0:00Welcome to the Matrix Minute! Um, I'm Phil, and I want Neo's trench coat, and I want his bishop coat as well. That was a good one. I'm Jake, and that's how that covers it. Yeah, and I'm Tim, and I'll steal your coat later. And walk the streets with a fedora on my hat, and be cool. And be cool! Buy one of those metal, like, what's that brand called? The boots that Neo has later on. Oh, I don't know. It's a Spanish company. I'll tell you. No, it's not the boots he had, but I definitely, there's a Spanish company that does boots like that, that are like for metal men and women. Men made out of metal.

0:40Metal man. The Goths with the big platforms. Metal man. You should look it up, because I have no clue. I'm going to look it up now. We used to sell them in the dog shop. Tree. Anyway, this is Minute 22. And on Minute 22, this is what happens. The bug digs deep into Neo's skin. Neo panics even more. But he wakes up. In bed. Was it all a dream? It was a dark and stormy night. The phone rings. It's Morpheus. He tells them that they got to him first, and says that he's been looking for him his entire life, but not before telling Neo that he used the one.

1:26And that's how it ends. The whole movie ends there. To be continued. Tim? We're all here. Oh, okay. Well, the last... I'm here. I'm looking at boots. I'm waiting for the boot. Let's see the boots. Sorry. The beginning of the shot is a close-up of the thing digging into his belly button again. Those are practical. You can tell that, obviously. Let me see. Oh, wow. You're right. Yeah. As it's drilling into his stomach, it's... How'd they do that? It's a whole prosthetic torso made for the scene, specifically. So, the whole belly is fake. That looks great. Yeah, it's good. Super real. It gets even better later on. It's pretty good. That's a good-looking shot. Yeah. Why am I looking at these boots? The funny thing, I realize that a lot of brands make the same kind of style of boots.

2:10Well, I mean, that's pretty understandable now. Yeah, I just thought it was very specific for that one brand we had that they made these. But this boot you sent looks nothing like Neo's. It's true. I thought it was that. I remember I walked into the store that I worked in and they had all these metal boots. I was like, these are like Neo's. And then I watched me and said, wait, these are nothing like Neo's. Because, yeah, Neo's boots have those kind of... Those... Ridges. The tips have like ridges. The steel toe tip. It's for workers. So hammers don't hit their little precious finger. Is that really why they still feel? Yeah, that's why you have steel toes. But then skinheads use them to smash. And also for like hiking. When you're hiking and you don't want to, you know... But why is it only the toes though? Because the toes are the most sensitive. Yeah. Why don't you have to try to steal boots?

2:52Because it will be heavy and you will feel like you're walking. They'll be like the ones in, you know, Legend of Zelda where you put them on. Dunk, dunk. Yeah. Okay, so Neo wakes up again. Mm-hmm. As pointed out by future guest Patrick Willems in his great video. Mm-hmm. This was also a really great fake out because, you know, when I was a kid and I was watching this, I immediately thought, oh, it's a dream, right? Back in his apartment. Yes. That's so used in movies like so many times. The fake, the false awakening. Oh, we talked about this before. I'm just letting us know. We did? We did? Yes, we did. Because he did already wake up, didn't he? No, we were just talking about it like in the future. We're going to talk about it. We are wise men. But I'm saying we're doing that.

3:32I'm saying again because it's another waking up. Neo just keeps waking up all the time. We talked about this. This is one of the elements in the film to fake out. We're back in another waking up scene. So he's waking up and I mentioned it. The phone rings immediately. So he's like, oh, it's fine. Who is it? Everything's good. Who is it? Morpheus. Always joy. Is that rain in the background fake? It's 100% fake. There is no reason to be shooting something and waiting for the rain. We bring the rain to us. One guy with a hose outside on the set. Also, did you guys know that when he wakes up, I was very confused before watching this

4:14a long time ago and I thought, why does his room now look like an army barrack? It's like bendy. You see the walls? You mean the roof? The sort of the attic? Like, see the walls sort of angled. Yeah. I was confused. He's like, where is he living now? It's like, this is crappier than his last room. But clearly it's just a different angle. But you know what? Right when he wakes up, this whole minute, it's just two shots. Oh. He wakes up. That is so strange. It's never cut from him, this sort of wide angle close up of him talking on the phone. It never cuts to anything else. There's no like tracking Michael Bay shot of 360. No, it should have cut back to the bug. The bug drilling through his life.

4:56No, it should be like a crossfade to that time that just happened. He's like remembering. Oh, yeah. Oh, we had to remind the audience. Of course. Oh, no. Like, no. The flash to white. Yes. You know, like in horror movies. He's like, he could be talking to Morphe and saying, Morphe's, I had a dream. And it cuts back. Essentially, this podcast is how to make the Matrix worse. Like in Spider-Man where Norman was like when Harry finds Norman, you know, like asleep on the floor. And then it's like, where were you last night? Last night I was. Exactly. What did you say, Tim? Shout out to Spider-Man Minute. Yeah. No, I'm just saying that this podcast has basically turned into how to make the Matrix worse in Morphe.

5:36Yes. Ideas by Tim, Phil, and Jake. So I just, next time we're going to do the episode, I'll just be like, welcome to how to make the Matrix worse. But we have some real things that happen that aren't bad. Morpheus picks up the phone. No, Neo picks up the phone talking to Morpheus. All one shot. Again, Morpheus only calls you. Yeah, Morpheus is his only friend at the moment. But Trinity is a potential future girlfriend for Neo. Did she call him? No, no. She just hacked into his computer because she's a weirdo. Yeah, but remember they had that great conversation about the ISD base. Yeah, yeah. That was the perfect relationship building stuff. Anyway, Morpheus tells Neo just straight up. He's like, you're the one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Before we get into the talk with Morpheus, that strange black thing with numbers on it

6:21that he picks up for anyone who's... It's called a phone. Yeah, who's younger. That's what phones used to look like. The other phone he got, the little cell phone that looks weird, the banana phone as well. That's also how cell phones used to look. That's a cellular telephone as opposed to just a regular telephone. Because the cellular phone was the amazing bit and we were used to the fixed line. Correct. Right. Where you dial the numbers and you kind of just... And it was cabled. Call people. You couldn't really take it farther than just this area. Yeah, yeah. And you never know who's calling you. It could be Agent Smith. It could be... You don't know. You have to go, Morpheus. Who is it? Could be Choi again. That is true. Isn't it funny when you think about it?

7:01But then again, today... Yeah, it's just a different number of numbers. How did you answer the phone back in the day? I still answer the phone. I didn't. That's my... That's how I do it. I don't answer the phone. Phil was afraid it was Agent Smith calling. I wait for the answering machine and then I listen to it. And I'm like, oh, okay, it was that guy. At home, I was just... I look at his fancy pants with his answering machine. I was just... Hello. Hello. Really? Yeah. Hello. I would go, hello, this is, you know, my rescue residence. That's good. You were good. You were a proper boy. Yeah, we didn't have any of that formality. We just had... Hello. Hello. Just hello. It's like we just, out of nowhere, just appeared. Hello. Neo's worse. He has nothing. Neo just picks up a phone and waits. He waits for someone to say, hello, this is blah, blah, blah.

7:43All right. No, before we go on, this has nothing to do with the matrix, but I was wondering, why isn't there a universal caller ID implemented yet with phones? Like, why isn't there... Why isn't there like a giant... Like a D-base? Yeah. Like, why isn't there a true one where you can see the person's name when you're calling? It's strange, yeah. Maybe, I guess, privacy. Yeah. Privacy, yeah, I know, but... And you can call, look it up on the line and then call people. You don't, you know, still want to have, like, people access to your phone that only you give them, you know? Okay. Makes sense. Makes sense. Anyway, yeah. So then, let's talk about the conversation. This is the meat. The meat. So, just wanted to say that it's a great shot where it's just a close-up of the phone. It's a shallow depth of field.

8:26Neo walks towards it. We have a little bit of frame space to see Neo coming towards it, picking it up, and then the camera trails all the way up, and, you know, and he picks up the phone, and it's, like, wide. It's a really nice shot there. It's very cool. It's all continuous. Definitely. So, Morpheus talks. He says, this line is tapped. They got to Neo first. And then he hints, first of all, how important Neo is. If, you know, if Morpheus... If they knew what I know, he'd probably be dead. And Neo, being a narcissistic, self-centered man, loves it. He's like, yes. Tell me more, Morpheus. Tell me. And then he goes, wait, what does this mean?

9:06You know, and he goes, you are the one. He's pretty blunt there. He's just, you're the one. Doesn't even tell him what that is, what that means. Just, you're the one. What do you say about that? He just stumbles through all of this, really. He's a lazy guy. He's just like, okay, yeah. He doesn't really have anything to say. Unless it's too late. Then it's too late. Then he's like puking and yelling at everyone. But up until this point, he's like, well, let's see where this goes. Well, that's exactly like a reflection of the audience. He's a vessel of the audience. So he doesn't have to have so much personality as much as he just needs... You know, our investment is as much as his investment. So we're taking the journey with him. Our reaction is kind of the same. He's like, let's see where this leads.

9:47Let's see, Morpheus. Come on, show us. Show us the ways of the red pill, yo. And Morpheus says, you see, you may have spent the last few years looking for me. Yeah. But I spent my entire life looking for you. And then the lightning goes... Do you still want to meet? Let's meet her. And Neo says... It's not here. Ah, poop! It's not yet. It's a minute afterwards. Well, I'm getting carried away. He said, do you want some meat? I'll get you some Christmas meat. And Neo said... I'll get you some Christmas meat. Interesting place over in the corner. What do you think? Like, it's the one. This is the first time we're hearing this. I don't know, Philip. I don't know what I think. The one. Could be Gobbledygook from Morpheus. Yeah. Yeah. Morpheus tried this like a hundred times. Yeah. I'm pretty sure he tried it with everyone and everyone just dies.

10:28It's like the, you know, mad scientist. It is true, though. It is true. Nope. He didn't dodge the bullets. It's... In the earlier script, we found out that the previous people who were... That's evidently the ones... What? What? I'm leaving that until we talk with Cypher, because that's where it comes up. Okay. What, Cypher was the previous one? No, no, no, no, no, no. He's not dead. No, no, no. Well, I could tell you there's an alternate opening to the film, but I don't have any of my notes to read. No, it's okay. We'll save it then. We'll do the next one. We'll save it. Anyway... Join us in the next hundred episodes to find out what is the secret. I know I leave things very far ahead, but still...

11:09No, that's big of it. Okay, next episode... This is Phil every episode. No, no, no, no, no. I promise, I promise, next episode I'll have... In three episodes, I will talk about it. I'll have that amazing opening. It's an interesting opening from an earlier draft, and you'll find it very interesting. Will we get to listen to it? Yes. Okay. Good. Is there anything else... Rebiting. Because literally nothing is spoken except you're the one, blah, blah, blah, and he was like, They got to him first. The line is tapped. Morpheus's crap. He's just like, oh, Neo, oh, well, if they only knew... I know. If they only knew. Do you hear what I hear? Do you hear what I hear? Do you see what I see? This scene without audio is hilarious. I've just watched Neo turn off the sound and just watch Neo react.

11:52And he's thinking, oh, I have to do more karate training tonight. It looks like he's kind of ordering a pizza and he's undecided. He doesn't know what else. The guy goes, okay, what toppings? And he just stops. We have a deal, you know, two for one, that kind of stuff. And Neo's like, oh, I'm conflicted. If this was a horror movie, that entire shot, the blackness on the left, something would appear slowly. A little demon. Or Agent Smith laughing. Also, why is Neo sleeping? Oh, right. This is what I wanted to ask. How did they get... Okay. Again, if this is real, which it is clearly because later Trinity takes out the bug.

12:36Yeah. How did they get Neo into his bed? I like to imagine the nice agent who put the chair back in, as we previously noted on it. That was Agent Brown. Agent Brown in the previous episode. I don't know if you guys heard Phil mention. You can see in the shot, he slowly and nicely puts the chair away. I think it was Agent Brown's job, you know. You know, he got him back in there. He put on some tunes. Like, he put him in the backseat of his car, put nicely a blanket over here. Exactly. He gets in the room. So he's nice and comfy while on the ride to his place. Turns on the computer, puts on some smooth jazz, probably some upbeat smooth jazz. Puts on his little gloves. Turns on some lights. Turns on some lights so when Neo wakes up, he doesn't fumble. Take off his suit.

13:17In the dark room. Put it on the hanger nicely. But look, he changed him. And puts his jammies on. Gives him a little goodnight kiss. And he's like... Tucks him on the head. Goes, that'll do, pig. Tucks him in. And then... No, then they said something like really sinister at the end. Like, you know, we'll find you or something. Because they had the bug tracking. Yeah. Tucks him in. And then switches off the light. No, he leaves the light on. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because he doesn't want him to fumble and stumble in the dark when he wakes up. Yes. And leaves a little sandwich in a glass of water. Because, you know, such a traumatic experience. Having your mouth dry and like stuck together, it'll probably feel really dry in there. So the glass of water will be... The pleasures of the Matrix food. Yes. I would like to imagine that Agent Brown is a nice one.

13:58Yeah. They always go like... They're like, Brown, you don't put the glass of water for them. It's supposed to be a traumatic experience. But they're humans. You need to understand. They have feelings. They have emotions. And they always make fun of him. He's like the third, you know, the nice guy of the group. Yeah, he's a nice guy. So he drives away back to HQ. You know? And they're like... Stop buys for some Mickey D's. You know? Mickey D's. And then brushes his teeth so the other agents don't know. But they know because... But they know because... He wants to see what it's like to be human. He's liking the human life. I can smell it. You know, this human stuff, not so bad. McDonald's. The Szechuan sauce. I can smell it. The Szechuan sauce. Yeah. So that's pretty much how Neo wakes up. And that's the whole story. I like it. It makes a lot of sense. Canon.

14:39Yeah. Canon. Perfect. How to make the Matrix worse. All right. Well, this has been minute 22. Catch 22 with Neo. Catch 22 with Neo. Thomas A. Anderson. Sophie's Choice. We would very much... We're getting close to the point where we would really like guests. So if any of you who are minute people... Minute men, as it were. And minute women. Well, I use the term, you know, colloquially as a... Because it sounds great. Minute men. Okay. It's like mystery men, you know. There's a lady in mystery men. Oh, really? The movie. One lady because they're sexist. What's the name? Hmm? The guy from Dressport 3.

15:20Ben Stiller. Okay. Anyway. Ben Stiller. Yes, we want to have guests on. Yeah. And let us know if you want a guest. If you want a guest, we'll ship you one. Like Agent Brown. Talk to Neo and... Yep. We'll ship you a guest. Yeah, and you can hang out and talk and you can give us your thoughts on The Matrix. And hang out with us while we... Correct. ...go through The Matrix. So I think we'll have maybe soon here guests. We're going like after Morpheus, so we're close to that. We're going after Morpheus? I was hoping it would be after the red pill, blue pill. Yeah, because we then take the journey. So far, you have to put up with us. And then it opens up. New characters come into the movie and new characters come into our podcast.

16:01Hopefully, maybe. Who knows? Maybe people won't like us, you know? You know. You never know. Maybe we'll just cancel the whole show. No. We must finish. No, we're not doing that. To completion. Finish it. We're not giving up. Finish it. Yeah. Thank you for listening. We are on Twitter and on Facebook. We're on Twitter at The Matrix Minute. Facebook, I am at Phil Dragish. I'm at Jake Dragish. I'm at Timo Majorsky. And leave us a wonderful review on iTunes. We'd love that movie. We'd love it. That's how we get famous. Thank you. And good night. Good luck. Good luck.

16:46Thank you.
