Oh! Yondu! Yondu. He's blue. Yondu.
4:04Where's the Mary Poppins? You need to watch the movie. You need to watch the film. Uh, he's blue, and he's got blue screen behind him. How does that work? Masking. Masking. They're gonna... Someone... Some poor sap is gonna, like... Some poor old sap's gotta mask that. Poor soul will have to go... Have you seen the making of King Kong? Poor... Poor people have to go and cut everyone out. Roto everyone out. Even though there's blue screen. Yeah, even though there's blue screen, but they always keep... You know, their hands sometimes go over the blue screen, and... Yep. Okay. So, basically, isn't it just, like... They use blue screen or green screen just as, like, a fallback? They can maybe do a computer default setting and get most of it out, but then eventually someone will have to mask it out. Jacob, Tim, I am waiting for that camera to come out where it will be able to...
4:44Oh, I thought you were gonna say I'm waiting for the episode to begin. Now I'm waiting for the camera to come out where we're finally being able to have it automatically... Dude, it's gonna happen. Look... The Lytro guys. Yes. Oh, yeah, the one with the... I have no clue what they're doing now, but I believe in that technology. I believe in it, too. A hundred percent. It's possible... Do you know how amazing that'll be? You shoot stuff, and then you can go later and post and say, believe the background. To be honest, like, that might be possible maybe even sooner before those guys finish it on, like, a consumer sort of cheapo level on iPhones, because, you know, they have the two lenses and everything. And they have some pretty good depth detection in those, in little two cameras, so maybe we'll see maybe something. I mean, I think theoretically all you need is just some kind of sensor to be able to detect
5:25the distance between... Shoot a projection, a missile projection, some kind of, like, sensor that would detect the depth. Yeah, from two or three, you know, like, so you can have the... It can differentiate that and say, you're this close, and that's that far, and just... Yeah, it knows. Perfect. That'd be awesome. Minute. By the way, you know they already have automatic... They were testing automatic... Butt wiping. Focusing for, like, harnesses for... Makes sense. Lenses. There's a bunch of automatic stuff. Yeah, like, you can just put that little badge into your, you know, shirt, and... Oh, yes, and it focuses on... Your coat pocket, and then the camera will be able to, you know, use a... So actors just wear little... No one uses that, because rack focusing is still a job, so...
6:05Yeah, they probably got a union of the focusers. What if a rack focuses listening to this podcast? Not rack focusing, what am I talking about? Focus pulling. Focus pulling. The pullers have a union. I'm bad at speaking today. We all are. It's okay. We all are. Tim was yesterday. I was... Two days ago. Yeah, two days ago. They call me King Speech. We'll see until the next episode. Ooh, we'll be bad at speaking then. Find out. All right, so... This is minute 20... 30. No, 30! We're 30. 3-0. Big 30-0. Big 30-0. We're closer to a midlife crisis. Wow. We pretty much have gone through the stages of being a teenager when you think you're right. When is officially a midlife crisis? Isn't it the 50s? No, it could be anywhere from 40, I would say. Oh my goodness.
6:45You know, you have your quarter life crisis when you're about 23, 24, when you're like, oh, such a teenager. That's me. I was terrible. And then you go through the stage like, I'm amazing. And then you think you're great. You innovate yourself. You work on your life. You fix all your mistakes. And then you come up to like 45 and you're like, what's the point? Everyone hates me. I hate this. I worked. I worked. And now I'm old and broken. And I have gray hair and a fat belly. That's us. We're approaching that. But wait. But then you accept that and go, wait a second. That's not true. Yeah. I did some great stuff. And then you're an old man. I still have life left and I'll appreciate everything in my life. Yep. You go around, make it in the gym. It's just flopping about because you don't care.
7:27You survive the midlife crisis. Nothing matters anymore. I'm 40. I don't care. Yeah. That sounds actually pretty nice. Thomas Wilson has the best song for that. I'm 40 and I Don't Care by Thomas F. Wilson. That's good stuff. So minute 30. Tell us. What is the description for minute 30? Minute 30. Neo takes the red pill. Did you guys ever even know that? I mean, like, come on. Not before Morpheus warns him though. We have to build it up because this is the, you know, the, the, because when we talked about who will Neo take. You already revealed it. Too late. Minute 30. Morpheus warns him that it's all the truth. And Neo takes the red pill. After a glug of that water, Morpheus leads him out to the operation station, the chop shop
8:11as it were. And we see the others of Morpheus's crew and the bald white guy with the goatee. Who's that? They're using weird technology and Neo sits in the chair with plugs on him. Morpheus, Morpheus. Morpheus tells Neo that the pill he took is part of a trace program. Okay. A lot of stuff going on. They walk in from one room to another room. So he goes, remember, all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more. What a warning. Before taking the pill. I was going to say, what do you guys think about this? Because in my opinion, I get Morpheus and I think he's just trying to be honest. But if we take Tim's stupid charlatan theory into the case, he's just messing with him because
8:52he's this psychopath guy. But if he's the actual Morpheus, I know he's trying to be honest with Neo. And he's trying to say like, hey man, I'm not trying to trick you. That's what he's saying. I know. But it's weird because Neo, right before he grabs the pill, it's almost like saying, well, you're going to die or something. Yeah. Like you're going to see some weird stuff. But if you want, I mean, you can still not take it. But I mean, I don't know. To me, I think it's not even that. I think he's trying to entice him, I guess. He's like, you know, he's trying to begin to be more prophetic. I don't know what the word is. Prophetic? I guess. But he's like, you know, nothing truth but the truth.
9:34You know what I mean? I think this isn't that like another quote from like some kind of spiritual text or something. I don't know. But again, Neo... Well, it's before you go into court. You swear there's nothing but the truth. So help me God. Is that how it goes? Yeah. So help me God. But on the other hand, Neo's just like, he's made up his mind like three weeks ago when he saw Trinity. True, true. He's that kind of a guy. He's a simple guy. Well, I'm wondering why did Morpheus have to say that? He is our vessel because we're watching the film and we want to see what happens. So of course... If I was Morpheus and if I wanted Neo to be the one and take the rest of it... Just drop it. Whoop! Oh, try to get it, Neo. No, drop the blue pill. Drop the blue pill. Try to get it. Whoops. Well, it's one choice only.
10:15No, I wanted to say that if I was Morpheus, I would never say that to Neo right before he takes the pill because dude, I'm going to scare him off. The funny thing is that... He's strong. I haven't seen this movie for a while between when I was a kid and then I saw it a couple of times later on. For some reason in my head, I remember the movie, he goes for the blue pill and then Morpheus says... Oh, weird. I remember I offer the truth, whatever. And then he chooses the red pill. In my mind, I think after watching this movie 30 times, that was in my head. And then I just realized now, that's not the case. He always just goes for the red one. And he just sort of... Yep. He's like, are you sure? That would be really silly. That would be so silly.
10:56That's what a 12-year-old thinks. That'd be ridiculous. He's like sitting there, all this is right, and then the last minute... He takes the blue pill and he goes, remember, it's all the truth, nothing more. Yeah, that makes no sense. But it's still, I don't know, funny in my head. That is funny to remember that, though. Yeah, because I'm watching this like, wait, wait, when does that part happen when he goes for the other one? It's like, he never goes for it. Neo's never doubting. He's just like, yeah, let's do this. Let's go. I'll take it. He isn't a doubting Thomas in this case. No. He's a believing. He isn't a doubting Thomas Anderson. Yeah. There's a little hesitation. What else you got? So Neo then takes the pill. He takes it, grabs it, and then... And also... I just want to say that when he puts it in his mouth, the moment Keanu's acting, I have
11:40to commend this again, very expressive for just staring at someone and taking a pill. Because for me, it always looks like, he just looks like he really conveys 100% of what the character is feeling. He drinks almost the whole cup as well. He's a mad man. That's what I wanted to say. I wanted to say that Neo is exactly like me, because whenever I take pills, I always drink a bunch of water. Just to make sure. Free water. I absolutely hate, and I can't believe some people do this, they drink pills without any water. Yeah. You just build up some saliva and it goes in. That's so nasty because then you feel it. You feel it in your throat. You feel the pill and it almost seems like it's just going to be stuck there.
12:20Man, I could never honestly do that. I can't imagine. So you can actually do that. You can actually swallow a pill without any water. I have to be like Neo. I have to drink a gallon of water. In movies, they just take a bunch of pills and they just swallow them. That's a bit hard. If you just build up a little bit of saliva and then you just pop your pill in there, it's a little vessel and it goes down into your bed. Well, here's another thing about that. It's like he's drinking that water and he's maintaining eye contact with Morpheus. He is determined. He's like, oh yeah? Watch me do this. Do you like this? Do you like this, Morpheus? Keep smiling, you weird man. Yeah, Morpheus is body language as well. It's really fantastic because Lawrence Fishburne, I think he really got that right.
13:05The way he uses his arms in this scene after Neo takes the red pill. He's like, you know how he slowly opens his palms to the different pills and he does it in such a nice, like graceful way. And then... Graceful? He's creepy as hell. Look at him. It's like you take the blue pill. The story ends and stuff like that. And then, you know, after Neo's drinking... Problem. Exactly. Morpheus, Morpheus actually, he moves his arm back a little bit. And I just like how he holds his hands in different ways and the way he actually kind of like makes little robotic movements and these very statuesque things. He's a very strange character at this point. Yeah, well, it's just different ways how you illustrate a character in a film.
13:50And it's really good stuff, especially how it fits with the tone of this movie. That's all I wanted to mention. It's just... That's kind of... That's the illustrative art of acting. Mm-hmm. And I also think that we don't... Still, at this point, if you're watching The Matrix for the first time, you are really not sure what's going to happen and you don't know. This could all be something horrible. Yeah, I thought... I could... I had some second thoughts when I was watching this when I was a child. And I always thought that it might have been like a ruse. Yeah. Let's talk about some of the amazing equipment that I have. I was going to say that we then transitioned into the most pointless tech room in the world. Yeah, so there's this whole other room where Morpheus' Nebuchadnezzar men are waiting.
14:31So they go from one room and they go to the meeting room with the two armchairs. Yeah. They stand up and they walk into a completely different room. Yeah, he's like, follow me, Neo. And in the other room... So they've been waiting this whole time. So they're just doing technical stuff while Morpheus is doing this. So we see Trinity. We're reunited with Trinity. And the first guy we see is Cypher in the wide shot. That big sweeping master shot. Yeah, we have the two people we know, Switch and Apoc. We've seen them in the car. And then we have a new guy, a mustache man. Mm-hmm. And he's looking at Neo all the time as Neo moves. In the original script, it's pretty interesting because Cypher actually tells Morpheus like, I didn't think he would... There's an interesting part in the 1996 script.
15:12We don't have to go into that because there's no section that's long for the script. But just wanted to say that... Just a second. Morpheus... Hmm, Switch's costume is weird. I never noticed that. Yeah, I was going to say it's just like a weird silver tube tank top. Yeah, silver thing. And then just... It's not even a tank top. It's just like... It's a little midriff jacket. Like a tube tiny... Tube thing. What's it called? Yeah, tubey tube. Tubey. I don't know. Tank top. Tube, tube, talk. It's not a tank top because a tank top would be... What is it called? Yeah, she just has this... On her torso, but this is just... It's almost like a... Think of like a... It's something called tube something. What do you... I don't know. What is Google?
15:53Tube something. Anyway, I wanted to say in the 1996 version, Morpheus just drops a pill on Neo's hands. He drops the pills in his hands? Yeah, so he's like... Yeah, he's like, hold out your hands. And then in Neo's right hand, Morpheus drops the red pill. Weird. This is your last chance after this. And Neo's looking at the pills, right? There's no turning back. Yeah. That could work too, honestly. And then his left hand, blue pill. Or you take the blue pill. Oh, in both hands. Oh. One hand. I thought it was all both pills in one hand. That'd be funny. You just shove it in his hand. Here's some pills. Take one of them. Yes, he does. A tube top. And it's interesting reading because like, Morpheus has a Cheshire cat smile. It's in the description. Oh, really? Cheshire's smile returns.
16:34What is it? Did you find the term? Yeah, yeah. Phil Phil never listens. He's just like, Cipher! Sorry. Let's hear it. What? What's the term? A tube top. Colloquially known in the UK as a boob tube is a shoulderous sleepless woman's garment that wraps around the upper torso. There you go. There we go. It's a tube top. Switch is wearing that. And a little trench coat. Never noticed. Yeah. A little coat. So anyway, I wanted to say that when they get into the room in the 1996 version, Cypher actually tells, you know, Cypher goes, ah, rats. That's amazing. And Trinity goes, I knew he would. You knew he would what?
17:15And Cypher saddles up to Morpheus and then talking in a hushed tone away from Neo, he says, Cypher tells Morpheus, Morpheus, I know that you believed, but I think this is a mistake. We're rushing him. He's old. I'm afraid he might pop. And then Morpheus says, haven't I always told you, Cypher, not to let fear control your life? Hey, Buck, are we online? Ooh. This is like, this is like listening to like a bad anime and everything you from the 1967, 1996 script, Trinity just sounds like the worst, like, oh, pixie girl, perfect sidekick where she's like, she's completely obsessed with Neo. Oh, what did Neo do?
17:56Oh, I know. Your hardware can't handle the software. It's just like, it's everything is about Neo. And she's just like, oh, Morpheus said this. Oh, Neo. She's a lot more cooler and more independent in this. Oh my goodness, guys. But I just wanted to say that Morpheus says, Apoc, are we online? And then Neo goes, Apoc, you're with the four horsemen virus. No. And Apoc goes, that's right. Oh my goodness, are you serious? Just more recognition of. Oh. Apoc's like, yep, that's me. That's me. So back to the useless equipment. Well, no, before you go to the useless equipment, there is, in the useless equipment, I think it's useful, I think it's great. And there's this screen, and on the screen you actually see they're selecting one of the pods.
18:36That's right. I never saw that in my entire life. The pumping one on the left, you mean? Yeah, the heart pod. Yeah. There's a screen, and it shows like... Some on-screen displays of like the heart rate thing from the real world, which we were going to see in the Nebuchadnezzar. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And a couple of other things that were, you know, custom made for this film. I just never noticed that they had like visuals and stuff for the pods and stuff. I thought it was all just code-based. I mean, for the visual effect, and for the viewer to, you know, to get immersed more, it makes sense that from within the Matrix they're doing this stuff. But to be honest, it makes no sense. I mean, why would you be hacking from inside a virtual problem? I don't even know. I don't know how this works or anything. I don't care.
19:16For me, I love it because... This huge desk full of monitors, there's like... It doesn't make sense. Like, would you hack... Who cares? Would you hack your computer from within Minecraft? You know what I mean? Look, it doesn't matter. It's cool. What are those VR goggles, Cypher? Nothing. That's also part of this minute. Is he looking into the pod? Yeah, he's looking into the pod saying, looks pretty old to me. Look at him. He has no eyebrows. He, he, he. You know, what's going on? I can see his wiener. Yeah, exactly. He's moving his arms. And then they have a bunch of audio interfaces on the left. I don't know. They're listening to his heartbeat. Yeah, big rack. Those are like rack devices for music studios. Old keyboards, video monitors. So, by the way, there's two little Sony production monitors.
19:57That Apoc is messing around with. Seriously? In the Master's Shop. Oh, yes. Those little monitors. I was trying to find out which one, because I hate those monitors. I'm so glad we're away from these ugly production monitors. Yeah. We don't need that crap anymore. Well, explain, Philip Perry, what is a production monitor? Production monitors are those little, like, portable televisions that have a better color calibration than you would normal television sets for regular people, so they're more expensive, or were. And they use them in film production when you're having to... They used them. They used them, yeah. Used them. Maybe some still do. In film production when you... They still do. Exactly. Tim is correct. You know, when you have to look at video playback. Well, the output of the film. Yeah, video playback. But now we have iPads, we have phones, we have sharp sticks.
20:39I always wondered, the feed on the little TV, is that directly from the film camera? It has to be. And if it is, how in the world do they do that? I don't know. What do you mean? Because the lens is there, because the lens takes in the light, and that prints it to the film, analog. We'll find out in the next minute. On an analog basis, with a film camera, it's all analog. So the question is, how in the world do you get that feed onto a screen? Usually you have, you know, because these are big cameras, they have mirrors, you know, they can have like mirrors. Oh yes! I'm an idiot! And then one of the mirrors can be reflected to a digital sensor, you know, that sends it to it. Correct! Oh my goodness! We're dumb, stupid morons!
21:21Wait a second, so you're saying the mirror is in the camera? Yes! Yeah, yeah, yeah. Some have built in. It's like a one-way mirror maybe. And then you have like an aux for it. And I know there was like some, you know, you can adjust the cameras, maybe some Panasonic's like that, like add-ons you can buy for the feed, you know? Cool! You know, you like plug it into that thing, and then you have a visual feed. So of course the quality isn't amazing, but it's enough to see what's going on. Yeah. On the set. I had no idea. I'm such a moron. Also, I think... I still don't know how... Sorry, sorry. How can you do the mirror if the light from the lens goes directly onto the film? You can have like a two-way mirror, you know what I mean? Like one that's angled, and then it goes through it to the... Wouldn't that degrade the quality? I don't know. There's all kinds of possibilities.
22:01I will do my research, so next episode we will conclude these things. It's a learning channel as well, by the way. Also, the thing on the left he's touching, Apoc, that looks like a video switch to me. Wait, let's specify what he's touching and when. Like above his little tiny useless keyboard? Yeah, so there's like a board with some buttons on it and a sort of circular... It's like a Commodore 64. And a big wheel. Usually video switches are there, and then it's a color selector. What's a video switch? Like if you're doing a live video, and then you have a bunch of feeds from like your camera one, camera two, camera three, and then you do the switching, like editing live is called switching. And then you have like your, you know, video feeds, and you click before them, between
22:42them, and you have sometimes transitions, transitions, you know, like little fades, and then like if you want to do green screen... That's all for live, live broadcasting. That's like a big, like usually like a big scrolly thingy for like... But it looks like that, but there's not, maybe not enough buttons for that. Who knows what that is? My favorite is in the background. They're like we mentioned before, the rack audio devices. They all have little blinky lights that are blinking on and off. I just wanted to say that this, that Sony monitor, it's called, I wanted to find out what it was, what it was actually, and it's a Sony Trinitron, PMV, PBM 8040. Ah, that's perfect, Trinity. Perfect. Yeah. But I think at the end we come to the most useless device of them all, which never made
23:23any sense at all, but there you have an automated phone dialer. Yes. What is, what is, what is the point of the automated, was it more precise? Because, you know, people exit through the phone line, right? Yeah. So why do they exit? This is something... Maybe that's doing the reverse to unlock your... Disphrase, pinpoint your input-output carrier program or whatever Morpheus is. This is something that always, I was wondering, why they can spawn and despawn it to phone lines, but not through cell phones. Yeah, I don't know that either. I think it's just... Was this ever explained? Hard line, hard line. It's a hard line, it goes through the wires. But it's still a virtual world, it doesn't matter.
24:06It doesn't matter at all. Yeah, it's true, it doesn't matter because anything you do, it's equal value. It's too easy then, but it's so easy with a cell phone. Yes, of course, for the movie it makes sense, but let's say, okay, so you have spawn points where you can only spawn, you know, come out and come in, and the hard lines. But the thing is that it's a phone. A phone can be installed, taken away, anywhere really. I guess it's a hard line. Yeah, but they're talking about, there's only specific areas they can actually get out from. Remember that? Are you ready for the mind-blowing explanation? That, if we take into account all three films, the machines know the humans are escaping, but they didn't want to make it too easy, so they disabled cell phones. So they coded it so the cell phones don't work, but the hard lines work, which are the phones.
24:49So it's basically like, you know, think of like encryption, where the humans, within the software, they can't hack the phones to do that, but only magically the hard line phones. Well, they missed an amazing visual opportunity, which I have used in my first Matrix fan movie. Oh, let's hear about your first amazing Matrix movie. Well, in my first Matrix fan-made movie, you can, you know, teleport with the phone. What? You can what? You can do the teleportation or unplugging, plugging with the cell phone. Oh, wow. And then you can do the whole thing when, you know, plug and the cell phone falls on the floor.
25:30In slow motion. Amazing. Perfect. That's great. Can we link it? I don't know, man. That's pretty bad. I just have two bears. Maybe later. Can we submit it to festivals? Yeah. I don't know. The copyright on the music. Mine might not let us. Yeah, the music. The copyright on the license first. Yeah. Linkin Park music. I'll get a copyright. You try to get the best of me. Yeah. Go away. Yeah. I remember that. I remember. Classic film. Classic film. It is classic. There's also, well, since Apoc has a nice little close-up in this, we can talk about the actor, Julian Arahania. Yeah. He is. Just like Mark Aiden Gray. You actually wouldn't know it's him nowadays, because he looks completely different now.
26:14Looks very different now. Again, just like Mark Aiden Gray, who played Choi. And he was also in the TV miniseries, The Lost World, with Paul Goddard, who plays Agent Brown. I just know The Lost World miniseries with the guy from Roger Rabbit. Oh, yeah? Yeah. And he recently got into directing documentaries. Oh. Julian Arahania. That's about it. He's Maori, isn't he? From New Zealand. Yeah. I'm looking at his facial features, and I never noticed that. I was a child. A dumb child. You were but a child. Cool. Look at Trinity. Trinity looks super bored in one of these shots. I just wanted to say, like, he's sitting down.
26:56Morpheus tells him to take a seat. And he's being put on these plugs. Do we want to talk about how this works or no? Let's try. It goes into more development later on. But she puts the heart monitor on him, I guess. I think that's just a... I don't think that's important. I think they're basically just doing that because they're just checking his vital signs and stuff like that, just to make sure he's healthy enough to be... But I like... So it's really cute when he's like, you did all this? And she's like, oh, thank you for reminding me. That confused me my entire life. Because Neo said, you did all this? To Trinity. And I thought, wow, Trinity did all this? She set this whole room up.
27:37She made the codes for the tracing programs. Oh, man. Wow. And Trinity's like, mm-hmm. Because if she can hack the IRS debase, then come on. She can make a phone dialer, of course. Yeah. The funny thing is that looking at this right now from a perspective of an adult, you can see how much of it just like, this is a cool blinking thing. Put it in here. Put the stuff on him and make the phone dial. But when we were kids, we did the exact same thing in our Matrix movies. I mean, for God's sake, we use a huge mixer, like an audio mixer. Oh, yeah, yeah. As for technology. On that False Swipe episode that we talked about back... Yeah. And then we use highlighters that had like a spacey look to them.
28:21And they look cool. Oh, no. The hard... They look like... Yeah, they look like... The highlighters had liquid... Test tubes. Had liquid... Like cyber test tubes. And they had liquid coloring. Yeah. Yeah. For highlighters, right? And we made that up to be alien blood. Yeah. And we used that, you know, like as a prop. And back then that would seem, oh, this is so obvious to us. But, you know, but it's okay because we don't have budget and everything. But, you know, the professionals in Matrix, they would do... They would do... Maybe for you, Tim. But for me, when I was a kid, Tim, I really undermined the intelligence of my audience. And I pretended... And I thought... I was convinced. And I thought that no one's going to notice. We're going to use this big audio... Oh, you thought you tricked them.
29:02Was it? Soundboard. Yes. And I thought people are going to be like, wow, that's so cool. High tech. Yeah. And just like... I thought, you know, I thought, hey, this is good enough, you know? So, Tim... The markers. The markers are alien. You're already conscious of how people would perceive this. And I was just thinking, nah, they'll be fooled. They'll think there's real alien blood. And they'll say, how did you get this alien blood? Some actually highlights. Highlighters. Wow. Wow. Perfect. But, you know, they are actors and they are selling all this equipment. Like, it's serious business. Of course. They're paying for it. But I think it's cool. The aesthetic is cool. Oh, it's definitely cool. Because imagine it would be super boring if he's walking in the room and is like, Neo. And it's like, that would be like a very... It's like a blank room.
29:42Yeah, it's like a blank room. It's like... Or do you know what the classic... We'll switch the light off, Neo. And then... Oh, my goodness. It's so boring. No, the most boring would be this. Ready? Takes the red pill and then... And then he goes, you're getting very sleepy. And it's like... Like the frame wiggles. Yeah. And then Neo goes, what's happening? I was... And he fades out. Faints and makes up in the... Or fades out like Marty McFly. I've got even a worse one. Imagine this. It's like, he takes the pill. He drinks it. And then you have the... You have the wide shot of them sitting there. And then you have the close-up of Morpheus. You know, like the Cheshire cat laughing. Oh, no. And then lightning. And then it goes back to the wide shot. Neo's not there anymore.
30:24So horrendous. That would be amazing. Or it's just his clothes deflated. Like Obi-Wan. The Matrix 4 is going in full swing. Or you could do like... You could do like... The chairs start floating and stuff. What's happening? You know, like everything gets weird. It's psychedelic. And he goes, be what? Be real? Yeah. And then Morpheus turns into like a cat or something. Yeah. And then it's like... Are you ready for the truth? Oh, and then Neo jumps out the window and he's flying or something. Oh, like the beginning of six and a half. Six and a half? Eight and a half. Eight and a half. The prequel. Six and a half. Sorry. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Eight and a half. So that was... What happens? I think that's pretty much it for this. There's some goggles. We're almost there.
31:04We're almost out. The goggles are definitely the weirdest one. Can you believe it's been 30 minutes? It's 30 minutes. Half an hour until you get out of the Matrix. I got a question still before we end this. What the hell does Cypher give Morpheus? Phone. A phone? Because he's going to call Tank. Where you could just use... Oh, that's right. That's right. That's right. So hard lines are just used for... I'm confused. Yeah, hard lines are just used for getting out of the Matrix. But cell phones are... Cell phones are... Security. You can communicate with people outside the Matrix. Yeah, there's secure things you can communicate with. Also behind... Behind... Trinity and Neo, there's another monitor. It's a flat screen monitor with like auxiliary... Whatever the... Ooh, look at that. Little plugs. This is what you use on sets as well to monitor the cameras.
31:45Oh, more set stuff. So they're just like basically just... Yeah, why not? See, they're doing exactly what I thought when I was a kid. And I was like, no one's going to notice. Yeah, no one's going to notice. No one's going to notice all this film equipment. And here we are talking about it. And here we are talking about it. And I'm like, no one's going to notice that those are highlighters, even though they clearly are. No, no, no. They're test tubes. Alien blood. And yeah. Well, the thing is, what did aliens have to do with our film anyway? The Matrix aliens. Don't you know? Yeah, seriously. What did the aliens have to do? I never thought about that. Because like for me, I thought it was like a metaphysic... Yeah, I thought it was like sci-fi things being put into different programs. Like anything is possible. So there's aliens. Get more secrets revealed from Phil. Actually, yeah. But actually, we keep finding out... I really hope someone watches this.
32:27Because it's on Vimeo, I think. I hope someone watches this. Next thing you'll tell me is like, there's like a whole like plot behind the plot. That's like a meta narrative. Probably all the movies are connected. Yeah, all the movies are connected. We found it. We put them, stitch them all together. There's a storyline. It's Phil's cinematic universe. Yeah, I did the cinematic universe before anyone else. And all this by just telling us, okay, ready? Say this line. Go. Cut. Done. Say this line. Secret genius. That's what's going to happen, man. In the next 10 years, we'll find out more scenes. You just have to play them all in a specific order. And then you're like, what? Yeah, like 2, 7, 3, 1. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. And then we'll have... And then it'll be in the American Film Registry. Oh, yeah. In 2025. And then people will watch it and go, what is this?
33:07The famous line. Oh, look what old Papa found. I'll be in there. Okay, no one gets this joke, but that's what Tim ad-libbed when we were recording some of the lines and some of the scenes in the False Swipe episode that Tim was featured in. Well, because I think... And he goes, look what old Papa found. Well, I think that Phil... With his leather jacket and his sunglasses. I think I was filming or something. Yeah, you... If two of us were in the scene, one of us had to be filming. That's how it goes. And you... I think none of us... I think neither you or me expected Tim to do any ad-lib. I think I was expecting Tim to give you the markers. But then... No, Tim actually... Oh, Papa found. You know what's funny? Watching those old movies, I just...
33:48I'm incredibly reminded of Tommy Wiseau because... The fact that he... There's a lot of really weird phrases or figures of speech he uses in the room. Oh, yeah. It makes no sense. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it was this whole big Reddit post of somebody figuring out that he's probably from Poland. And then they give examples of the original sayings in Polish where they make sense because they're actual idioms. But, you know, like, keep your stupid pockets... He's translating them word for word. Yeah, exactly. You know... So, keep your stupid comments in your pocket? Yeah, that's an actual phrase in Polish. Oh, man. That makes so much sense now. Of course he's Polish. It makes sense because he just translated them. Because he's translating them. It's funny, like, in our movies, when I was a kid, I didn't speak English that well.
34:31And, you know, I tried to make cool stuff. And there's a lot of those idioms that I translated for myself and I was just watching. It's like, what is this little Tommy Wiseau child trying to be cool? Look what old... Well, there was actually a better after that than amazing... Not better, but than equal... Of equal greatness. Phil comes in and goes, talking about the pen, the marker. It's like, oh, that's what I thought. I'm the main character, by the way. And I have sunglasses and I never take them off. And I have a trench coat. What are you going to name these three markers? And what are the substance? Mercury. Yeah, yeah. What was it? It was... Like titanium. Yeah, titanium. Uranus. Titanium, Uranus, and Jupiter. But my favorite is, you go like this. Titanium, Uranus, which doesn't exist.
35:11None of these are all. None of these are actual elements. And then titanium, Uranus, and then you stop a little bit trying to think of the last one. And you're like, Jupiter. You know what this means? Alien blood. That's what he said. Yeah. And then Tim goes, we could put a test. No. I can guess. And then he says, and then I say, we're toast. It's like, it's supposed to give you like a, we're commenting on this movie that no one's going to watch. But I love that you are the main character that's always like cool. But I'm always saying like, we're toast. I know, but you're calm, cool, like we're toast. Yeah. Yeah, I know. That's what the Matrix did in fact on us. That doesn't make a very good protagonist. It didn't. Huh? Yeah. I'm just saying that this is the effect that the Matrix had on us.
35:53Everything had to be cool. Of course. Everything had to be said very witty, but not, you know, modern witty when it's funny. It's witty, but cool. Very cool. Yeah. Everyone's going to be cool. What they're saying is not important. How they're saying it. And how their sunglasses look. That's the whole point. Yeah. That's the key. That's the key. What they're saying is not important, but how they say it. That's. That's the critical. That's the critical thing about all our movies. That's all we got from the Matrix. You know. Just. Yeah. Say whatever as long as you can go. Yeah. As long as it sounds cool. We put it in. Put it in. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. And then of course, like a couple of dialogue, like filler dialogue, who cares about that crap? And then fight scene. Just slapping like.
36:34Fight scene is important. Okay. Guys. Thank you. If you want, look for false wipe and you might find something on the internet. Maybe. Maybe. There's at least the first episode in there. There's not some really weird fetish porn. That's like. Yeah. I hope that's not the case. Oh, it's true. That'd be bad. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Misdirecting people. It's supposed to be little children and sunglasses. If it's not that, run away. Whatever it is. Yes. Run away. Okay. So thank you for on that note. On that note, we will finish this episode. We're getting ready to get out of the Matrix. So we hope to get some guests. Yeah. We're our guests. We were talking about these guests. I need to put the calendar onto the page. Philip. Why don't you make the calendar? Why don't you share it publicly? I need to share it. Can you do that? I need to share the calendar.
