I am Tim and I agree with you. Did you guys know that Morpheus's glasses are only held by the brim of his nose? The brim of his nose? No. That's amazing. That is a good one. Isn't that? There's no of the sidey bits. There's no of the little weird things that go over your ears. There are no sidey bits. Sidey bits. No. Nothing. None of that. The question is, how did they do that, by the way, on the set and things? Oh, he just puts it on. Clips it on. It hurts. He must not. He can't do head bobbing. Yeah, that's what I'm always... It'd be really stable.

1:21I'm very interested to see how he's not able to do those head bobs because it would fly off, I think. Do you think maybe that's why his character is so monumentally, you know, standing, walking around? He's just afraid all the time of his glasses falling? Neo, these glasses, they actually help for my posture. The favorite look of Morpheus' glasses is, if you will indulge me, in the construct, where it's like a matte finish. Oh, that's just because he's reflecting the white. I know. That's cool. Philip, tell us what happens in minute 28. In minute 28, we'll come back to Morpheus. Neo knows what Morpheus is talking about. The Matrix. Neo wants to know what it is, so Morpheus gives him the lowdown.

2:05The Matrix is everywhere. All around us. The world that has been pulled over our eyes to blind us from the truth. The truth that Neo is a slave. Like everyone else, he was born into a prison that he cannot smell or taste or touch. And that's where our minute ends. I want to say things. Right? All right, go for it. Is the Matrix the movie which has the most mentions of the title in it? You say the Matrix a lot. Yeah. Well, Back to the Future, we just watched those three films like a week ago. Twice, because we watched it with commentary and so on. They say Back to the Future quite a lot. Oh, do they? A couple of times, but I wouldn't say as much as the Matrix.

2:47Yes, yes. Back to the Future. We're going Back to the Future. I don't know. But the Matrix is quite... Come on, Doc. Let's go. Can you think of any other movie? We've got to go back. Where? Back to the Future. True, true. Lord of the Rings has all the titles. What about Terminator? Do they say Terminator a lot? Oh, man. Oh, yes, they do. Dude, there's a whole montage, someone cut together, of characters saying the movie titles in the movie. The most mentioned movie title in a movie. I just always remember that. I think it's Blade. Family guy. Blade. Oh, because the name. It's his name. That is true. So that's basically, if you think about any movie with the name and title, it's over. Oh, by the way, it's thundering outside like madness. But I'm not afraid like Philip.

3:29It's just quiet. Are you not afraid? Well, thankfully, we don't have anything. I think at least I'm afraid for you guys of Thunderstorms. Scary stuff. Why? But the other thing I wanted to say is let's play a little game, right? So you have to explain, you know the Matrix is real and you're inside the Matrix and you're trying to explain to your mom what the Matrix is. I read some good stuff about this scene. I can't believe I didn't do research. Because how do you approach this? Because Morpheus obviously goes on his little poetic way, you know. He could be a bit straightforward, but he goes, he's teasing. Like Neo is like already leaning into Morpheus.

4:10He wants to know, what, what, what, what? I eat Captain Crunch and this is Matrix. What is it? So how would you guys explain? How would I explain the Matrix to Neo or someone like Neo? Oh yeah, just anyone. Like your best friend or someone who you really want them to get it and you can unplug them. You just want to. Okay, well, Morpheus in this scene, he actually answers the question to Neo. He literally explains the whole thing, but he's going on to being super poetic and vague about it. You know what's funny? I actually, on my notes I wrote, how would you do it differently? Yeah, that's what that's next. So Tim said the same thing. Without any notes. Ha! Okay, so I would be like, Neo, do you know you're in a simulation right now?

4:53Neo. It's a simulation for your mind being controlled by machines. Go on, Philip, it's okay. We're listening. Right now we're inside a computer program. Neo? Would you believe me? It was funny, he said, Neo? It's like, Neo, don't walk out the door, Neo. Neo, close that door. Please? No, okay. I'll start over again. Here. Okay, I'll get you another glass of water. Just sit down, Neo. No, listen to me. Okay. Jacob, how would you go about it? Yes, if I was explaining it, I would probably be prone to do Morpheus stuff as well. I would speak in metaphor. Until they start questioning, like, are you starting with something real?

5:34Yes, I am. Well, actually, you know what? It's pretty difficult because I'm starting to talk about being in a simulation, and Neo would be like, what? Well, basically, this is how I start. I would say, okay, Neo, listen. Have you heard of the simulation theory? I would say, have you heard of the problems, the philosophical problems of how do we know we're not living in a simulation? I would start there. I would say, what if I told you it's not just a philosophical problem? What if I told you it's an actual, well, it is an actual problem, but what if I told you it's real? It's not a theory, but it's actually a fact. And he would go, we are living in a program, and you believe you're seeing the world it is, but you're actually looking at impulses being fed into your brain, and you are not even here. You are in a plant. Plugged in. You are not even here.

6:15That's what I would say. And he would say, I can take you there, but once you're unplugged, there's no going back. Well, you're plugging what? My computer. I have lots of hard notes. But here's the thing. It's a funny thing that Morpheus goes about saying what the matrix is as all the normal and mundane things. I would probably go and, not pinpoint, pull out the crazy things. It's like, oh, do you remember your mouth being stuck together? Or do you remember me cacking into your computer? You know, how did I? Cacking into your computer. Cacking. I cacking. Or like, he would go, did you ever see a deja vu?

6:57Did you see it? These are all glitches. This world is not perfect. It is not real. And I will show you. I will build my own race of atopic supermen. That will conquer the world. And then you'll go, you're crazy. We must pull the string. You're a madman. Pull the string. Machine pull the string. Mistakes made. Our story must be told. So what I like about this whole thing is that, see now we're getting into some heavy, you know, heavy philosophical stuff in the movie. This is why we need guests. That we can't. Yes. I would love to have someone explain it well, not me.

7:41But basically, to put it simply, so far in the movie, I would say there are two big philosophical parallels, classical philosophical parallels. We have Plato's Cave, which we've talked about before. Yes. Which is the entire idea is that Plato's Cave is essentially an illustration of people being fed, like in the Matrix, false information, looking at the shadows, but they think that's the reality. Yeah. Right? And Plato is saying, no, no, no, no. There's actually a real reality out there. His theory is a little more complicated. But basically, the whole story is Neo escaping the cave. That's one. Can you give us a little bit more insight on the cave?

8:23The cave? Yes. What's this in reference to as far as Plato? So, this comes from, I believe, Plato's The Republic, if you've heard of that book. Okay. And essentially, the entire idea is that Plato believed in, that we're living in a shadow world. And so, this gets a little metaphysical. But imagine that we think of something. Let's say we think of a book, right? And Plato thought that this book is actually, its properties, it means, let's say, its shape, its color, whatever. Everything we think of that constitutes a book, Plato thought it takes part in the form of the book, capital form.

9:04So, that means an ideal form of that book. Somewhere outside this realm of reality, there's a true reality, which is the world of the forms. And the forms would be ideal paradigms of certain things. So, an ideal human, the perfect human. We don't see the perfect human in our lives. We only see people who are partaking in the form of the human. Does that make sense? I'm a bit lost here. So, it's basically... So, imagine like this. Imagine you think of a horse, right? Yeah. Okay. We're going from a book to a horse. But it doesn't matter. It could be any example. So, think of a horse. A horse has what?

9:44Four legs. We're beating a dead book. Yeah. A certain shape of a... Whatever. Just think of the properties of a horse. Okay. But it's a pervy horse. No. Yeah. Plato would say that it's just a bit of shadow. Yeah. It's corrupted. It's just a shadow. It's just... It's a horse. It's a particular. Right? Okay. It's a particular example. There's many horses, right? There's white horses. There's work horses. There's stallions. These are all different kinds of horses. Okay. But all of them share something in common. What is that? I have a question. I have a question. Yes. I see what you mean. Is this related at all to... It is. ...Decker's dreams in Blade Runner? Remind me. But it's a unicorn. Yeah. But it's a horse. What did you say? They're all part of the hoarseness. Yeah.

10:24They have hoarseness as well. I don't think the horse is relevant. I don't know. Remind me. Just chose the horse. Decker has a dream in Blade Runner. Yeah. And it's actually footage taken from Legend, which is what he filmed, what literally Scott filmed with Tom Cruise. I was going to say with Evangelius. Well, I filmed it with... And Tim Curry. I think Tim Curry is the Satan character. He looks amazing, by the way. Okay. He looks incredible. Or was that Dungeon Mask? No, it's Legend. I think it's Legend. And when he's dreaming that, that's an inserted scene for later cuts, like the director's cut, which kind of confirms because every android, every replicant has an implanted memory of

11:10unicorns. Unicorns. Or unicorns. I don't know. I think Aristotle liked horses. He talked a lot about horses. But anyway, Plato... Before we go back to Plato, before we go back to Plato, I want to know, why is it a unicorn? Shouldn't it be a sheep? Yeah. Electric sheep, right? Yeah. Why is it like electric sheep going... I am a sheep. Well, it would be great if they filmed it in slow motion. I haven't seen it in such a long time. So graceful. A unicorn sheep with a little horn going... Okay. Go back to Plato. So anyway, so they all share... Perfect horse. All these particular horses share in the universal of horse-ness.

11:53And this horse-ness is perfect. According to Plato. So there's like the... Okay, Plato. An ideal. Okay. And it's sort of out of this normal realm. It's sort of like... Singulaterally, the perfect horse. Yes. And in the other realm he lives in, and does he have like a normal life? It's a unicorn. Or he just stands there as like a form and... I don't know. He never talks about it. These horses... Okay, I guess. It's more of... Think of it more like maybe something more religious, something more spiritual, something a little bit transcendent, right? Okay. Okay. So there's a world of perfect paradigms out there. Indeed. We don't live in that world. No. But it's somewhere out there. But we see shadows. We see these particulars. Yeah. Horses. The first matrix. Unicorns. People. The matrix. The first matrix. Oh, would that be... Yeah, that'd be like a perfect matrix, I guess, as well.

12:34It's complicated. But anyway... So in programming, you have a class, and then you have objects. Yes. And you have IDs. These horses are just like sort of instances of this class, I see. Correct. Yeah. Correct. Similar. I would make sure to say that their properties partake in hoarseness. That's how it would be. Wow. Anyway, let's get to the... Yeah, this is complicated. Let's get to the cave. So why is this important? It's important because the people who are stuck in the cave... Already. ...who have been born in the cave, yeah, they don't know any better. They're chained, looking at these shadows being projected... ...onto the wall of some kind of reality. But it's not the true reality. Why? Because above the cave is the real world.

13:17Right. And so the whole parallel is sort of like these guys are just seeing the particulars. They're not aware of the universals. This reminds me of the beginning of Tengen, Topa, Gurren, Lagan. Is it similar? Yeah. Ah, maybe it's also a parallel. It's a good show, by the way. And one... I have to see that with you one time. It's great. And one of these guys in the cave gets freed. And he leaves, and he goes up to the surface. And he's introduced to... He's basically... Meal. I think Plato uses this Greek term of recalling. Because Plato thought that we actually were sort of perfect beings in a sense. And we lost our memories when we were born. It's complicated. But anyway, the whole point is that he gets up there.

13:57And he goes, wow. He's like, I'm introduced to the real world. Parallel to the Matrix, right? It's waking up. Yeah, yeah. It's going, ooh, the real world is here, and this is all a lie. What's interesting in the story is that this guy who leaves... Here's another parallel with Matrix. He doesn't stay up there and indulge in the world selfishly. He comes back to tell his friends in the cave about the real world. But these guys in the cave are like, no, you're lying, man. You're stupid. So Locke is the guy... Commander Locke is the guy who just goes up there and stays there because he's a jerk. Really? No, I'm just making this up. Could be. But Morpheus is this dude. Morpheus is a good example of coming back. You're right. He's coming back saying, I'm going to free my fellow beings because I've seen I've been unplugged. And I want them to reap the bounty.

14:38Hey, we got Alien Covenant. We should watch it. We should watch it. And I had to realize it. It was terrible. I kind of... Emma's watching it. I kind of glance and I just like... It's ridiculous how much it doesn't make any sense. Good. I can't wait to see that. It looks nice, as all Ridley Scott movies look nice. There's always little particles blowing about and little smoke and things. Why does Ridley Scott just keep making Alien? I love smoke. I love smoke. Shouldn't you be doing different things? I love smoke. I just love it. But the thing is that I remember I kind of asked Emma like, wait, wait. So this is even supposed to now... We had Prometheus and then we have Cominant and I was under the impression that Prometheus

15:19was supposed to connect to some Alien stuff, but then it kind of didn't at all. And then, okay, Covenant comes and it's like, oh, it was told, oh, this is Alien now and it will be connected even more to a story. It actually disconnects more. Oh, I wanted to... You're ruining the movie. I didn't get to see it yet. Trust me, trust me. I wasn't listening, so I didn't hear it. Don't worry. I'm telling you the information you will figure out in like two seconds. I'm not expecting anything big because I know that it's been, you know, I've heard that it wasn't very good, but I don't... Spoilers to anyone listening. Sorry. I didn't spoil anything. I'm just saying that it's frustratingly... We should put a warning. Spoiler warning before that. Like, why is this happening? Where is this going?

16:00Shout out to the Alien Minute again. I want them to come over here because they are amazing people and they say such wise things. We should be like, come over here now. Yes, and good luck to them whenever they get to Alien Covenant, which will be... Probably will be the future of Prometheus by that time. How many... Here's the thing. I didn't... I said it on the other podcast so I could say it here. I'm not a fan of any of the sequel movies. I appreciate the second one. I appreciate that it's different and it's another angle. I just don't like it. Wow. You don't like it. That's very strong. That is strong. I never connected with that one. It's not even just like passable. Like, that's a pretty fun action movie. Because I think it's great. I don't... No, it's great. I just don't like it. You know what I mean? Wait, wait, wait, wait. It's a good movie. I just...

16:41I don't personally like it. Oh, but you're not drawn to... I'm not connecting with it. I love the... I appreciate the fact that they went different and did something different. But it's not your cup of tea. The world. No, I just love the first one too much. So that's like me and Quentin Tarantino films. It's like, I know that it's a good movie, but I don't really like it. Yeah, you don't connect with it at all. That makes sense. That makes a lot of sense. The first one is like the most perfect thing that, you know, ever existed. If I saw it before Matrix, I might have, you know, that might have been the one. You know what I mean? It's just... Oh, that movie's so good. So we... Okay, can I see... Why don't they freeze him? You will hate... You will hate the Covenant, how much they use that stupid flute theme.

17:24Every time. Anything's happening. I don't know what he's talking about. We'll see. We'll see. You know, in Alien, number one. You mean... Do I have a look? Yes. Yes. It returns. A hundred times. I think this is the first big parallel is like we talked about Plato's Cave. So I think it makes sense, right? The Plato's Cave parallel? Yes. Yes. It's a classical thing. Yeah, it perfectly makes sense with this thing. And it's interesting because I think that... I don't know how many other movies... There are probably more movies that do this parallel, but what's interesting is The Matrix actually the entire movie is, you could say, is the parallel to that.

18:07It is. And the second, I think, overarching parallel is, of course, the classic question of are we in a simulation? And that's also another classic philosophical problem, which is under the branch of what's called epistemology, which means the philosophy of knowledge. How do we know what we know? And that's another problem in there. And that's basically, you know, the brain's in the vat theory. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's it. The Matrix is just a pure copy. The one's in the Ministry of Magic, where in, you know, Harry Potter is running from the... And his friends are running from the Death Eaters. And it's at the end of the book.

18:48Okay. And Ron falls into this vat of brains. Is that a reference probably to that? I don't know. Anyway, the whole point is just... I'm just putting as many references as I can. Can we at all know if we're in a simulation or not? And the funny thing is, that's a true problem. That's a real philosophical problem. There is no answer. And it's very possible. Yeah. I don't know. I'm always... I always find it so cringy. Anyway. When people bring that up, like, you know, like, you know, oh, you know, like, what if we're in a simulated reality? We should be able to hack different... But it's true. I think the question is, you know, nature. But it's not necessarily... We can make that... Then we can make that perpetual motion. That's right. What's it called? Perpetual water.

19:29But I think the idea is also not just talking about a simulation, but just asking ourselves, how much can we know, you know, as humans about the world? I think the difference between questioning reality as in of your, you know, your experience as a person and your consciousness is different than the classical. I mean, people just saying, as in the case of Matrix, we are in a virtual reality of some sinister corporation or person controlling us. And I just find that ridiculous. It's impossible. There's no... Well, I wouldn't rule it out, but I would agree that it seems improbable.

20:09Oh, yeah. I mean, I don't know. It would be something you would probably... I don't know. I don't know. It seems a bit too much of a stretch for me. It seems like it's quite a large stretch. It's a huge stretch. That's what I'm saying. I'm saying I'm leaving that little, like, tiny percentage that it's not... Open. Impossible. Yeah. But I would agree that I think either way you look at it, it's highly unlikely. Yeah, but the Matrix, anyway... But I'm just saying what I like in the Matrix is that that whole... Well, question, I think, like I said, delves deeper into just general questions of reality. I don't think the Matrix, the movie, was made to talk about that, just that stupid theory of the simulation. I think they just set it up that way so we can further question, you know, the nature

20:50of reality in general. That's sort of the idea behind it. Yes. That's why it's all there. That's why it's all there, exactly. Yeah. Anyway... I mean, after a couple of joints down, you're like sitting... Dude. A couple of joints. Yep, yep. It's the... Whoa, dude. Whoa. Whoa. I feel like I'm in the Matrix right now, man. Anyway, so those, I would say, we're getting now plunged into these two big conundrums. Anyway, what else do we have about this? Well, let's go into the scene. Okay, let's go back to the scene. Just in a filmmaking basis, I just wanted to say that Neo staring at... Neo staring at Morpheus, he's like eager. He looks like he's trying to learn and get all this information in. And I have to give credit to Keanu. He does the best acting here because he's really doing an amazing job showing a man who is not only scared out of his mind, but is very interested as well.

21:39Look at him. He's at the edge of his seat. And I think this is amazing how he acts so well compared to Johnny Mnonek or... I know. ...Bill and Ted or anything else he was in. And it's just so nice and subtle. Like when you look at this minute in particular, he's just listening. And the way he performs this is just... It's mind-blowing. Whoa, dude. It's just ridiculous. And Morpheus is very scary, of course, and we said. And Neo leans in and then Morpheus also leans in as well. Yeah, that's true. I like that too. And, you know, the lighting setup is beautiful. And there's just one more thing we can do and that's go to 1996 and read some of the alternate mess dialogue.

22:20Let's go to 1996. The good old 1996. So 1996, most of it is pretty much the same. Just saying. But there's a few little things that were changed. Some lines that were changed with Morpheus. So let's just say that it's room 1313. Whatever that means. I don't know. 1313. Neo-Trinity, Neo-Trinity. Maybe unlucky, unlucky. Across the room, a dark figure stares out the tall windows veiled with decaying lace. He turns and his smile lights up the room. And then I bet a gaffer's like, so if you want this to light up, how are we going to do that? Do you want black light? Do you want to physically light up the room?

23:02I want to put some lights in his mouth. Okay, I see. I'll just write that down. No, okay. So he says, he does the same stuff. He doesn't say the honor is mine in this one. Okay. So when Neo says it's an honor, he just goes, please come sit. And then he nods to Trinity. Oh. And then Morpheus says, thank you, Trinity. Thank you, Madonna. That would be all Trinity. Oh, yeah. And then Trinity bows her head sharply and exits through a door to the adjacent room. Oh, that's sort of like a... Minion. Like what? Maybe like a Buddhist thing? The cracked burgundy leather chairs are still there. And then he says the Alice in Wonderland thing. And then... No, you should have said, Neo, would you like anything to drink? We have Coke. Actually, we have quite frankly of anything you would ever want.

23:42We have water on the table there. Drink it. Yes. It's good for you. Okay, go on. He says like, this is not far from the truth, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Can you tell me, Neo, why you are here? And Neo says, you're Morpheus. You're a legend. Most hackers would die to meet you. And then Morpheus says, yes, thank you. But I think we both know there is more to it than that. Do you believe in fate, Neo? And Neo says, no, because I don't control my own life. And then he says, and then Morpheus says, let me tell you why you are here. You are here because you have the gift.

24:24What gift? I've watched you, Neo. You do not use a computer like a tool. You use it like it was part of yourself. No. What you can do inside a computer is not normal. I know. I've seen it. Well. What you do is magic. Ooh. And Neo shrugs. Not magic. But it is, Neo. It is. How else would you describe what has been happening to you? He leans forward. We are trained in this world to accept only what is rational and logical. Have you ever wondered why? Neo shakes his head. As children, we do not separate the possible from the impossible, which is why the younger

25:08a mind is, the easier it is to free, while a mind like yours can be very difficult. Free from what? From the Matrix. Not bad. That's a pretty good one. That's good. Yeah. Those are some weird parts about the computer. Magic. Spying on Neo typing. But other than that, it's pretty good. Neo locks. Yeah. That's about it. I mean, we can go do this later. I see how that kind of developed. They kind of switched around the placement of that. Yeah. Oh, yeah. The age thing. More magic. Yeah. So I like that magic. I love that. You are a wizard, Neo. Neo. Oh, yeah. It is, Neo. It is. Yes, it is. I think that's about it.

25:48That's our talk. He just talks about the Matrix, and he talks about going to church, paying his taxes. That's right. I love that part. I think it's unexpected, because he goes through these mundane, not mundane, but sort of like, when you go to church. I'm not religious. When you go to church. I don't believe in you, God. Church! When you go to church, Neo! Neo, you're breaking up my poem. Fine. When you go to the super. And then Cypher comes out and goes, just go with it. Just say yes. Yeah, just say yes. He likes this part. Cypher's in a fireplace, just whispering to Morpheus. When you go to church. Line! For now. Where do we end this part where he goes, what's the last line in this clip, in this minute

26:31of ours? A prison you cannot smell or taste or touch. Oh yes, classic. Classic. I think this scene speaks for itself, because it's magical when you hear it. He's telling us. He's telling us what's going on. And I remember when I was a kid, I was just quite like, what's going to happen? I don't know. What is he talking about? I'm in prison. What? The dialogue in this scene is self-contained, and that's where the magic is. I don't think we can say anything to enhance that, unfortunately. Except that alien and aliens are both just as good as you do. You shut your dirty mouth. I don't want to see some raided, roided marines running around shooting millions of- No, it's true. You know what? As I got-

27:12They have sharps and knives. I have to say, yeah, we have sharp sticks and knives. Look, I would love it if it wasn't connected. Maybe if I watch it next time, I would be like, oh, it's okay. Well, Tim, I have to say, I used to think that aliens and alien were both equal, but then when I got older, I tend to like watching alien more. The first one. I like it. Well, it's funny, because if you look at alien 2, it's actually like, forgive me for saying it's not in a negative sense, but it's much more of like a raggedy version. Like it's very- I don't like the look of it. It's very like clunky. Yeah. It's very clunky and like sort of, it's like borderline, almost like B-movie in some of the looks of it. Yeah, yeah. Whereas alien is like a masterpiece of visual- Alien looks so beautiful.

27:53Yeah. Yeah. And if you thought that, you know, alien covenant is not connected to alien, it is absolutely not connected to alien to whatsoever. I can't wait to see this. Man, what's the point?
