4:56actually i wasn't that much into movies at the time surprisingly because i am very much now but at that time i was more into music so uh yeah well what was the matrix soundtrack i was gonna yeah yeah yeah big influence of course yeah yeah yeah and uh yeah so yeah i think the next thing was the the sequels then which yeah oh yeah oh yeah you want to talk about that because we're not going to talk i wanted to ask one last question i always kind of ask this question please do uh when you first watched the matrix is there something that really caught your attention that you sort of stuck out for you that you really loved about the films and maybe why they're why it's your favorite movie

5:38not the films i guess the visual style i mean obviously the green tint that's uh yeah that's almost a whole movie at least in the matrix parts i think that was when i first realized that uh the films can actually have a certain style instead of just you know being shot on camera and edited and then they're released that there's actually a little more to it i don't think i've seen anything like that like that before but i was still quite young so that doesn't have that much to say yeah that makes sense yeah yeah more like aesthetics uh more of like the the flavors yeah no no it's true because like it has a very very uh it has a very specific very specific look to it that is um well it's not

6:23being used in the plot like no one ever mentions that kind of look no no it is very but it's obviously used to make a distinction between the two worlds right yeah yeah yeah yeah exactly and also didn't we talk about i can't remember now it's been too many episodes uh with the grading do you think they did that was digital grading okay i have more information oh yes i have more information okay give us all right so um as we as i mentioned there has to be a uh they have to have um done it with a digital intermediate and they use digital grading because uh the guy who supervised that supervised the actual digital grading for the lord of the rings films and you know the evidence is right in the behind the scenes of uh fellowship of the ring it seems like we always talk about lord of the rings every single

7:06episode i don't know what's going on they're tied you know that's that's the era of movies that influenced us but uh some new information um came up where uh shit has i was reading some forums full of nerds talking about film transfers and what you know you know what material of photochemical processing they were using so and so people were mentioning how when they were in the theater the green wasn't so prominent neither was the blue so uh they were suggesting that it was probably a photochemical grading that they were used oh uh at the beginning for the film um i can't vouch for this anymore because i'm very confused you know the nature of um reality preserving and um uh you know

7:52keeping a look that was um honest and true and intended at the time seems to be a very complicated thing when it comes to film but on the other hand like if you know digital grading is always done post edit anyway it's not done to the actual you know so so they could have you know seen different different cuts of it i think there's a no yeah i think i think they want they they did some kind of i don't like the argument here right now is that i'm bringing up is is it digitally edited or is it um you mean digitally graded yeah definitely graded or is it or is it photo you can't get this kind of results with photochemicals kind of stuff yeah but you're watching uh a transfer that

10:39does because we watch it so much okay so here we go what what what what nothing you watch it somewhere so often often okay so often okay this is what happens minute 120 Neo bolts through the old apartment building with panic and every fiber of his body the hallways are narrow tank guides into the door the one on your left he tries to get through no your other left he smashes through and runs through an apartment inhabited by two old ladies one of them throws a knife but it's actually smith Neo runs to the fire exit and jumps into the trash the agents still close to him oh no here they come we see the five sentinels dive right onto the Nebuchadnezzar

11:19so this episode is mostly about Neo jumping and running and running many doors why did i say like visiting grandmothers and eating apple pies what if you just he's running there and then he sees an apple pie he steals well yeah running with pie how to make the matrix worse and that would include the granny like you know when he turns he still has the dress on and or the apron smith just like how about this the agent would come in and they would say like oh let's just you know hug each other hug this out and why why did this come from let's go let's go back to the beginning guys come on come on come on let's just go back to the beginning and slowly go through this okay

12:04all right so Neo's walking up the walk he's running up the stairs uh everything he's running this is all yeah well this is all handheld um right which i i really like and um as he and then and then he gets into this hallway and uh it's very similar to the oracles not not really it's not as wide i wouldn't say very similar i wouldn't say similar at all this is this is like some uh third world like uh like communist building like this doesn't like this doesn't you know new york to me at all this is very look at those walls what is that concrete that is true it is kind of weird and communist like this is uh what i'm used to yeah i wouldn't want to live there yeah yeah i love those old uh

12:52elevators that uh so so in in slovakia and probably in in eastern uh uh germany as well you have these buildings that are built all the way from like 60s up until the 80s they're made out of like concrete panels and basically i think they're like five different designs and they just copy pasted them oh yeah this damn country and it's just yeah oh they're so ugly it's just so bad and all of them expired like they're expiry date usually like 30 years and they all expired but i some of the old school ones used to have these the the caged elevators i love those that you can see the actual like the chains and everything going up i wish they used to redo the what do you think about the caged

13:35elevators i don't like that's scary i've never been in one actually i don't think they have them in germany maybe i have yeah tim what's where are you living to i live in freaking this this place was under a weird regime until 1989 when i got born i was the savior you saved the country um yeah i don't know about the i think this the cage elevators i don't know what to think i guess it depends i like them in movies i don't like i wouldn't like did you ever were you everyone that's true were you everyone i don't i can't i kind of like it more because when you're elevator you're kind of confined in it i'm not claustrophobic but you're confined in this place and it doesn't like when you can see

14:15the actual mechanics i don't know it's it's much more true that is true you can see what's going on you know feels nicer i think what my favorite kind of elevator is let's think do do do you know why they put uh mirrors in elevators no why yeah yeah why because the false perception of space because so people are not claustrophobic because the mirrors are always on two sides or three sides so it kind of gives you no if it was on two sides what causing infinity that's why that's why they put it so then you have us i never see an infinity i only see one mirror because otherwise it would make it look like it's going we have it in our in our world we have the infinity thing so you have us like uh like this false space you know like it's bigger than it's a doctor do you have any mirror

14:59stories about elevators do you uh not really no but yeah i think it's so it seems bigger definitely yeah i never thought about that me either i mean i'm not claustrophobic so i don't care i found elevators cozy anyway but i think uh i kind of like you know um i kind of like small elevators like the you know like sort of like two-person elevators one person elevator the ones they bring up sandwiches and the hotels yes i think they're kind of cool yeah i like fast elevators right like the ones in and those big skyscrapers chicago yeah i do like fast ones they're awesome what are glass elevators you guys like those

15:41oh i have not been in many really i've been in a couple i like tiny ones like we're in the fresh market remember there's like a uh there's like a tiny one it's like one floor or something that's one they had malls they used to have them right yeah sometimes they're even uh outside of the building that's that can be pretty interesting that's good i don't remember the name of that building in this uh in this bank area there you know what i mean there's like this white arch i think it's it's called something like that too okay it's like a grand arc or something like that okay and they have a i think it had an elevator that that goes up like between the arch so oh okay that was

16:23pretty interesting yeah that that that that that that looks pretty cool you know what always reminds me of reminds me of uh that scene in the mall and commando yes i know i know said if you've seen commando i can't recall sorry it's arnold it's a 1985 film arnold schwarzenegger and he's and his name is john matron that's why i keep referencing and uh his daughter gets kidnapped uh what's what's her name alicia milano alicia milano well her character was jenny the actress she's small and she gets kidnapped she's like and he's like i'm gonna save her and then just like attacks a whole island with like an arsenal of a boat that's just yeah he's single-handedly like kills 50 people on an

17:07island it's awesome it's one of my favorite movies honestly it's 1985 like in a film and then he fights a fat greasy man with a mustache and a chain mail with a knife from australia it's like the most like homoerotic thing you've ever seen in your life but it's also it's also so mismatched because arnold is like yes you really need to watch commando i think yeah yeah i think everybody needs to watch commando it's a classic and it's just but the thing is it's not like it's weird because it's dated but it's dated in a very good way okay like it's not too dated you know it's not like pure synth music and stuff yeah there's a lot of it's hilarious it's just like the perfect arnold film yes yes like if i were to say arnold his best action film for like schlocky action film like

17:50it's in the between it's not like too serious you know it's not either too schlocky and too out there too cheesy yes you know him but it's like right in the middle i think it's like they reached peak with that one and it kind of you know either it's a bit it's a nice it's a nice balance because i think you can never go wrong and having a good time watching commando i just realized commando is pretty much taken the movie you're right well i mean she's not a teenager yeah yeah taken is a bit more like mr old spy man this is like my dad is a you know a mountain pretty much and he's gonna come so anyway Neo keeps running in the hallway i am a mountain and he's talking to tank on the phone

18:30while he's running through the hallway right yes and as he's running through the hallway he's like tank where do i go next and there's this great shot this great shot of this agent just showing up at the end of the hall and i love it because it's shaky but you still make out what it is and he takes out his gun and it's just it's spooky it's a spooky look you know this is the sort of stuff that i love i love it when you you know you don't you don't get a close-up of this guy you just see it from nia's point of view and it's a shaky thing and you know it's dangerous but you can't focus on it yet but you know that the danger is there and that's the effect that i get from that yeah you know what i just noticed like when the the arm of the second agent comes in with the gun the door on the right is actually moving you see that oh my goodness you're right

19:14i said someone's speaking it's what's going on it's wiggling look look look look at the door ghost that's why that's why phil finds it spooky someone's trying to escape yeah perhaps yeah it's the key maker well that just shows you that this is a key maker he lost his key the one key yeah yeah he lost Neo oh wait not the right movie yeah um yeah well that tells you that it was a set yeah it does it's true yeah the power of the gun was too powerful on that door also do you know what's annoying me the lamps or the lights on the ceiling look how some of them are angled and some

19:54of them are different angles that that's bugging me that just tells you there was a set yeah i think are you sure it could be design element because i think the the actual ceiling is crooked or there's the lamp it looks like it it looks like uh like you said tim way back in like the second episode because i was listening to that yesterday for some reason you're you're talking about german expression oh yes yes yes yes there we go the cabin of the caligari yep it's got a lot of that like those weird like angles and then yeah wf more now yes just good um so so i want to talk about something i want to talk about the other left now this is a it's a cliche thing that's been said in movies like a zillion times okay so let's talk about the joke let's go what what is where's the source of this

22:45it's very what did you expect what did first i thought it was Agent Smith like he transformed into the anchor i thought i thought it was um Neo's boss from the office really seb what did you think was on the television i have no idea but i'm noticing that what's actually in the screen doesn't have any motion blur yeah yeah yeah yeah it doesn't it looks composited yeah i think it has to do with the refresh rate yeah it's the refresh rate of the television as the camera is moving by is in sync with the camera so the shutter uh so it doesn't you would still get some motion blur i think okay but i think because of the way the the um the television is flickering you know because the television is just a stream of you know very high speed beams that are scanning a picture that it's

23:28going fast enough for it to actually you know overcome the what do you think motion what is your opinion the shutter yeah yeah i think i think that's i'm not sure in this case but it could also be just tracked in later but i wonder why they would do that because that's the weird thing about it is that on top part there's like a little white little line that kind of continues into the screen so i'm a little bit confused what that is it looks like it looks it actually does look like somebody was something was composited on and that's actually the shine of the tv turned off i don't know it's it's a bit strange it's a bit weird anyway you guys want to know what the image was yes what is it yes or is

24:10well it's it's from a tv show a british tv show from 1967 called the prisoner and uh it's a spy kind of television show it takes place in london um and their agents secret agents spying around and uh the agents uh their names are numbered and in this case this is uh more or less an antagonist character called number two and uh and interestingly enough the main character is called uh number six and as we all know Neo is number six in the meta contextual sense actually one one thing sorry um did you notice that when he comes in the door uh the hat is falling down let me see oh yeah he

24:55breaks the breaks the granny's hat oh he's looking for an exit that's perfect there it is oh i feel i am i'm feeling so happy right now exactly that's probably it this is it he's trying to exit there's Mister Hat yep yep Mister Hat exits as well the frame seb found your answer that's going to be on on the opening uh title sequence in the tv show we're going to make the animation yeah the the hat's going to drop from that from that apartment are people are going to cheer everybody's going to cheer i'm going to love that hat so anyway these these these old ladies um nothing much to say about that the only thing i i kind of like is that the the one cooking is sort of making a it's like a creepy look you know i don't know like is it just me

25:38with this point of view camera yes yeah in the distance it's just it gives an un on you know like an uncomfortable feeling no yeah i mean it's it's weird because it's it's this near perspective so these ladies are very confused by some crazy guy wearing black is barging into their apartment and dropping their hat it's perfect you know horror thrill kind of situation you've got the bad guy who can be anyone it's great and now he's you know the way that's building up that he's multiplying himself on on these people immediately in seconds it's you know it's just there and he's evil it's great i love it it's it builds tension i gotta i gotta how could you know make make this matrix

26:19worse or maybe let's say maybe it's a exit Mister Hat kind of situation you see they're copying themselves really rapidly to all these poor people do you think they could make a mistake and two of them copy themselves on one and they're just like this jumble mess and the agent one of them agents mean like the thing yeah exactly it's it's like a you know agent uh smith and agent brown or what's who's the the wimpy one what's his name john brown yeah brown he's like this wimpy one brown why did you copy onto this one get out i i can't i can't we're stuck and just like you know this little bumble jumble of two and they're like they have the strength that's an episode of exit yeah and they have like strings between like Neo's mouth they're like hanging there the show writes itself exactly

27:01so anyway this knife gets thrown at him and it's it's another one of those scary things like it's all in broad daylight but like that knife and the thing being thrown and then Neo looking back and i thought it was the grandma throwing the knife i think everybody's supposed to yeah that's what do what like self-defense or what yeah i mean because because you don't see Agent Smith because remember what Morpheus says it's like everyone who's not unplugged is could potentially you know be an enemy and so i thought so i thought like in a dream you know everybody sees you and they're angry at you and even though they don't know you but they notice you all the time so it's like in a dream everybody's now ganging up on you like the entire world you know what i mean yes that's the

27:41kind of thing i thought about so Neo finally gets out of the building nearly but he's on the fire escape stairs that's right and this is actually this is actually a very tense moment because look how close the agents are to Neo like they are very close to Neo they're just steps away and Neo makes a leap of faith no this is me joking around but he makes a jump over the fire escape into the trash right which is at least like two or three stories down oh he's okay with that he can jump remember yeah of course i'm just saying like i'm just explaining to the listener and he goes down to the trash and i wanted to really quickly mention something here which i always noticed is you know

28:23this is a classic movie editing technique which is used like you guys remember in films like indiana jones and the temple of doom where for instance they're in that place where indiana jones and short round are stuck in that room he says the other right oh yeah doors are closing or not even that maybe even raiders like raiders when uh the door is closing to the intro temple land where he's stealing the little golden artifact he's running away from the ball yeah and right at the end as the door is closing this is a classic movie technique where it cuts oh yeah and the door is even further up than it was but you don't notice but you don't oh yeah he's gonna make it so it's like the door is

29:09you know halfway down and then suddenly cuts it's like oh it's one thing fourth of the way down it's going down and making it way to the halfway point and so on and so this is what reminded me of when Neo jumps down to the garbage basically we get the shot of Neo sort of ruffling through the garbage you don't want to mention the little matrix thing for for some reason you mentioned it right there yeah like well i just don't understand the purpose it's great it's a little motif it's a little reprise yeah yeah but he's going to the trash glorious it's glorious it's just it's all about feeling not about always connecting the things fine so he jumps down we see just a bit of Neo uh ruffling through the trash and suddenly like

29:49like a second later the agent comes down right and then Neo's already really far away from the agent oh that's what you're talking about that's what i'm saying the classic movie technique where here Neo got some extra time from the editing masters yeah yeah the editing gods yeah give him extra time but the editing gods like they also give extra time to doors and things you know but even even so it's even Neo falling you know he's like you see one shot he's jumping and he's almost almost down and then the other one you know he's exactly exactly exactly and he's jumping but that's okay that's a good technique i remember editing when i was a kid like movies and stuff and i couldn't figure it out i i thought like everything must be edited in real time so everything just went fell too short and dramatic you got to give that uh lead up i think we talked about this before like on you know the

30:33difference between action movies any thoughts on that seb on editing and getting more time and stuff like that do you ever notice that yeah i have noticed it yeah um do you utilize this i mean you you've you've mentioned that you know you do some video stuff do you do editing as well yeah but not that kind of stuff i wish i did yeah but uh no that's not what i do there you can always spice it up you know let them know it's just like uh yeah it's a random action scene just put it in there it's great it's good i could try but i don't know if the client would come back yeah maybe they would love it they would say like sad yeah it's a new thing yeah it's a new thing everybody's gonna want some of that just like starts off so serene and so beautiful and in the middle of it just like slowly turns battle i wouldn't mind doing it is there is there a thing like like a challenge that

31:20you like get a set of like uh stock videos and you have to make like an action movie out of it because i i saw a lot of memes when you know like make up some hilarious stuff with like oh not an action movie but you know thing is with uh with brand videos and stuff like that it always has to be emotional you know and no one can really explain what that actually means so yeah well maybe like somebody gets shot and they're like dying that's pretty emotional it's like yeah it's just somebody bleeding there thanks and the funniest thing is like you know corporate you never think when you hear the word corporate the last word you're thinking of is emotional exactly yeah but you're thinking of you're thinking of Agent Smith and agents and suits yeah yeah
