0:00The Matrix Minute, a podcast where we discuss the first film one minute at a time. Hello. Hi, Mike. Hi, I'm Jake. What? And that's Tim. And with us is our special guest, Seb. Hello, sir. Hello. Hello. Ah, welcome back. Welcome back. And here we are, once again, talking about Minute 121. Oh, before we move on to 121. Yes. I interrupt you. So, I want to ask a question to our very guest here. You said, you know, you saw The Matrix and it was amazing.
0:42But you weren't into movies back then. But you are now. What are the movies that you maybe watched for the last 10, 15 years that spoke to you and loved it, The Matrix? Is there any good examples that you can give us? Yeah, there are a couple. Well, Nolan's Batman movies were pretty good, I think. Also, like, on the technical level, because that's something I obviously look at a lot. I like those a lot. I would even say all of Nolan's latest movies, actually. Yeah. Well, let's go through some of those. I'm trying to think. What are his latest movies, by the way? Dunkirk. Inception.
1:24That's a little old. It's a little old. No, no, no. Interstellar. Interstellar was before. I haven't seen Interstellar and I haven't seen Dunkirk. You're late. Sorry. Inception has kind of been Matrix vibe, though. Oh, yes. Yeah. It was very advertised a bit. Not advertised, but I think people who were, like, recommending everything, I got that, like, oh, it's like the Matrix of this generation kind of thing going on. Oh, I don't know about that. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know about that. Did you see that wonderful... There were a lot of the Matrix of this generation movies. You know, the most ironic one was when Ghost in the Shell came out and it said, this generation's Matrix. Yeah, that was quite ironic. So ironic. It's ironic. Yes, that was...
2:05That's on... That's like... It was on Empire Magazine or something. It was so bad. Really? Like, come on, guys. Because, yeah, Matrix was inspired by that. Same animation, so... Yeah. They should have said, like, when Lord of the Rings came out, this generation, Lord of the Rings. Oh. Matrix, this generation. Oh, wait, it is Lord of the Rings. Yeah. So, yeah, the Nolan Batman films. What did you think of Dark Knight Rises? That's a good question. Yeah, not as good as the other ones, but... Yeah. I don't really see them as separate movies, to be honest. Oh, okay. Oh, interesting. So you kind of look at, like, one big film.
2:46Yeah. Even though there are some obvious changes between them, but, you know, still, I tried to see it as the whole trilogy. That's interesting, because, like, for me, it's like... They are... For me, they're quite different films. Oh, they are. Yeah, yeah. But still... Yeah. Yeah. Like, the first one... The first one is the most different, I think, from the three. Even Gotham, the design, it's very different. I was, like, watching that recently. Yeah. Gotham is more, like, Tim Burton-y in the first Batman Begins. And then later on, it's just, like, a regular old city. Mm-hmm. I think it was, like, inspired a lot more by the previous Batman stuff. That's a good point. And then it kind of found its own footing as far as Dark Knight. And then it kind of lost it. Do you know when it came out in that night as well?
3:28Jacob's just steamrolling over Tim's comments. I'm so sorry. That's okay. I was pandering it anyway, so it's fine. Well, I sensed Tim was just saying things, and I was just kind of... So, 99 came out to Memento. What do you guys think of Memento? Seb, what do you think... It was 2000. Whatever. Go on. It's close. Seb, what do you think of Memento? Yeah. It's probably a very unique movie, I would say. Even just because the whole storyline is so scrambled. I mean, that's... I really enjoy that one, yeah. Yeah. I think Memento is a great movie. That's my favorite Nolan movie. From what I heard is the black and white stuff is the stuff that actually happened.
4:09That's the truth. That's the truth. Aha. I can't remember. I just like it because... Or is it the other way around? It's the other way around. The color is the truth. The black and white is not. The black and white thing is not truth. Okay. Ugh. Gotta see those again. Joey Pants is in it. Carrie Ann Moss is in it. I just know that Memento, what was great about it, is that I'm very fascinated by movies that tried to break traditional storytelling structure. And I think Memento is one of those films that's just a really good example of a movie that's really making you think on your feet the entire process of watching the movie. Because it's so disjointed in terms of its timeline. You're like, oh, cool, cool, cool. Carrie Ann Moss didn't remember when you mentioned it. Joey Pants as well.
4:49I think that, you know, there's a little bit of a criticism of, you know, what's his face? Nolan. The director we're talking about. Nolan. Nolan. I mean, I think Nolan. I like the Memento because there was no, like, extra philosophical thing. Because he likes to sort of, like, add an extra flavor to it, you know. But I think he kind of struggles of going... I talked about this before. He always struggles. He could go full Kubrick with it. Like, go super vague and everything. But he always tries to tie it in with a nice bow at the end of the movie. And for something that's strictly plot-driven, like Memento, it works very well. It's very tight. And it's a great storytelling.
5:30And all the beats match there. But he kind of, like I say, like Interstellar or Inception. It goes to great depths. And I love it. And you're enjoying it. And then it kind of comes down. And, like, tie it up in the end. Like, just, like, choked. It doesn't give you the space to breathe in kind of thing. So that's always... That's why I like Memento. Yeah, me too. Ah. I see. But, yeah, that's true. Also, it's a great way to just visualize, like, for a better word, amnesia. Because that's what he has, right? True. Yeah. I love that. Because you get to see the characters from different perspectives. And, you know, with having... What's that word?
6:11I can't speak. Never mind. Skip it. Okay. Do it live. We're moving. You wanted to analyze... You wanted to just retcon something from the previous minute. So, um... Bell pappers. That's as far as... No, no. I'm joking. So, Seb... No, no. It's fine. It's fine. Seb pointed out something pretty cool. That when Neo runs to the apartment of the two grannies watching the old TV, that they might be twins. And we had a close look. And they very may be twins. And it's just lovely to see a little life of these two grannies. One's watching the TV. One's cooking some bell peppers and some cauliflower. And it's a serene beauty. And then they get, like, copied agents on them.
6:53And they may never get back to the bell peppers. Do you think they change them back? Well, if they copy... If they copy to another person, which I don't think they do because they got, you know, they got Neo by the balls. I almost said by the balls. But they got him. So, I don't think... Do they copy for one more character? Or this is their final form? Hmm. Because if they copy, it's great because the granny just wakes up in the middle of the street. Like, where the hell am I? I was cutting bell peppers and now I'm in the middle of the street. And... But, uh, if they don't, then... How did I get here, Margaret?
7:34Margaret! What are we doing here? Bertha, I don't know Bertha. I was also cutting bell peppers. Margaret! Margaret! Until the dreadful young man came through. His shirt was too tight. Criminal! Criminal running! Stealing my cauliflower! I was just going to make cauliflower cream soup, Margaret. I know! I know, Bertha! It is my favourite! I'm going to hurry on back home, Bertha! I was just watching the telly. I was just watching that... Prisoners! Yes!
8:15It's always on at eight o'clock. Okay, I'm so sorry. Yeah. So that's them. Margaret and Bertha. And then Margaret goes, do you think this world is even real? I don't know, Bertha. This is the third time this week. But I do know that at nine o'clock they're playing the James Bond movie. I do like James Bond. Oh, he's very handsome. Which one? Oh, of course. Sean Connery. Anyway. This is the minute 121.
8:55Yes. One to one. Let's have a one to one together. Oh, wow. We didn't do the description yet. Wow. One to one. The Sentinels open their laser-powered cutting apparatus and begin to break into the neb. Morpheus opens the cover to the EMP button, but assures Trinity that he's going to make it. Neo runs to the old hotel with an agent right behind him. Smith, on the other side, looks up at the hotel in suspicion. Neo is told to get up to the fire escape at the end of the alley, room 303. He's fired upon, but manages it. The agents are still in pursuit, and the Sentinels ripped open the hull, and they begin crawling in. Oh, yeah!
9:35This is the Sentinels. That's all the sound. Well, the Sentinels are here. We get to see them in action instead of just a couple of them searching around. This one, they just start jumping onto the roof. They start jumping onto the ship. You know what's weird? They're like spiders. They're both differently colored. One is more blue, one is more green. Interesting. Some strange rendering going on there. Maybe I like, you know, different types. One's the sergeant, and the other one's the privates. Lieutenant's. Interesting. Lieutenant's squiddy. Honestly, guys, I have to admit that these Sentinels, I'm sorry, the way they did the CGI just reminds me of Final Fantasy, that movie that came out.
10:17The Spirits Within? Yeah. That is true. It's got that sheen, that shine. Mm-hmm. That 90s look. I'm blue and I believe. That's what it looks like. So, while the Sentinel is lasering himself in. Yeah, but like, look at his arms. With his lightsaber. You can look at the, yeah, his lightsaber comes out. With his lightsaber that comes out of his, you know, strange part of his body. He has like 24 little arms going, hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee. Yeah, kind of tickling him or something. Listen. He's either excited, because I don't know why I also will be like, sort of like wiggling like that. But you guys know why they put it in there in the animation. It's just, so it makes it look more lifelike. Yeah.
10:57Like an, like an insect. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. But did you, did you see that there's these other little arms that kind of hold its body? Yeah, this is the first time I'm noticing it too. Yeah. He's got like a whole set of everything. Just one laser. Too many eyes, too many legs, but just one laser coming out of his crotch. If you could call it a crotch. A crotch. Maybe you could call it the, uh, the, the, the thorax? Maybe it's a thorax? Oh no, it's like a little arm that comes out. It's not actually, like... See? There's a little, there's a little arm. It's, is it right, about to charge the EMP? No, he's about to press the button.
11:38You just have to press it. That's what I meant. No charging. Pressing the button. It is charged already. Trinity looks at him in great concern. Yes. As the camera whips by, you can see Tank in the middle. Tank should have had his hands on his ears and you're like, oh no. Yeah. Morpheus. Like Tim in Jurassic Park when, when, when Lex is doing the computer. And Tim's just helplessly holding his... I know nothing of this Linux system. Instead of, instead of moving the gun to Ellie or, or, or, you know. And Morpheus goes, he's going to make it. Yes. And Trinity goes, how do you know?
12:19How do you know that, Morpheus? The Oracle, she told me. She told you what, Trinity? What did she tell you? She told me that I would fall in love with the one. Really? She lied. That's what he goes. Really? She goes, yeah, but I tried to tell Neo at the subway, but the phone was ringing and the agent was coming on and I couldn't do anything. And we had to come back to the real world. It's so out of character for Trinity. It's like this meltdown. Yeah, yeah. Well, I tried to tell him, but he wasn't listening. And then I told him I loved him and he said, oh, he said, oh, I don't love you.
13:00And I was like, no, he said, he said, I think I want to kiss you. Oh, yeah. And I went, yeah. Yeah. The revealment of the, of the 1996 script. Hey, speaking of which, maybe we should do that. I told him I want to kiss you, but for real. Let me pick up the phone. I want it to be real. Okay. It sounds like. The Matrix isn't real, so far. You know what that sounds like? That sounds like. What's his face? Sorry. I'm blanking out here. Actor, two brothers, and he did Tommy Wiseau movie. James Franco doing Tommy Wiseau.
13:40That's what that sounds like. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I play movie for you. You do, you're doing The Valley Girl. Maybe. Let's keep going. So we're back at the hotel. Yes. Let's talk about this. Phil, you talk. Okay. So we're back. Where We Started. Look at that. It's the same kind of, you know, crane shot of the camera going up from the theater. Like it says, oh, the, what's it called? It's called. Let's see. What hotel? Oh, the city motel. Yeah, heart of the city hotel. Heart of the city hotel. And, oh, the F is missing. That's why. Well, oh, a posture.
14:22Get it? Like heart of the city. Oh, okay. Yeah. And this is the place where we began our film. Where at night the agents showed up and Trinity was watching Neo, I guess. And that's when the Nebuchadnezzar had way more staff. They are currently understacked. Yeah. Yeah. They're looking for their hiring. If you know anyone who has got, like, experience with aminos or making porridge or making some good drink, then send your series to nabjobs.com. That's right.
15:03And Neo's running. And an agent, I think it's Agent Brown, he's chasing him very closely. I think they've been chasing him. It has been very neck and neck pretty much the whole time. It's, you know, Neo never outran them. The agents were pretty much just, you know, at his tail. And as he's running, there's, in the foreground, Smith shows up and he just, maybe he did do a little teleportation. You want to believe that? So, so Martha is okay? You mean Martha? Yeah. Martha. Oh, so it's not the granny? Yeah. He found another body? Yeah. Just so he can teleport there faster. And as the camera goes down, you can see Smith, he's actually looking up at the hotel.
15:46He has an idea. He's probably thinking a little bit more organically than the other agents who are just blindly, you know, following Neo. Yeah. Their modules are chase, chase, chase, chase, chase, chase, chase, chase, shoot. I'm back. Chase, chase, chase, chase, chase, jump. Great algorithm right there. That's, you know, like the Terminator vision. Chase, chase, chase. Yeah. If subject, if object is running in front of you, chase, chase, chase, chase, chase. If object moves, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot. Okay. But Smith is thinking in a different way. So he's looking up at the window and we'll see where that goes later.
16:26So Tank tells him to go to room 303. It's up, up these stairs, up the fire exit. I mean, the ladder, not stairs. And he just throws the, he just throws that thousand dollar Nokia cell phone. It's sad. Seb, do you remember the Nokia? We were talking about it earlier in the couple episodes ago. It was the Nokia 5110, I think. I think 1811, no? 5110, yeah. Yeah. Do you remember that one, Seb? I do, yeah, yeah. But I never had one. Oh. Yeah.
17:07Yeah. Did you ever have the Nokia blue one? Tim, what's that one you had? I don't know, numbers really hard. 3210? That's one I remember. Yeah, I think that's one. I think that's the one. Did you ever have that one? That was blue. Yeah, 32, no, wait. 3210 is the one after, or before. I had the one after. 3310. Yeah, the one after, yeah. 3310. Yeah, the one with the curves. Yeah. I saw that everywhere. I almost wanted to get one myself. No. Yeah, that's the one. That's the one. 3310 is the famous one, in my opinion. Yeah, the one that they reissued. Yeah. And then they reissued the nano one, too. But it looks weird. Oh, yeah, the original.
17:47Yeah, 3310. That's the one. That's the one. Yeah, yeah, exactly. I was going to say, the phone with Snake 2. That's the one I had. You had it? No. Snake 2, and also had, you could, what? I got this from my mom. So, Seb, you never had the 3310? No. I think I did 3210. Yeah. But I... Oh, okay. I had very few mobile phones in my life. Oh, really? Oh. I think I'm actually on my fourth or fifth one now. Yeah. Yeah, to be honest, I think I had... That's awesome. I had a few when I was younger. Yeah, Jacob, when you were a kid, you had cell phones.
18:27I think I had more when I was a kid. When you were like six. Yes. When I was six, as a teenager, I had like nothing. And as an adult, I had like these smartphones. So, a very strange mobile phone history. Yeah, that's right. Little child running with Alcatel phones. That's true. I didn't have a cell phone until, I don't know, two years ago. That's true. Yeah, you were Christopher Nolan. That's right. You know what surprised me? Back here in Serbia, a lot of people used to get German satellite television. And back in the day when, you know, cell phones were like the big thing, like every commercial was about like get a ringtone, get a video, get an SMS. Like in Germany, that's the entire, or in Austria, that's the entire commercials.
19:11Now, the funny thing is like now smartphones have been a thing, what, like for 10 years already, right? You know. And we were in Berlin and I turned on TV and there's still commercials. Like you can get like, now you get like backgrounds for your smartphones or something like that. I'm like, why is this still on the TV? How is this still happening? Any comments, Seb? You're still supposed to send an SMS to buy them? Yes. Seriously? Yes. You still like, yes. You like send an SMS or an MMS or something like that. It's like, people know there's an internet. Like you can get anything you want. Wow. That's terrible. I watched close to no TV actually. So, I didn't know about this. Yeah. I don't watch TV. It used to be. It used to be a whole economy.
19:52Like, yeah. The early 2000s. We used to get, here's an interesting story, Seb. We used to get, do you know the magazine GamePro? No. Well, anyway, it's a German magazine. Well, actually GamePro, I don't know who it was. It was Austrian? No, no, no. It's German. It's German. Not Austrian. Whenever we get these kinds of magazines, they're all from Germany. Yeah. Well, Austria gets a lot of stuff from Germany. So, GamePro was this magazine that covered video game stuff. Reviews and news. Yeah, yeah. Blah, blah, blah. And the funny thing was like, every other page was an ad for like cell phone backgrounds or cell phone ringtones or, you know.
20:35That's right. Oh, yeah. It's like, naked ladies too. Naked ladies as well. Exactly, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it peaked with the crazy frog, didn't it? Oh, yeah. The crazy frog was just like, the song and everything. Yep. And then they tried to recreate it every year with like something stupid. It was like, that was like that rhino or something like singing the jungle song. Oh, I forgot about that. I don't know what you guys are talking about. Oh, the gummy bear. Oh, the gummy bears, man. I think that's like, kids still love that one. I am a gummy bear. Just being that gummy bear. It was just like the hardcore German techno always in the background. Yeah, okay.
21:15High college magical world. Yeah. Anyway. Back to the Matrix Minute. Yes. Neo is running and he throws the phone away. That's where we had this whole conversation started. And then he just jumps up into the ladders and he's going on up there into that hotel that we started our movie in. Craziness. So these agents are just furious. And this guy just knocks himself into the wall. Well, I wanted to say this. This is one agent who just comes. He's so in a rush. Here's Jones. To get Neo. Yeah. That he like hits his hip against the wall so hard. Like. As he's going up the ladder. Yep. And he starts shooting at him.
21:56So make note of that. Make note of that. Dear listener, go put on a Blu-ray or now the UHD 4K version. Yeah. And go to Agent Brown hitting his hip against the wall. It's Jacob's very good shot. He's going to put that at his wall painting. Yeah. He's going to send an MMS to get this one. That's correct. It's only three euros. It's amazing. It's a bargain. For my iPhone. Three euros on there. But if you actually get it, it's like 20 euros because all the extra. And you would accidentally subscribe to the service. Oh, please. Yeah, of course. I would love to get more videos like this. Yeah. So Agent Brown.
22:36It used to be. Yeah, go ahead. Yeah. No, it just used to be a whole. Do you want to talk about more of those ads? It's so weird because I want. Yeah. I want to also talk about before the color. Because like when I was talking about Gameplay, I was talking about how there's color. Color pictures, you know, like. Yeah. We talked about even like nudes and stuff like that. But before that, there were also the black and white. Yeah. The graphics. Nokia 3. 1.0 stuff. Where it's like people would literally go and make pixel art. Of things. You guys remember that? Yeah. And it'd be like also like really bad things. Yeah. Like a guy like. Lots of weed. A middle finger and like weed. There's lots of weed. Oh, the weed pictures.
23:17Yes. And there would also be the sexy. The skull. Sexy photos. But there wouldn't be photos because they would be pixel art. Yeah, they're just like 8-bit. I think. Amazing. On that 3-3-10, you had like a bill. The ability to create your own melody. That was like the best thing. I remember that. Yeah. Because you would just type in the letters. And I think it was caps lock or something like that. You would type numbers. Letters and numbers. And like that would be the velocity. And numbers would be. Letters would be like which note. And then you. I would go online and like find like the matrix for it. You know.
23:58And then. And then I would download it. And print it. And then the paper sitting. Sitting on my bed. Oh my goodness. Type in the damn song in. And what would it sound like? Then you have a ringtone. What? What's the final product sound like? It's just like a. Just like a. Like a one. You know. Monophonic. Just like. Like a song. You can. Like. You know. Like a download riff. I had like system of a down. It's kind of like a MIDI file. Yeah. Yeah. Like exactly. Like a MIDI file. I remember I did one of. I think like. Like a song I made. Like reason. I. I. Transcoded. And like. I look. Ringtone. It's a song I composed. Great.
24:39Congratulations. Great story. Great story. Those were weird times. My last story with this was a long time ago. At the time it was 2001. Or something like that. Where I got my first phone. Which is Alcatel. Something something. It was a blue phone. A blue one. Yeah. Yeah. In Croatia. And they had this thing where you can actually go online. Believe it or not. On that phone. Ooh. I know. And you would pay per minute for being on their portal. On the network's portal. Yeah. And when you go into the portal. You could then go there and browse. For ringtone. Can you imagine browsing in such a small screen. I remember it. LCD. It took ages.
25:19I think that was part of the marketing scheme. Because they're just sucking up your money. For every minute you're browsing. Yeah. And then when you find something you buy. And you buy a ringtone. You're like. This is great. Link in park. Yeah. Yeah. What a great purchase That's it Yeah Oh That's the ringtone But can they also do Yeah monophonic I think my Alcatel is monophonic Is that the word monophonic? Just one note And then the later ones I don't know You can actually put a MIDI Then I got a Siemens phone And that one had polyphonic Ooh rock on Yeah I remember the Lord of the Rings theme Like the You know the fellowship theme
26:00Really? Yeah midi It's my favorite Because that business is gone Like the business of Transposing songs into midi Yeah Now I think everyone just Puts them on vibrate And that's it Yeah I don't even bother With like having this Custom ringtone anymore Except what about you? Yeah I agree Ringtone and vibrate No one No one I know Does this anymore Yeah Because it's just Abnoxious too Yeah yeah yeah I think many people Actually went back To the classical Analog ringtone Ringtone Really? I hear that a lot Yeah yeah yeah Oh he's just like Like the Matrix Exactly Yeah yeah For a long time One of my most dreaded
26:40Ringtoises I hate that The stupid Apple Default Call The default iPhone I want to strangle it And throw it out a window And shoot it This is so annoying And some people Do you know But it's funny how Some people put the volume Up at 100,000% Yeah Yeah And they're like I'm just sitting in the tram And the Ba da da Bum bum bum bum bum And orchestra Blaring through the tram As you're like What is this? Go ahead It's funny how That You know That culture changed Like in the office Most of the guys Have it always on Like Silent Like I do I never have my phone
27:21On loud Exactly Ever And there's still Some few guys That I don't want to like Label But they're A bit from out of town And stuff like that Where it's like It's still common to have I guess Like on loud I don't know what it is But there's a few guys Around And it's like They can't talk right now But they don't put it on mute They just look at it And there goes A few cycles I'm like I'm just so weird now Like I cannot handle A phone ringing Around anywhere It's just like That's your private business Get that away from me Don't disturb It's like It's like smog Or another famous one Is the Samsung one Ba da da Do Is that one? No I don't know Ba da da Samsung Well actually
28:01There's actually a cool thing Samsung did by the way I actually really like this They did a campaign An ad campaign For their famous Samsung song Oh yeah Don't recognize They're not so famous Yeah Jacob Collier did The last one Collier Yeah I was gonna say They made some They got some artists To do renditions And covers Of the famous Quote unquote Samsung Ringtone And one was done by Dirty Loops Do you guys know that band? Yep Swedish I believe And the other one Was Jacob Collier He did his own rendition I thought they were
28:41Very clever At campaigning that Ringtone Yeah And that concludes Isn't like the Nokia the famous one? Do do do do do do do do do They should do that one too Okay You guys know that one? Maybe they have a Cellphone orchestra Like A medley of all the ringtones They do I'm pretty sure they do Because you know They're They're legendary I don't know what that is I always wonder Is it originally from Jurassic Park 3 or I don't know Who knows Anyway Okay Let's go back here The Matrix So All I wanted to say Was Agent Brown The gun looks way too big For him That's because he's a little He's a wuss Well the squibs on the
29:22On the On the On the ramp Are pretty cool You know You have to You have to put those in The gunshots Yeah and special effects You have to put those in separately You know It's not just like Someone's shooting and Well how do you do that by the way I always wondered It's on a cable And they just put squibs on there Like little explosives And then when you need to Have action They already They have him They have little Switches Oh Are they reusable Or are they probably Just like one shot Oh I'm not sure I don't think they're reusable Yeah I don't think so either I think You have to get a guy there To replace it So yeah
