Minute 5: “That’s impossible!”

0:00Welcome to the Matrix Minute, a podcast where we discuss the first Matrix film one minute at a time. I'm Phil, and I'm taking both blue and red pills at the same time. Oh man, what would happen? The trace call. Okay, I'm Jake, and I recently found out that Keanu Reeves uses a British accent in not only Dracula, but in a Shakespeare film with Kenneth Branagh. Amazing. I'm Tim, and I bought my cell phone for the sole reason because of Matrix. Really? Well, I never thought of cell phones until I was like, oh, that's so cool.

0:41But Tim, it wasn't the awesome Nokia. No, no. Switcheroo. But I did have a walkie-talkie shaped like that Nokia. Like a fake toy one? It was a walkie-talkie shaped. Did you know that I am a big fan of this phone from this movie and not the one from the second one? Not the Samsung one, the spaceship one? I do like the Samsung one. That was terrible. This is what happens in the minute. Trinity runs on the roof. Agent Brown right after her. Cops are slow. Agent Brown just as agile as she is. That's impossible. And that's it. And the minute ends as Agent Brown jumps down and crouches and Trinity sees him and he rises with his gun going.

1:27Thank you, Michael J. Fox. That's about it. So the first order of business is the guns that the agents carry are Desert Eagles. Yep. I was super into guns when I was a kid. Did he kill him? And the Desert Eagle that they use is the same one on the billboard. Is it? Yep. Oh, look at that. I love that billboard. I think ever since the movie. Make a t-shirt out of it. So let's explain. I love that billboard. Between buildings, there is a billboard for guns and ammo. It's a Desert Eagle mark X1X. Oh, X1X. Those guns are huge, by the way. Desert Eagles are giant. Yeah. You know, we're always talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger.

2:10Arnold Schwarzenegger, he uses a Desert Eagle in the film Last Action Hero. But on him, it looks like normal scale. I just remember Desert Eagles from Tomb Raider 3 because usually you have like, you have magnums or just whatever, Uzis and shoot. You usually carry two guns, but then in Tomb Raider 3, you get a Desert Eagle and she holds it with two hands. Because it's so powerful. It looks humongous in that video game. It looks like a miniature hand shotgun. In this scene, we get more awesome shots. Especially since we're running on the roof. That define the Matrix vibe even more. Oh, yes. So let's talk about some of the shots. Okay. Well, there's that 90 degree shot where Trinity is running from one corner to the other and

2:52then the agent is right next to her. Not right next to her, right behind her. You mean the top down shot? Yeah, that's 90 degree. Yeah, you're right. And then he stops and pulls up his gun. That's pretty cool. I love that. Yeah, he starts shooting with his Desert Eagle. Another great shot is, of course, this is the moment of the minute. The event of the minute. The event of the minute is Trinity doing this amazing jump from one roof to the other roof. And we get this again, 90 degree top down shot. Of her and the music swelling. She jumps across. Again, we're seeing that this is something more here than just...

3:35She's not really just good at Kung Fu. I don't know if anyone can do that. Makes it across the other roof. And then the cops follow... We should have a little dolly zoom on her. Really? There's a lot of dolly zoom in this sequence. By the way, what's a dolly zoom for a layman like me? Dolly. Is that the... Is that the tracks? It's the train track. The dolly llama. The dolly llama. They hire him every time. And then when you zoom with a dolly, it kind of... You can make a Hitchcock zoom. Yep. Okay. It's basically right. Because you pull back and zoom in. Yeah, or vice versa. Yeah. Vice versa. The cops come in. Agent Smith does the same jump. Agent Brown. That's what I meant to say. Agent Brown is what I meant to say. Yeah. And the cops are in disbelief.

4:17Yeah. I'm going to give you some... Oh, man. I wish... I want Tim to read the script section for that part. Okay, give me. Let's give me. I want to hear this. I'm an awesome stuff. Send it to me. Okay, so we return to one of the original drafts of The Matrix to compare what was written. I just wanted to say, first of all, this whole scene is different. Instead of just simply jumping from one roof to the other, Trinity actually races against time to jump right across a train line. So she actually jumps in front of a train before the train hits her, you know? The train's going at full speed and she just jumps over it to evade that.

4:59Oh, okay. And that's the difference between the script and the film. And instead, it was probably too complicated, so they just did the normal jump. Yep. Okay, so you want me to read this little sequence here? How it was in the script? Yeah. Pitch 7. Agent Brown, however, has the same unnatural grace. The metal scream of an eel train. Eel train? Eel train. Eel train. Is heard and Trinity turns to it, racing for the back of the building. The edge. What is this happening here? The edge falls away wide in the alley. The next building is over 50 feet away. But Trinity's face is perfectly calm, staring at some point beyond the other roof. The cops, slow realizing they are about to see something ugly as Trinity drives at the edge, launching herself in the air.

5:46From above, the crowd seems to float beneath her as she hangs in flight. Okay. This is not very descriptive to me. Then hitting, somersaulting, still running hard. Okay, this is like proper enemy. And then the cop says, motherfucker. That's possible. That's like, I'm reading the script and there's so many F words in it. And I have, I'm just wondering, where did they go? I know. You know what happened? Yeah, I think. Did any, did any like a fuck survive at all? No. Seriously? I think they may be just rating, just cut it off. Because he said. But it makes no sense. It's R. It's already R. That's true.

6:26It is R. I don't know. Maybe just I figured like maybe it's too much. Yeah, but that'd be still funny. Like, yeah, I guess like traditional action movies, they are very like, everyone's pretty potty mouth. But maybe they want it to be a little more like, you know, I don't know. Yeah, but I said it wrong. It would be more like, like do like Michael J. Like, motherfucker. That's impossible. Yeah. Yeah. You're making it like, uh, you're in the ghetto here and then. Yeah, that was a bad way to say that. Black cop. Yeah. So that's pretty much it. I mean, I don't know what else to say in this scene. Well, I have something to say. The rooftop set was, um, Trinity's jumping over buildings and then there's a ton of antennas. I don't know.

7:06I just wanted to point that out there. There's just a lot of antennas. I don't know what that's all about. We're establishing a lot of these minutes as to who Trinity is and how different she is from the average cops chasing her, if you notice that. You know, and how Agent Brown is just as agile as she is, you know? I mean, that's, that's something. I mean, the rooftop set is a leftover belt for a similar movie. It's called Dark City. Okay. So I watched Dark City. Oh, really? I did too. Yes. It shares a lot of the similar themes and ideas. And people say that Dark City, didn't people, I think, isn't like the general consensus that Dark City was sort of, they came out before The Matrix, right? Yes, I think so.

7:48Oh no, was it after? No, it was before. Dark City, right? Hey, sure. Let me see. It's after. After. There you go. I told you. No way. At the same time. Well, then why are people always talking about comparing that to The Matrix? No, no, no. Before, 1998 was Dark City. Oh, never mind. I thought Dark City was interesting. No, Equilibrium was after. Equilibrium. That's different. That's different. Yeah, I just was really mad at my friend because he was like, oh, come watch Equilibrium. It's like The Matrix. I'm like, nothing can be like The Matrix. Never. Never. So this was used, oh, the same set, or this piece of set was used in Dark City. It's just a little different. Like, they, it doesn't have the city backdrop or anything, but it's got the same shape. There's a rivalry. They were like, it must be Dark City.

8:29They had the same shot from underneath. You must mock them with their own set and make it better. And also, another thing is that, you know, the shot where the agent gets up and it's a long lens shot of him, you know, from like, as Trinity looks at him. And he, he's like, he does that pose where he's crouched. Yeah. And then he gets up and because it's a zoomed lens, it makes him a little bit more threatening. It's not, it's not close to him like we have, we're close to Trinity. Oh. You don't see the eyes. And it's, it is kind of scary. That's all I have to say about this minute. Me too. I have nothing else. He does the superhero drop. Yes. And there's a little dance move. So what evidence Arnold Schwarzenegger could have been? Could have been all the agents.

9:09As I said, all the agents before. I mean, like, it's not a stretch. The clones. I mean, it's not a stretch. So what are you talking about? It'd be horrible. I mean, like, he played Terminator, so. He would have played perfectly. And on one hand. Your life is lived in computers. Perfect. I don't want to see that. What we're offering is a, is a truth. Put that cookie down. Neo. Mr. Anderson. Neo. What good is a cookie when you can't eat it? We're offering you a clean sweep. Give you a fresh start. Let me see. What are some other good quotes? Like, is there, were you having agents quotes here?

9:51Pretend you met. Oh, the classic. Inevitable. Your foster parents are dead. Could he say that? Oh, yeah. Could Arnold actually say that? How many takes? Did you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That was bad. It's the sound of your death. Goodbye, Mr. Anderson. I think Arnold Schwarzenegger agent is going to be a recurring cast. All right. Well, that's all I have to say with this minute, honestly. Great sound design. I like when she's running up the. I like my favorite shot. I know there's some, there's some, there's some fancy shots. There's some glamour shots. And this one, but the, just the zoom lens on her running up and down the little, you know, the, what are they called? The roof. The roof. The little.

10:31The rough. Schindles. No, the little thing. With the sound. I like that shot. I like that shot. That's good stuff. When people appear. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. From beneath the horizon. Definitely. It's good. What about, like, how did you feel when you saw them jumping around when you first saw the film? I can't remember. I really can't. I know we're trying to. I cried. I cried. She's so sad and beautiful. She is good. She is true heart. Only the pure of heart will jump over such a long distance. See, you get the power of the soul and the heart. She's a heart and soul. I can't. I don't think. I don't remember either. In the terms of the movie plot, I don't think. I just. It was just to me. I just remember, like, wow. You know, like, just how cool that is that that happens.

11:15Yeah. Without thinking of, like, what does that mean? Yeah, definitely. I think it was just cool stuff. I wish I could, like, you know, recall. Totally recall the instance of viewing it for the first time. But since I've used it so many, so many times afterwards, I could not pinpoint what was my initial thoughts of seeing and thinking, what was I thinking? Okay. Well, that about covers minute five. It's already been five minutes. Wow. And it's just been a chase. And Jake now ruined it and I can see the backdrop. I no longer am there. Well, there's more stuff. But everybody loves that sign. I'm a believer. You guys love the gun sign? The puff of smoke coming out of it? That's perfect. I mean, who thought of that? Well, someone on the art department definitely did.

11:56And they're like, can we put a smoke? Can we put a little smoky smoke ring? Also, that shot when she's jumping over the street. I think in every music video since then, there was a shot like that or video tutorial or anything. It's just... Well, we also know that music videos started grading there. Videos green. Yeah. Oh, yes. We were watching music videos through eras and especially... Like right after Matrix, it's just everyone... Everything went... Yeah. Everything went like green or teal. It was a very high contrast, kind of crushed black. Yes. Especially like the... Bring up the greens. Guitar stuff, like the rock stuff. Yeah. New metal. Yeah. That was a perfect new metal.
